Max cat is one of 2 we have . We hve had him since he was a kitten left in a litter on the door of the vet. Took 3 of the 4 and still have 2 10 years later. Max has suffered for many years with what we thought was megacolon and we treated him with various things that seemed to help for long periods. Finally we faced having a surgery for megacolon because he is having more and more problems with getting compacted. A barium xray and exam by the surgeon revealed it was not megacolon, but may be bilateral herniated pouches in his rectum. The fecal matter gets caught and hardens leading to the enemas. The surgeon said the megacolon surgery would not work, so we have continued to treat with medication. Now it appears there is no further help with the medication and we have had to have him cleaned out 2 times and may have to have the cleaning done every 3 days.
Our vet called another surgeon who states he has seen this in dogs. I am taking him in Monday to see if this is the problem and the possibility of a surgical solution. If there is no solution, it may become a quality of life issue as he is no comfortable and will hate Having to be manually cleaned out every 3 days. I have all my hope on this 2nd opinion.

My thoughts and prayers will be with you. Knowing the decision you are faced with is never easy, but we all must keep the pets quality of life as the first reason for reaching our decisions. I know that there are no words that I can say which will help you through this, but remember the wonderful times and relationship you have shared with Max.

Prayers for Max coming your way from Illinois. Is there a veterinary college near you? Maybe they can offer a better solution than the 3 day cleanings. I'll be thinking of you and Max.

Try placing a spoonful of mineral oil in his food. This may act as a natural laxative to help things along. Check with your vet first.
Good luck!

I am sending my prayers and best wishes as well. I know that you will weigh your choices and hopefully the Veterinarians will find a cure or at least some way of making Max have a comfortable life.

Does a plain water enema have any effect? I mean, if you did that once a day at home.... and you know, Mae West gave herself two enemas a day!.. would it keep him from stopping up? I've enem-ized a few cats over the years right at home (and a ferret!) and it was not really that tough to do or even that tough on them.
