I was walking one of my Papillons and a 60-70 lb. Mastiff/hound cross charged us from a distance of about 35 yards away. I managed to take out my collaspible baton and extend it and hit the dog once on the back. It didn't hurt it but it sure backed it off fast. The dog actually had to cross a street to get to me. I wasn't close to it's house. I went directly home and went back in my car to the dog's house and called the animal control officers. They arrived at the same time as the dog owner arrived and we had a chat about his loose dog. I left at that point becuse the officers requested I leave. Said they would handle it from there. I'm not sure what I would do different except hollar "NO!" to the dog as he approached. I've done that before and stopped them in their tracks. This time I was so surprised how fast the dog was coming at me, I was speechless. BTW, in my state it's legal to carry a baton.

See that is where I am different when I was a child I had a neighbors dog kill my dog and since then I have a standard policy if any dog attacks me or my pets I will kill it on the spot learned a long time ago that owners always have an excuse about their dog getting loose. Just glad you and your pets came out of the mess ok.

Always good to announce that you're going to kill someone or something before you do it, that lets you out of trying to claim self defense when it happens. Of course, probably none of us will be around, but I s'pose you've told everyone you know the same?
For the OP, sorry you had such an upset on your walk, but glad to hear that the whack-on-the-back produced the desired results. I often do find that a loud bellow will send a dog running, but when that doesn't work or there isn't time before contact is made, you have to do what you have to do.

Yep, I posted this as a cautionary tale. Keep your head up and be aware when walking a small dog. Take some time to rehearse in your mind what you might have do if you are confronted with a similar scenerio. I've also just scooped up my dog in my arms and bluffed away big dogs.
I've thought about buying an alligator, cutting off his tail, painting him yellow and trolling the neighborhood for loose dogs. Just kiddin'.

I glad you ended the problem with the baton, we cant have them here in my state so I carry a childs aluminum base ball bat instead.
I like the clubbing method best, If a person dont care about there dog and others getting hurt they dont need a agressive dog. A police officer told me one time that if you fear for your life from another animal it's death is justafiable. to bad that dont go for some of the owners of these pet.

also there is some form of dog-mace, is different than for humans...
a CO2 extingisher fired close to the snouth....
besides, carring a small extinguisher in hand is less fearfull to others than to carry a spray-baton-or handgun!

I (my dog) have been attacked too many times by big 60-90 lb cowards running loose ! I now carry a chunk of 3/4" sch 40 steel pipe. Shortly after I started carry'in, we were attacked by 2 of them. I would have killed both, but killing even one is near impossible unless it was a lucky shot to the head. But thank god I was able to hurt one of them, (broken leg) and the other coward had sense enough to back off !
Sorry folks, I am a dog (pet) lover too, but when a much larger animal turns coward, its open season IMO. And I found out at times like that, "adrenaline"
takes priority over any laws.

Way ahead of you on this one. I already tried that and was almost charged with animal cruelty...
So I got "Jake" the snake, but he could walk (OK, crawl) that fast....

...Doc wouldn't check his teeth (OK, fangs)...in addition to having to put my life on the line every time I put his collar on...
So I got "Baby", who worked out perfectly....

Seriously, I glad the baton worked well for you and all ended up without any injuries...
End of posting for the day...

Glad all turned out well.
I have a question that doesn't involve the incident. Where in the name of all that's good and Holy does one live in Four Corners???? Unless you live in an Indian vendor's tent, there is nothing there. Or is this someplace different entirely? Just curious.
