We were wondering if we were going to see any other Smart Car enthusiasts with the CDI (diesel) either in tow or trailered. Well we just pulled into the Anaheim RV park and low and behold there are two of them here. One in an enclosed trailer and one in a Renegade Toy hauler. Both CDI's. We'll be trailering ours when we do pull it but we have one more year of pulling the little rig for our central American trip. Sure miss the smart right now though.

Wait till you see the one that is on a lift on the back of the MH painted in the same colour, strips and all as the MH. Looked pretty neat.

I don't think you are allowed to bring a smart car with diesel across your border into America, are you? I've had friends that have tried and got turned around at the border. They said it doesn't meet US EPA requirements. May want to check into that before you make plans

As long as you are not importing it there no restrictions. If there were then there would be a whack of Canadian vehicles unable to cross into the States. Besides it has a smaller carbon foot print than most vehicles out there.,,,that and it gets 72 MPG.

They were told at the border that because so many people were illegally importing them, that they were not even allowed to take it across the border. I don't know this first hand, but I have TWO friends that have run into the same problem. Just something to check before you try it and have to change plans underway.

Thanks for the heads up. I'll ask these folks tomorrow if they had any problem. Admittedly they are the most sought after grey market car in the US as the US version gets a whopping 45 MPG after being weighted up and only available with the gas engine. The next generation diesel available now in Europe but not US or Canada is getting 88 MPG. Sigh.

Seems kinda stupid to ban a vehicle that gets 88 mpg, but that's the US for you. Really makes you wonder what their real motive is

80 mpg in the European version, and already meets all 50 state EPA emission standards, and as a matter of fact is currently the worlds lowest smog emitting HC and CO champion automobile. Beats the Prius and all the other hybrids by a considerable margin! Why it's not available here in the States is a deep mystery for sure!
