Does anyone have one of these soda makers?

soda maker

I have noticed it on RV-Dreams blog for quite a while and just recently saw something on TV about it.

When we go camping I hate having to bring along a case or 2 of pop (and beer) because I never have anywhere to put it. Also since pop has gotten so expensive lately, I was wondering if this might be a good idea...cheaper..takes less room. I would still have to bring the beer for DH but maybe this would save some space??

Anyone have this? Thoughts?

they used to be commonly sold at bestbuy type of stores, etc. My folks had a small unit that took the CO2 IIRC cartridges and aerated water cheaply. don't think they are worth $100 however.
and how are you going to flavor the water?

did a google and found a similar unit for $80.00

I've tried the "end product" at a friends house and found it to be unsatisfactory to my taste buds. If you just want generic "pop" it'll give it to you but if you like a particular taste in pop, good luck.

We're interested in the soda maker, too, but it does seem pricey and we wanted to try out the 'finished product' before we bought one. So I bought bottled soda water and several flavors of Torani syrup (we use the sugar-free, zero-calorie flavors available at W-M and World Market). We experimented and found the right ratio of syrup to soda water to please our taste buds - about an ounce of syrup in a 16 ounce glass, ice, and soda water. My favorite flavor is Torani chocolate (yum!) and my DH's favorite is Torani black cherry. You can use more or less syrup to suit yourself so there's really no reason to drink weak pop. And there are so many flavors to choose from, both with sugar and without. The soda maker company sells flavored syrup also, but I haven't tried those.

Also, I love Italian sodas and now I make them at home by adding about a quarter cup of heavy cream to the soda water and flavored syrup in my 16 oz. glass. I've served many guests over the summer, too, and received rave reviews for the 'pop' and, especially, for the Italian sodas. (The heavy cream, of course, negates the zero-calorie benefit of the soda water/sugar-free syrup 'pop', but it's soooo good!) The soda maker is on our wish list for the motorhome we hope to acquire in 2010.

I don't have one of their soda makers, but I use the Soda Club's mixes and like them. I homebrew and use my CO2 tank along with a Carbonator cap and 2L bottles. You just add the mix to cold water, screw on the Cap and shake until the bottle is carbonated. The mixes are very inexpensive. A $5 bottle makes 12 2L bottles of soda. You can put a regular cap on the bottle once it's carbonated. And if the soda goes flat, just re-carbonate.

Some people connect a paint ball CO2 tank to a regulator and use that.

I own something similiar to the one you are looking at. I do not use it because I did not like the taste of the soda syrup. The soda syrup have expiration dates. Also some of the syrup containers burst and made a big mess.

We used to have a soda maker when I was a child. Got it from the Schwans delivery truck. Complete kits with the bottles and syrup. The co2 tanks were the expensive part and eventually Schwans dropped them. They just gave us an address of the company but we just stopped using it. Was great though for making new "unheard of" flavors. Kids will have a good time with it.
