We have decided to add another working dog; actually another type of working dog. He will be unlike all other dogs we've owned; never in the house and will not travel with us. He is 7 months old now and we'll get him as soon as we can work out transportation.

Maremma livestock guardian dog

So you might say our flock is expanding, since he will live with the sheep.

I've heard of the breed but have never known anyone who owns one! I'm very excited for you.

I am sure he will make an excellent addition to your flock & his new pack of dogs. He will have plenty to keep him busy standing watch over and protecting the sheep. I hope all the dogs get along well with him.

Please post more pictures once you get him home.

They sure protect the flock from cayoty attacks. And are a beautiful large dog.

Good move!! I have seen these dogs here in TN with sheep. Apparently they work out great.

Cool, Mark!! I saw a program on them years ago (don't remember where) and it was fascinating!

So if one of your BC's goes out to the pasture - does the Guardian stop him, too?? Or do they learn who has access to the sheep and who doesn't??

Deb,

This was one of our questions. The breeder, a good friend of ours, said that the pup will learn us and our dogs and eventually not pay any attention to our dogs. She says the LGD will just come in with the sheep when we send one of our dogs out to gather the flock.

Other breeds of LGDs are more aggressive with their protection; some are even protective against humans (Maremmas are supposed to be friendly to people).

The breeder told me about something that happened last night on the farm where one of the other pups now lives. The farmer also has an adult female Maremma and she is in heat. So the farmer decided to lock up the female to prevent her from getting bred. The 7 month old pup decided to hang out with the adult female instead of with the flock. The farm lost 2 ewes to coyotes last night because neither LGD was with the flock.
