We will be heading south for the first time in Dec. Good Sam route planning takes down I95 from Houlton, Me - I495 -I290. I've traveled all of that part several times before and the roads etc were excellent.
Near Worchester, Ma Good Sam switches us onto I395 then back on I95 - I87 -I287-I78-I81-I77-I26 back to I95 in SC. I'm not concerned about the Florida section of the trip but would like to feel reasonably confident that the rest of the route is a good one. I have programed the GS route to avoid major urban areas and major tunnels and to favour interstates. I know my route sounds complicated but I would appreciate any feed back that anyone can give me.
The other aspect of the trip that concerns me is where to stop. How far south do we have to get before we will find CGs that are open in Dec.? Maine, Mass. and NY will not have any I suspect, and we will have to use rest stops or Walmart but I've never driven south of those states so really don't know what to expect. We have lots of time for the trip, in fact 10 days or so. Once we are in more temperate weather we plan to poke around a bit.

Your route is a good one BUT I must warn you that it does go thru the mountains on I-81 and I-77 and will have a greater chance of snow and colder weather. If you stay close to the Atlantic Ocean the trip will be very flat and warmer.
If you stay closer to the coast you will have to deal with some cities and you can get around Baltimore and Washington by taking I-66 to US 17 back to I-95 just south of Washington.
While going thru MA I suggest using I-84 to I-684 and then back to I-87 / I-287

Finding open campgrounds north of North Carolina at that time of year is a challenge, but there are a few which I'll pass along when I have a little more time. One overnighting spot that might be good timing for you on Night One is the liquor store on I-95 in NH. It's ok, I've done it, good security. Your proposed route is OK, but I lean more toward "alfredmay"'s thinking in the winter.

If you decide to go this way the KOA's at Pine Grove Penn and Wytheville VA are open all year. I would watch the weather and make the decision just before splitting off to go to I81.

OK. Here are some year-round campgrounds somewhat along your proposed route of travel:
In north NJ: Mahlon Dickerson
In central NJ: Timberlane Campground
In PA, just off I-81: Lickdale Campground
In West Virgina, just off I-81: Falling Waters Campsite
I can attest to these and hope other folks will add to this list.
There are the usual overnighting places, too, but in the winter it is awfully nice to pull into a campground and plug in.

If you choose to go to Timberlane in NJ; I would suggest continuing on down the coast either along the Delmarva Pennisula to Norfolk, Va or through (I-95)/around Baltimore and DC (US 301). There are campgrounds that are open all year from Norfolk South and from DC South along both routes.
Safe travels!

Thanks everyone. I'll check out the route that avoids the mountains.
