a 2nd post
when going through canada, make it a point to overnight at Muckluck annies
Buy their Salmon dinner and get a free boat ride on the lake. I think the camping was free too.. but also 10 yrs ago. I belive it is in the Yukon--look it up.
Laird hot springs was super, although a week after our stay a Grizzly killed someone.

We made a wonderful trip across the Alaska Highway this summer. For the most part the highways were about as good as some of the "secondary" roads in the "lower 48". The worse part was in Yukon where they were doing a lot of repair work and the gravel they used caused large columns of dust. We drove about 45 MPH across the highway for 2 reasons, 1 because of frost heaves and construction and 2 so that we could enjoy the scenery and the animals. I am planning another trip in 2011 and I would recommend that you take your own swet time, enjoy the scenery and the animals, don't be in a big hurry to get anywhere. Also don't pay a lot of attention to the "horrible" stories of bad roads. Happy Trails Bob W

Jerry, Smokey and I have traveled all over these United States since 2000. We recently completed a trip over the SW and into Canada and Alasks. Here is our blog: www.thisisatripofalifetime.blogspot.com

Mukluck Annie's is closed!!!!!!!!!! Big bummer. But go to Alaska anyway Take your time, get your coach serviced prior to leaving, and give yourself as much time as you can- 2 to 3 months. Some of the frost heaves are tough, but usually marked with cones or small flags. Slow down for those, especially if towing, less stress on the tow bar. It's a great trip, I can't wait to go back. You will not regret including Banff and Jasper!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh, forgot to mention that when my brother and I came back down from Fairbanks to Walla Walla, Washington this last September, he has a phone with Verizon and I have one with T-Mobile. I would guess that 90% of the time we needed a phone Verizon worked, but T-Mobile only worked 10% of the time.

I'm looking to change soon.

We drove the Alaska Highway for the first time this summer. MUCKLUCK ANNIES is closed, along with about every third business up the highway. Very, very sad. Hard-hit by the economy no doubt.

That was about the same ratio as in June of 2008 before the worst of the economy hit. I think it's typical of the businesses along the Alaska Highway. They start on a hope and a prayer and like most small businesses don't make it more than a year or two.

To the OP,

It's a great trip and don't sweat the road. It's all paved except for where they're working to re-pave sections. The worst part are the frost-heaves northwest of Whitehorse. Just slow down and enjoy the scenery.

We took the trip this year. Did TOW from Dawson City to Chicken on the trip North. We were there for 2-1/2 months. 6000 miles on the motor home and an additional 3,000 on the towed. We used our Verizon cell phones on the trip and found them to have service a majority of the time (signed up for Verizon's Canadian plan for the time we were gone). We acquired a couple of windshield chips on the trip North and had them repaired in Whitehorse before we continued (mobile repair comes right to the campground). Also had the same fellow repair the chips we acquired before returning home. We came home the Cassiar and that was well worth the drive. Our next excursion might be by water. Are contemplating taking our boat up the Inside Passage to Juneau in a year or so.

Don't shed too many tears for those businesses. Many of them have such low taxes, and paid off or are paying such low mortgage rates since they are way out in the boonies, that they can often take a year or even two off.

Especially those that either built or bought before or way before the huge spike in Alaska travel a few years ago. Newer businesses or those that just bought a business in the industry up there and paid for allot of goodwill are the ones that are hurting.

Or so I've heard from a couple RV park owners I've talked to.
