in the woodalls and other cg books, the listings in the niagara area mostly say safe and secure or gated. we have not seen this in other areas. is it not safe in the area of niagara? should we stay outside the area? thanks

The city of Niagra Falls is economically depressed. I've heard that the population has dropped tremendously over the past 20 years. The lack of a tax base shows, as many business areas are run down, streets in need of repair. The tourist areas are fairly well kept. It's when you get a couple of blocks over that you begin to notice.

A couple of CGs on Niagra Falls Blvd, south of the city are in better areas, as is the KOA on Grand Island. Four Mile Creek SP, about 20 mins. east of the falls is the best value in the area. I had no safety concerns while there.

There are a few campground on Lundy's Lane, including a KOA and Campark. We stayed at Campark and althought it wasn't the prettiest campground and has some noise, we found it fine for the location and free shuttle to the falls area. Along Lundy's Lane you will see some "adult" shops, pawn shops and liquor stores and it can seem kind of shady, but we never felt scared. We stayed at campgrounds all over the place that have gates for entrance- I don't think that should make you nervous.

Didn't we just answer this one about Niagara campgrounds? I suggested Niagara Hartland in Gasport, NY.

I have family still in Niagara Falls and surronding area (I was able to escape before they shut off the lights and rolled up the streets)but I still visit there every year. All of the CGs in the area are in safe places. The trouble areas are on the north end of downtown. As a tourist there is no reason to go there, anyway.

The state reservation, the casino, and the Rainbow Bridge (you can walk across to the Canadian side) are on the south end of town.

The pickings are slim for CG's. As mentioned above, there are a couple of small Mom & Pop CG's out on Niagara Falls Blvd. (US 62). Old school, but clean and servicable as a base to use for visiting. There are two KOA's, One on Grand Island and one north of town in Lewiston on Pletcher Road. The one on Grand Island is next to a small amusement park for the kiddes. Nothing fancy, but again you are there to visit the Falls and not to visit the CG.

And finally, there is Four Mile Creek State Park up in Youngstown. It's right on the shore of Lake Ontario. Its clean with big spaces and if you can get a site on the 200 loop (226 thru 236, even numbers) you have a view across the Lake to Toronto. The only drawback is it is 30 amp electric hookup only. If you can get by without full hookups, it's your best bet. I have used them all and I prefer the State Park.

Most of them close for the winter in mid Oct. or there abouts. One of the little Mom and Pop's on 62 are open year around. You can fill your tank at the motel office and use the elctric.

Some of the above responses are talking about Niagara Falls New York and others about Niagara Falls Ontario. There is a big difference in the development and prosperity of the tourist areas in the two cities. You need a passport and at least 4 or 5 days to see the sights if you want to come to the Canadian side.

Stayed at the KOA on Lundy's Lane Canadian side. No issues at all there. Two other campgrounds nearby looked just fine also. Able to catch a bus right outside the campground to the falls. Best way to get around. Stayed in June 09.

I hate to say this, but Niagara Falls,NY, USA does have it problems for a small city. And is affected by some problems on the nearby indian reservations (some like to borrow cars from town and burn them on the reservation after they are done with them). Area is economically depressed and has a serious drug problem. But just make sure, like anywhere else, you don't go into bad neighborhoods and the wrong places and you should be okay. And you also have to be careful which parking lot you park in - watch the rip off artists!! They even look official and have official looking signs. There is info here at RV net, just do a search. And don't ask why the City of Niagara Falls allows this to happen, but it is allowed without question.

There, all that admitted, and I will probably be blasted for saying it. But it really isn't that bad. I certainly would take the same precautions in other parts of our country too!
