I would never let something like this ruin your credit. It is just wrong to charge someone for cancelling a policy. I have cancelled policies before and never been charged.

Don't cancel it, just quit paying it, then let them get their money somewhere else...I have a problem with all insurance companies, can't live with 'em and you can't live without 'em.

Thats what I would do.

If you just don't renew the policy I'm sure there will be no fee. You won't get a refund for the prorated policy, but no fee. It's when you cancel during the MIDDLE of a policy before your "contract" with them is up and expect a refund do they charge you a cancellation fee. This is VERY common practice in ANY business in which you cancel a contract mid term.

Maybe before doing anything you could read your policy… chances are its right there and they are right…

You have a contract for a period of time and a early termination fee is pretty normal…

Na. don’t read the contract it better just to blame them for your actions…

Seems like it would be very difficult for them to collect unless they put the stipulation into the original policy.

That's exactly what they do, Skip.

I once worked part time selling GMAC insurance from a section in a Camping World store next to Lazy Days RV in Seffner, Florida.

I saw this happen many times, and even saw the issuing agent (a fellow fulltime RV'er, no less) routinely charge customers the $50 fee when all they wanted to do was move the GMAC coverage from one RV (their old one) to other RV (the one they had just bought at the adjoining RV dealership).

Instead of just transferring the coverage (which she could easily have done), she would cancel the old policy and write a new one so she would get the full commission (GMAC doesn't pay commissions for moving coverage, just for writing new policies).

I quit soon thereafter (due in part to her ethics)and informed the Camping World regional vice president of her actions, whereupon nothing (of course) happened.

That experience really opened my eyes to GMAC.

Unless your credit score is very high (yes, they do check your credit) and your driving record is spotless, GMAC insurance is almost certainly not going to be the lowest quote you get.

I keep finding reasons to be annoyed with Good Sam, or at the very least why I paid to join.

But, I don't seem to have any difficulty finding reasons to be annoyed. Fortunately, I haven't had the misfortune of buying insurance from them, but I'm sure glad to hear this so I can make sure I don't in goof and make that mistake sometime in the future.

Steve there is a good chance your policy and mine has the same termination fee in it as well... he would of been able to carry the new unit on his currant policy and change companies at the end of the contract… but he’s trying to break the agreement

Glad I read this topic today. I learned a lot about the smiley face company. I try not to do bussiness with any Co that has gone to the troth of govmt bail out money. Just my veiw. That's my money they borrowed, funny when I think about it now, It's my money and then they would turn around and charge me again to cancel a policy? I don't think so. Agree with everyone about stopping the heavy advertisments from them too. Even that is almost deceptive. Sometimes they word things that make it sound like it's something it's not. I will say I have been happy, very happy with their road service. But, for ins.? I'll stick with Citizens. You can't beat the rates and their very good about claims. At least I can bash them on their own forum: Happy Camping

I'd like to point out to JJBIRISH that I don't think anyone said that GS or GMAC is doing anything illegal or that it's not in their fine print ( I don't read it either because it's intended to be read by layers and I'm not) The point is that everyone is making is that, if we took a poll, and this is sort of a poll, you would find that a majority of all of us, think this is a bad practice and most of us have never had it happened to us. So, as long as I still can, I will choose a company that is more ethical to my view, just like you can choose to go with who ever you want to. So far, we still have that right.

Perhaps these very tactics is why I have a great working relationship with a local insurance carrier (agent) who helps me to stay in a commpetitive rate. As I said, never been charged a fee - I'm sure it's not illegal and indeed it's probably right there in the fine print. However, I will not do business with any division of GMAC in the future based on my own experiences with their lease products. Very poor customer service and a "who care's" attitude even when they screw it up.
