I have a Duo-Therm 13000btu roof mt. ac that won't shut off with the thermostat. My trailer has been setting up, covered, for the past three months. I was getting it ready for a trip and found that the AC will run, but won't cut off with the thermostat. I have to trip the breaker to turn it off. The thermostat works the furnace as well and it works ok. The thermostat is DC and I can hear a click in the AC when I run the temp. up and down with the breaker off. Sounds like something is stuck, but I'm not sure what it might be. I appreciate any help I can get.

Thanks

Are you sure it is the AC running and not just the fan? Is fan in "ON" or "AUTO" and are you giving it time to figure out what you want it to do?

Hi,

THey put in a TINY little relay to control the compressor motor. The compressor is rated to use about 10 - 13 amps, but start-up is more like 40 - 50 amps for 1/2 second.

For one RV, where the compressor would not come on, I installed a 24 VAC relay rated at 15 amps, and he reported that it was still working several years later. The only dis-advantage is the time delay relay is no longer going to work, but the compressor will start and stop with the new relay.

Yes the 24 VAC relay did work with 12 VDC. I use one with my water pump to switch on my 10 amp variable speed water pump, it has been working for the past several years, and gets turned on and off several times a day, has never let me down, and yes it is a 24 volt switching relay working on 12 VDC.

You can find the circuit breaker in the air conditioner by removing the inside panel, and look for a sheet metal cover to remove, and it should be inside there.

For now, leaving the circuit breaker off except when you want cooling will work. Just make sure the fan is on when you turn on the circuit breaker. (Never let the compressor run without the fan running to get rid of the heat!!)

The circuit breaker will not have any effect on the furnace. Yes you can leave it this way if you don't want to buy the $120 circuit board. Or you can call the manufacture and ask them if that circuit board is under any type of recall. My circuit board was under recall, and they sent me a free one several years ago.

Have fun on your vacation, especially if you will not need the air conditioner, you can fix this problem later.

Good Luck,

Fred.
