When/if you replace the batteries, be sure and put some die-electric grease on the terminals to ensure a good connection and it helps with corrosion prevention also. JMHO

Once you check out the batteries, you might want to consider adding the "battery fill system". I forget the actual name of the product. My Newmar has 4 6 v, and there is no way w/out being a contoursionist (sp) to get to all 4 of them. The fill system, I got from CW is not cheap, but it makes the chore of checking/filling the battery water level easy. I check the batteries once a month, on the 1st. Easy to remember.

Considering that the lights are flickering, I would check the fluorescent light ballasts. They will give off a bad smell when they start going bad.

Anti-corrosion compound made for batteries on the terminals is a good thing, but dielectric grease is not. Dielectric means will not conduct.

Did you run the genset when you were looking at the coach with the vendor? Perhaps you could call him and ask the age of the batteries. He may be willing to help you out with this problem. Welcome to our world!

My 1995 Newmar (just got it Thursday and learning like crazy) smelled so bad tonight after I turned on the generator. It smelled like bad breath. I don't think we can even stay in it and here we were planning our first trip this weekend.

I don't know a thing about generators but wish I did. Can anyone shed any light on this? Oh! Also, earlier tonight certain overhead lights starting flashing, then I could smell this odor...kind of like overheating but not a burning smell.

Any clues?
Lacy

I agree with the others, check the batteries. A dry battery gives off a bad smell when off gassing. Smells like a bad sewer.

The name of the battery filler from CW is ProFill. It's great-so simple to use. My 4 batteries only have about 3-4" above them-not enough space to fill or see into them (even with a mirror!).

I could also be the smell of hot wires from them being loose at the transfer switch, check all the connections for the transfer switch.

Have you checked the battery water. If the batterys are dry they will give off a real fowl oder when they are charging. If they are dry I would suggest you replace them.

Hmmmm.. if the batteries where dry, how did they start the genny? Before you replace them add Distilled water. Dryed out mine so bad once It took nearly a gallon each (6v T105) to fill them. Water is $1 a gallon, batteries are a bit more.

Lacy, if you are going to replace the batteries, it is a good idea to take a good clear picture of the compartment and how everything is connected prior to disconnecting everything. Always good to have that picture to verify your re-install.
