I've been looking at diesel pushers and a buddy of mine has a 330HP 8.3L Cummins and he really likes it. He pulls a monster trailer with it with no problems. I don't have real deep pockets and a lot of the ones I'm looking at have the 5.9. I thought you guys might be able to help me. Is a 36 - 40 ft dp with a 5.9 maxed out with just the coach? Or how much do you think it could pull - without having to hold it to the rug the whole time. Right now I only pull 5-6,000 lbs.
Thanks
D

A lot of 5.9s pull toads. I doubt that a trailer would be any more difficult as long as it was not much heavier.

The answer is in what kind of car you drive.

If it's a subcompact you are ok. If it's a Vette hold out for more.

We have an 8.3~ 300 HP , We Tow a Tracker no problem anything heavier, I would start to worry about Steep Grades . So In My Humble Opinion if You plan to Tow You should get the Biggest Motor that You can afford and Tow only what You are Comfortable Towing!

The 5.9's can also be leaned on pretty hard. A good tuner, some plumbing work, increase the boost, methanol injection, maybe a hit of hydrogen, you can get 350 hp pretty easy. (watch for flames, the anti-hot rodders will be here shortly!)

I don't have experience with a 5.9 in a MoHo, but my 5.9 in my truck will pull the house off it's foundation if I could figure out the traction thingy. Very strong puller.

I used to pull about 5500 lbs behind my 275 5.9 and it did the job, you might get passed on the hills sometimes but so what. A stock diesel with everything in shape can have the snot worked out of it all day and it shouldn't hurt it.

The reason manufacturers offer the 8.3 ISC and now the 8.9 ISL engines is that that those that buy the ISB 5.9 might be disatisfied. The ISB will get you there, just perhaps a litte slower. So, as others have suggested, it depends on how heavy a trailer you want to pull and what your expectations are.

Before you buy, check the chassis weight limitiations to see if they meet your requirements.

The key is the trans... if it were me and I was adding this and that for engine performance and I was planning to pull a good load I would add a trans cooler cooled by the coolant. Most 5.9s have a piece of junk air cooler for the trans.

I have the 6.7 at 325 HP.. yes once in a while i will drop a few mph on a hill .
On level ground or rolling hills it's easy to exceed the speed limit by a bunch.
