We go every few years the week after schools Easter vacation. The weather has varied from perfect, to cold to too hot. We take clothes for each possibility.

I'll have to start a "must stop" restaurant list. These deep fried burgers are of course lo-cal?

Padlin, when you come this way, let us know and we will meet you at Scotts. BTW, the RV campground at Natchez Trace is down by the lodge on hte south side of the park. So, if you come in from the interstate, pass up the old tent campgrounds.

Sounds good, now if I can just remember to drop you a note before you head out.

Need to schedule next springs vacation shortly at work. I have 2 possible 2 week time frames which may or may not be so close together as to make a choice a moot point. Last week of Apr/1st week of May, or last week of May/1st week of Jun. Don't have a specific destination in mind, just touring the state eating BBQ. If you're from Tn, which weeks would you pick and why? Our biggest issue is we like uncrowded state parks and such.

Tennessee has BBQ? Well that is news to us here in the Carolina's where BBQ was invented. You want some real BBQ come on down Ya'All to the Carolina's.

Can't dispute Buck62 about South Carolina, but for us it is a pretty log drive, so we just have to put us with what we have. Anyway, lets start a Best BBQ thread, or even better, a book!! What about ground rules, no major chain places. Each place should be run by owner, and BBQ should be cooked fresh at the resturant. Just suggestions, someone else comment, please

I'd recommend Roan Mountain State Park for either of those time periods. We have camping, cabins, pool, tennis courts, basketball court, MILES of hiking on and off the Appalachian Trail, and the prettiest campsites anywhere.

As for BBQ, I'd suggest JJ's Pulled Pork BBQ from Bob's Dairyland in Roan Mountain. Everything there is homemade, including the awesome hushpuppies and handbreaded fish.

We try and find local foods that we don't get at home, or at least when what we do get at home is not very good. TN bbq has to be better then MA bbq. I was just in NC, and yes we had BBQ, a couple times out in the western part of the state. One was pulled pork the other was chunks, both excellent, as was the seafood on the OBX. Trying different foods is one of the things I really like about traveling.

Padin, we live in Crossville, TN which for the sake of arguement is half way between Nashville to the West and Knoxville to the East. The Cumberland Mountain State Park as well as some of tyhe other TN state parks has a great restaurant and they serve buffet style lunch and dinner 7 days a week. We only go for Friday lunch as that is all you can eat Catfish day, for less than $20 a couple (seniors) including tax, tip and beverage. There is also camping with hook-ups in the park. If you are a duffer, Crossville is the golf capitol of TN with 11 courses in a town of only 20,000. Adjacent to the Cumberland Mtn. State park is a championship Jack Nickalaus course called Bear Trace.

We have eaten BBQ all over the state and will drive the 70 odd miles to Calhouns in Knoxville. They have 3 or 4 places and our favorite is Calhouns by the River-ask for a waterfront table.

One thing you need to recognize is east and west TN are as different as day and night, i.e. eest is flat as a board and east and central are mountainous. They are also different culturally, politically, etc; but, that will have zip affect on you as a 2 week vacationer.

Y'all come on down and enjoy, Ken Roberts....
