We've just put the downpayment down on a new 5er with two slides, and sort of in passing the salesman suggested that we smear Vaseline on the slide seals to keep out any wind-driven rain. Has anyone done this? Wouldn't the slide get gunky and pick up all sorts of dirt and grit where you really don't want it? And, depending on the slide seal material, isn't a petroleum product perhaps a bad idea, anyway (could cause deterioration)? Is water being blown through the slide a big problem for anyone?
Thanks,
-- Nicole (counting down the days now!)

There is a slide seal spray for the metal parts that I use and for the rubberish parts I use ammoral (sp) and do them when I treat the rubber around the windows, at least 3 times a year. Most of our travels are in south and west. At same time I treat the tires with the tire product. This has served us well for 3 motor homes. I haven't heard of anyone using vaseline. Happy travels with your new 5ver.

You have answered your own question. There are products made specifically for the seals, but really you do not need to stock up now. Wait until you have your new toy and read the manual.

I would not do it! If you do it you will have dust that will build up and make it look like hell. I have an 04 and never had any rain get in and we have been in some rain that the wind was gusting up to 50Mpr That is with 4 slides. If you get rain in take it back to the dealer.

Nicole. You are right. Don't use it for all the reasons you mentioned. We use a product called 303, but as others have said, there are good products for that particular purpose. Good luck with your new baby

Maybe the obvious, but petroleum breaks down rubber.

I use rubber lube on my seals and I do it once every two or three years. I'd recommend you not make an issue where there is none.
