I would like to have some input on how a person pays their bills while away from home. Wife & I don't plan on being gone for more than a month at a time but have bills come in at all times during the month. The fixed payments will not be a problem but its the bills that vary each month. I pay bills using Quicken with a Sprint mobile broadband card on my laptop. Any input will be appreciated.

As much as humanly possible you need to get your accounts online.. no paper. You said you use Quicken online.. I'm not sure how that helps if you (I assume) receive paper bills.

I pay all my bills online thru my bank. For the variable bills, (electricity, water, gas)if they are not available for on line billing, I will pay what I think should cover the billing period, so far, I have not problems with that. For my credit card, I call the customer service number and get the balance. I have been doing this for the last couple years and it has worked well for me.

7 years ago, I put all of our regular bills on Automatic Funds Transfer. The companies send an invoice in advance so I know how much the bill is and then on the proper date, automatically deduct the funds from the checking account. I was a little hesitant about this at first, but have not had a single bad incident. The bills are paid on time and I do not have to do anything or worry about anything. I love it!

We pay all our bills on line most if not all companies will have a web site that will accept payments from gas credit cards to loans. We stay away a month or two at times and all of our bills are paid on line.

Everything is either automatic deduction from checking account or is charged to credit card. I can either phone for the card balances or check my accounts online. For one card I write a check & mail it. The other card is a Walmart Discover which I pay at the handiest store. Have done these things for years with zero problems. Cards ALWAYS paid in full every month. With prices the way they are, I'd have to have an extra trailer just to haul the cash. I don't use debit card except when I need cash. Using it as a credit card opens up too many opportunities for some dishonest person to clean me out and I wouldn't know it until being declined.

Secure wifi can be a problem. For those times I use phone banking for the Mastercard since the bill will be different each month. The land line in the RV park clubhouse accepts any toll free number.
Most utility/taxes/what have-u for the house we have on automatic debit.

We use the same method we use while at home, the Internet. Mostly automatically but we still have a FEW that we pay manually from the creditors web site.

We do ours either by:

1. From the creditors web site...

2. Automatic payment from our checking account...

3. Automatic payment from our credit card... or

4. From our credit unions "bill payer" feature.

Of course, #1 and #4 both require using wifi at the rv park or other places. Typically, if we don't have a secure wifi at the rv park, I will take the laptop to the local library.

FWIW, all but three of our bills are paid automatically and only one doesn't have a web site.

Hope this helps
