I took my grandkids to the park today and evidently lost my cell phone. I had it in my pocket, but it fell out without me realizing it.
My sil met me at my granddaughter's karate class and he told me that somebody had my cell phone. He tried to call me and got some lady (?). He told her that she had his mil's cell. She told him that she found it, took it home and was keeping it. I tried calling several times when I got home, but she wouldn't answer.
My daughter called Verizon, who called my number, and the lady answered the phone. When the Verizon employee identified himself, she hung up on him. He tried calling back, but she turned the phone off. He immediately shut the phone off.
I don't understand why she wouldn't return it. The phone has been reported stolen. There is no way that she can have it turned back on, so what good is the phone to her? Did she really think that I would leave the service on so that she could use it?

THis happened to my daughter while she was walking with GD at the park, but she was lucky..the lady that found it found "mom" in her address book & called me. I told her where she lived about 2 blocks away & she was going to take it to her house, but they found each other before she had to do that.
I had never thought about having the service turned off if a phone was stolen...thanks for mentioning that. I'll certainly do that if that happens to me.

Your phone wasn't "found," it was stolen. Happened to me on Tuesday, so welcome to the club. If it has a sim card that can just be switched, or it can be activated on another number and used, so it can probably be sold for a few dollars to get the person who stole it some dope or alcohol.

My phone didn't have a sim card. I'm sure that's what the person who has it thought.
Verizon won't activate it once it has been reported lost/stolen.

Eric, too bad I didn't think of that earlier.
When she hung up on Verizon, they immediately turned off the service.

A buddy of mine has a funny story about calling "Mom."
He found a phone sitting on a bench, so he picked it up and called "Mom" on the list. He told her "Hi, I have found your son's cell phone. Get in contact with him and then tell him to call his own cell phone. I'll keep the phone on and then when he calls I'll make arrangements to meet him and give him his phone."
As soon as he hung up, the phone rang. Mom was there and told him "Hey Allen, some guy has your cell phone, give him a call and he'll give it back."

When I loose my phone I borrow my wife's and hit 6-1-1.. T-mobile will immed disable my cell till I get a replacement or call 'em back and go through a verification process to confirm I found it.
