The wife and I bought a new Shamrock HTT earlier this year. We upgraded from a Colman popup. We would have purchased a bigger HTT but were limited by our tow vehicle. We now have a new tow vehicle so I can tow more, a lot more. We are very happy with the HTT but would not mind something with a slide and a bit bigger. With a growing family, the bunkhouse models are also appealing to us. All of that said, I'm a little apprehensive about going from a 21' trailer to something in the 30' or so range. Will I be able to get a 30'+ beast into forest service and national park CG's? That is were we do most of our camping. For our style of camping is there a max trailer size that fits into most CG's? How much difference is there when towing a 30'+ vs a 21' trailer? I wold assume the additional weight wold hurt my MPG and ability to get up the hills a little, but I would not think much else?
Thanks

From experience....my mileage did not driop much when I went from HTT to a 30 foot TT. It seems the front mass of the trailer (wind resistance) was the big issue. I noticed a huge drop from pop up to HTT. When switching from a 19 footer to a 30 to a 35 footer, the big difference was in turning corners and acceleration ( or should I say lack thereof). Just take it easy, give yourself a little more space between you and the guy ahead of you and you will see that towing a big trailer is not THAT much different--just a little bit.

As long as your TV is adequate for the TT, doubt you'll notice much difference in towing. We had one of the earlier HTTs (a 2001 21' Kiwi, 18' box, 21' w/tongue) and thought we might do a lot of camping, as we were graduating from tents. As it turns out, we have gradually gone to RV parks more and more (we're getting older, and the amenities become more appealing with age).
We had the HTT for four years and putting the beds together everytime we stopped finally got to us. Our current TT (26' box, 29' w/tongue....still not sure how TTs are measured) is definitely not as easy to maneuver in some campgrounds, but there are all kinds of campgrounds and many can accommodate our current TT without problems.
Most important aspect of such an upgrade (if that's what you want to call it) is to have a proper hitch so as to minimize any potential towing problems. Our current TT serves us well, though I might have chosen a different unit. The DW prevailed with her selection of a floor plan, as usual. She could care less about any other aspect of the unit. Last year I went from a 7.4 GM gasser to our present 7.3 PSD, so can tow just about anything.....towing ability not much of a factor.
