Good news and hope the anti-biotic does it’s stuff, so Big Mac can avoid the surgery.

as they are not given the normal immunizations other dogs get when they are young. They have to go through drug tests at the tracks to prevent "doping".

That's interesting, I hadn't heard that before. How sad, from the point of view of the dog, but I guess they are just a commodity to the racing world. My cousin has three retired greyhounds and when she bought a new home, the dogs got their own bedroom. I think my cousin and her DH did it out of self-defense, though, since that is a lot of dog to share a bed with. I hope Mac will be just fine. They are sweet dogs, aren't they?

Greyhounds and other sight hounds have trouble processing some of the drugs used during surgury - possibly due to low body fat. I've never heard that they had weak immune systems from not getting vaccinated when young - I would think that if they didn't get vaccinated but still survived it would be because their immune systems were very good (? does this sound right?).

The vet probably recommended a delay in surgury because of the drugs and the fact that your grey is very old. I hope he does well. We lost our grey 1 1/2 years ago at 12 years old - he wasn't off track but was from coursing lines - he was a special guy and it was heartbreaking to lose him.

Good luck with your pup.

Sarah, our little girl, was set to go on the track when her tests showed she had heartworms. That ended her career before it even got started. Reason was she was not given heartworm shots or meds as a puppy. One of her favorite pasttimes is playing soccer. We will put her muzzle on and give her a soccer ball and she will proceed to bounce the ball around the yard. She'll put her nose under the ball and then throw it into the air and hit it again before it hits the ground. Left alone she would go on indefinitely but we have to watch her real careful and stop her after a short time otherwise she could have a heart attack. We work with rescue groups and have learned a lot about the life these precious dogs have while at the track. It's not a life of luxury. We have adopted 4 so far and each of them have had medical problems stemming from there track life. But they are worth every penny we have to spend on them as they are wonderful loving companions.
