We are planning a trip in our class A to Alaska in the Spring. I am told that the chances of a cracked windshield go up dramatically on the AlCan. I currently have a 3 times repaired crack in the passenger windshield that has once again started to crack further. It is down low and does not impact the view. My thought is to live with it until after the Alaska trip. The question is: Does anyone have thoughts/knowledge as to whether or not the Canadians would insist on it being repaired before I could traverse Canada. I know in the States, a cracked windshield is grounds for a 'fix it or ticket' citation.
Thanks for your thoughts.

We're a pretty easy bunch to get along with up here. As long as it doesn't bother you, it won't bother the officials up here. Enjoy your time in Canada, and a big Canadian welcome in advance. We're glad to have you visit.

I've had a cracked windshield on my van for a couple of years now and have crossed the border back and forth many times. It's all the way across the window, low and out of my line of sight. Have never been told a thing going either way and have never been stopped for it.
I believe that, if the crack goes across the driver's line of sight, you might be stopped by police at some point, but wouldn't expect any problems otherwise. I don't think the border guards look for that or are responsible for that.

Those guys & gals have WAY more important things to check than your windshield for cracks--- after all you are entering a foreign country and they have to protect our security!!
They will ask about stuff like --fruit you may have on board, --how much booze,--how much tobacco
Probably a couple other things they may ask about that I am forgetting about but--REALLY, don't worry about your cracked windshield. I can almost fully, about 99%, nearly completely guarantee you it won't even come up..
Rnjoy your trip

I haven't lived in British Columbia for over a decade now. Most of your travel will be through there. When I lived there in the mid 90's there was a law, (which BC has many), that any crack over 11 or 14 cm,(4" to 6"), can't remember exactly, needed the windshield replaced.
After all you will be traveling in the Land of Fruits and Nuts there.

The B.C. law pertains only to vehicles registered in B.C., not to visitors.

The bad part is not going to Canada, but getting back into the US.
The new laws say you must have a Passport or an Enhanced Drivers License to travel by ground into the US.
These laws took affect in July 2009.
You will not have any issue if you have either one of these. Double check the US customs web site for any other surprises.
We travel between Michigan and Ontario all the time without any issues.

IMHO I would leave the windshield alone until after the Alaska trip. Purchase a windsheild repair kit to take along with you. Your gunna need it. I live in Northern Alberta and have traveled the Alaska Highway. Buying a new window now would be a waste of money. There are police cars here in my town with cracked windows.
Hope your trip goes well.

We made the trip in 2008. Cracked both windshields leaving a friends driveway in Minnesota. Then got a big bullseye on a nice highway 100+ miles south of the Alcan. No problems on the Alcan itself or in Alaska. Go figure!!!
No problems at any border.
