Recently traveling on a 4 lane highway in western TX and ran over a dead deer in my lane - bad idea. I was traveling 60 mph with most vehicles moveing at +70 mph. I figured my Tow Vehicle and Toy Hauler axles would clear the animal - they did, but forgot about the safety chains. The rather large buck was banged around under the trailer and after I pulled off about 2 miles down the road, found the mess I had - Chains, hitch, trailer frame, stairs, etc were covered with blood and animal meat - enough to make you gag. Thankfull that nothing was ripped off the bottom far as I know - will have to make a complete inspection when I get to my destination. Darn dog likes it, wants to lick the junk off every chance she gets. Anyone else have a similar experience?

I ran over a dead dear a couple of years ago on I-40 in New Mexico traveling 65 mph. I watched the car ahead of me swerve to the left and saw an object lying in the center of the lane. At the same time a 18 wheeler was passing me. The shoulder did not look like a good option so I got on the brakes real hard. I was still going at a good clip when I hit it. A glance back in the right mirror, I saw this object rolling down the shoulder. After coming to a stop, I discovered that I had torn off my $400 Winnebago mud flap and IMO it was not repairable. I left it along side the deer. No other damage. Like you say, just a lot of hair and meat.

You have all given reason and examples for leaving a good distance
between yourself and a vehicle ahead of you. Also for watching 2-4
vehicles ahead of you for sudden lane movements.
I have been fortunate regarding dead animals but have hit boards and
pieces of recaps. When that happens I always pull over for a good vehicle
inspection and a stretch. Better safe than sorry later.

About ten years ago, I was following my mother in my brother's truck on what is now, Interstate 39 in North Central Wisconsin (between Mosinee & Wausau, for those in the area), at about 5:30 in the morning, so it was still dark.

I was a good distance behind mom, but when she suddenly went over a "hump" in the road, I didn't have time to move over into another lane. I remember the feeling when I went over the dead deer in the middle of the road, and felt the "hump". Mom was in a car, so was much lower than the truck I was driving.

We were lucky that neither of us sustained any damage. Mom said that the deer was still "steaming" so it was a recent hit. What got me was as we continued driving along, I could see tufts of hair flying out from under mom's car for the next 15 minutes or so! OMG! At that time, it caused me to giggle,, and to be honest, to this day, it STILL hits my funny bone and causes me to giggle!

At least you were not the guy that a police officer was telling me about. He came up on a call and when he got there there was a guy on a motorcycle that hit a live dear. He split it in half. They thought the driver was hurt because he was covered in blood but it was not from him.

They can cause a lot of problem dead or alive.

Many years ago, I saw a Mercury - somewhere between '49 and '51 models - that had hit a huge hog at highway speed. The entire drive train was ripped out of the car, and the front sheet metal folded back accordion-like.
The whole works was covered with blood.
