I experienced extended cranking (20 seconds or more) while starting my 5.5 gas Onan after not being used for several days or more. Subsequent starts were instantaneous.
I found the rubber fuel line to the tank had many small cracks and was seeping fuel - but never dripping - it just slowly evaporated the line empty.
The line was replaced and it now never cranks longer than 5-10 seconds after sitting for a month.

Thanks for the replies. I just wanted a little confirmation that they all were about the same.

When I got mine used I thought only 27 hours on a five year old unit great. How wrong I was 27 hours is a big minus. It started so hard (diesel) but after using it and ALWAYS putting two hours a month on it under load now it starts like a charm.
They (both gas or diesel) must be run under load at least two hours a month. That what works for me.

I am not sure if this is accurate, but my dealer told me to hold down the off button for about 20-30 seconds to "prime it". When I do that it starts up instantly.
Could be just a coincidence....but it works for me.

Bingo. Take the cover off the gen set and find the start/ stop prime button. There should be a START lable on the top and a STOP/PRIME lable on the bottom of that switch, push the PRIME button down and hold it there while you listen to the electric fuel pump click away, which means it if filling the carb bowl. Usually takes 20 to 30 seconds but maybe a little longer. You can let up on the switch when the clicking stops or slows down quite a bit. Then push and hold the START button, Should start within 10 seconds. 5 seconds is probably not long enough. Works for me every time when I do it faithfully at a minimum every thirty days year round. Try it. Remember PRIME
If you don't prime, the fuel pump is activated when you push the Start button and it still takes 20 to 30 seconds to prime, but you are also working the starter and using the battery all that time when if you PRIME first, you are nor heating up the starter or using much battery. Make sense to you?

I PRIME for 10-15 seconds then try to start 10-15 seconds. Repeat cycle. Usually takes two cycles to start, but the other day after not being ran for a month it took 3 cycles.

Cool...
Mine works from any of the switches by holding the off button. I don't need to pull the cover.
I do hear the slight clicking you describe though.
Works well!
