Can anyone tell me how to add a post from someone else to my post? I see others have a dotted line box around someone else's post, and then they reply to that.

Hit the "Quote" link at the top of the other person's post. Then start typing....

Thanks, sch911. If this worked, then I understood.

What if you don't want to quote their entire comment?

[quote=Klueck]What if you don't want to quote their entire comment?[/quote]
When you click on the Quote link for a post, a New Message window is opened with the quoted material and the quote tags displayed, as above.
Like any other text in your post, you may edit the text between the the quote tags. When doing this, the most commone error is deleting a bracket. You should make sure the quote tags are intact.
When deleting part of a post, I insert ... to show that something has been removed. Some members insert
snip
You should be careful not to change the meaning of the quoted material. For example, suppose I deleted this part of your post.

Then the quote would come out as
Klueck wrote: What if you do want to quote their entire comment?
which is the exact opposite of what you intended.
There are other ways, to quote part of a post, but this is how to do it, if you start by clicking on the Quote link.
Do not quote or copy this post. I used a "trick" to display the brackets and "fool" the display engine into not recognizing the quote tags. Copying or quoting this post will break the trick.

Once the post appears in your reply box you can delete the content you don't want and leave that you do.

I always quote as is, even grammar/spelling/etc mistakes.
I do note removal of superfluous text by putting 'snip...' in where
that text used to be, or just at the end or begining to indicate
removal.
I DO NOT change the text of the topic I'm quoting them on.
I do highlight (bold/color/etc) portions of their text to emphasize
