A couple of years ago we drove 17 south from M/Beach to 95 on our way to Hilton Head. I don't recall any problems with our 34 1/2 foot and toad. Maybe someone with a better memory than mine who has driven it recently can be more specific.

Can't answer your specific question but a month ago it was a great route for a truck and a 40' 5ver - always has been too. What problem are you anticipating? You give your length but there aren't really any hairpin turns. The lanes on 17 are standard width and there are no low bridges.

There was a project going on last year about 30 miles south of Charleston to widen U.S. 17 to 4 lanes. I don't know if it's still going on, but our son, a Charleston PD Sergeant, told us that the Highway Patrol and local small town police were STRICTLY enforcing the construction speed limits.

When you get to Mount Pleasant, about 10 miles north of the new Charleston suspension bridge, you might want to consider taking I-526 west, bypassing a lot of congestion on the Charleston peninsula. I-526 dead-ends at U.S. 17 on the south side of Charleston, avoiding a lot of traffic and narrow streets.

Overall, though, you should experience no problems along the way. We've done it several times, and it's a pretty pleasant drive.

Can't answer your question, but we plan to take 17 south from Opal, Va. all the way to 95 just south of Yemassee, S.C. next month on our way to Fl. just to not take I-95 as we have in years past and for a change of scenery.

As the others have said, you won't have any problems. I would recommend the I526 to avoid Charleston. However, if you want to get a glimpse of the city and see our the longest cable stay bridge in North America stay on 17 to I26 West and then catch I526 towards Savanah. Will add a few couple of miles and about 8 trafic lights, but may be worth it. Regardless, going south, traffic will be worst from 4pm - 6:30pm.

They are getting close to finishing the widening project, but probably still a couple months away. The few times I've been through there, the construction was only a minor inconvenience.

As mentioned, they strictly enforce the speed limit from Edisto River southward. Don't even count on 5 over being acceptable.

It is coastal plain, no hills, no constrictions. The roads were built to handle full-size trucks. I drove it regularly before I-95 was built, when I was stationed in MB. The only thing to really slow you down will be Charleston.

Last time I went through on 17, Virginia to I-95, I used the I-526 loop around Charleston. But if you haven't been there yet, Charleston is a neat place to visit.
