GFI not tripping

I replaced the GFI thinking it went bad and replaced it with new one. The new one also does not trip. The outlets all work and the light connected to the circuit work??????????? When I trip the breaker then the GFI will trip.
Hope to hear what you think the cause and remedy is.

thanks

What is the problem that are you trying to solve? Most people have problem why is the GFI tripping. You really do not have a problem until you can not find the GFI when half the power is off in the RV. And how you trying to trip the GFI?

I might have not made it too clear. When you push the test button it will not trip. It should trip and cut power to the outlets, I cannot cut the power through the GFI only the breaker.

Make sure that you do not have the LINE and LOAD wires reversed. Make sure the black and white are on the correct pins. Make sure the ground is connected. TEST without the load wire connected, before you connect the load wire. Doug

You may have it hooked up backwards. There are usually two sets of connections on a GFCI outlet. 1 set is the input and the other set is the output. If you hook the incoming power to the output connections the GFCI won't work properly. They should be marked on the outlet.

You have hooked the wires to the GFI outlet incorrectly. I suspect the one you replaced was OK and also hooked up wrong & you did what anyone would & attached the wires as they were to the original. There should be a wiring diagram on the outlet packaging. You will not have GFI protection if you don't correct it.

I believe you guys have hit it on the head!
It might have always been hooked up wrong, load to line and line to load. I did just that, wired it back the way it was. So tomorrow I will test and see if the load and line are reversed. And the first GFI probably is good.
I will post the results tomorrow.
again thanks

Are you missing a ground? The test button connects a high resistance (very low current flow) from the hot to ground. AFTER you check for correct in/out wiring as mentioned above, then make sure you have a real ground to the GFI outlet.

I have understood that a GFI works differently. It measures current flow in the black wire and also in the white wire. If they are not identical, it is assumed that somewhere along the line there's a 'leak' and something (like a person) is conducting current to ground. It then shuts the power off. You do not need a ground connection at the GFI. (unless it and the following outlets have a ground pin) In fact, you can buy a GFI outlet without a connection for ground. Some older homes with no ground pin at the outlets are thusly GFI protected.
