Update on Isabel. The vet just called and now they no for sure she has cushings disease and they think she has a liver shunt. They want another 800 to do more tests that will bring up the bill to $1400. And a week ago we spent $400 So we are thinking that even if they can get her back it may happen again shortly. She would have to be on a special diet and I am not sure we could get her to eat it because she is such a picky eater. She also has bad knees and needs an operation for them. I really beleive it may be time to make the decision to put her down. One thing for sure we have loved her for about three yers and did everything to make her happy. She was a lover and the wife loved her.
We have to let them know by 6pm as to what we decide.

I am so sorry you are faced with this terrible decision. My vet once told me that if the animal is not enjoying life, it's time to let go. Praying that you made the right decision for Isabel, and you.

This is the toughest of decisions that only you can make.

When my “Baby” (Pit Bull) got a heart attack a few years ago. It just happened that Ma was visiting and rushed her to the Emergency Clinic.

I received a call from the Doctor, giving me the 411 on “Baby’s” critical condition. During our short conversation, “Baby’s” heart stopped.

After asking a quick question, I decided (although I didn’t want to. It was my opinion if I didn‘t let "Baby" go, it would have been selfish of me) to let her sleep.

This Pit-Bill and I went through the toughest of times together.

My prayers are out to you’all,

Pops

My question to the Doctor was of “Baby’s” quality of life if he was able to revive her….

I would certainly not do the tests. I'd ask them if they'll assist you in treating her "as if" she has the shunt as well as cushings (ie diet and any meds she should have) and see how she responds. If that seems to help then fine, if not, then I think it is time to look at her quality of life.

It isn't just a question of money, though at some point for most of us that is going to become a complicating factor. But if life is nothing but a struggle from appointment to appointment and from medication to medication, and not feeling well in between... it really gets to be a question of "why?"

They didn't call her "Plain Gravy" for nothing.

I have a two yr old Aussie with a liver shunt and we are able to manage her health but I don't let them do any of the expensive testing because she would only suffer at this point. She is happy and plays but it's not the life we would like for her to have. She can't ever have surgery or be around other animals because of her delicate, weak body. I'm glad we didn't put her down but helping her is a full time job with a special diet and meds 4 times a day.
Whatever decision you make will not be easy.

I am so sorry to hear what you are going thru. I inow you want her happy and healthy and suggest you get her to a veterinary Teaching University..At least you will know that you did everything possible for her.....
4 Vets could not pinpoint Elizabeths problem and thank GOd one of them refferred me to Texas A&M Vet school, where tests were done and they found out what the problem was...Of course, it costs, but heck what is plastic good for cept for emergencies?????
My prayers are with you and Isabel

Update on Isabel
After talking to the Four vets that is at the Emergency Animal Clinic, We decided for the welfare of our little Isabel that we should put her down. So last night about 6PM we visited her and then the Vet put her down while we held her. It was a very tough decision but we didn't think we could keep her healthy considering she had the liver shunt and also the cushings. She also had bad knees. We feel terrible to have to have made that decision and I am not quite sure it is fair of God to put this decision on us. But we will get over it with time.

Now the rest of the story, today our Daugher and Son-in-law came in carrying a new little puppy for us. She is a cocapoo and is black and white and weighhs about 2 lb. Very playful and in this short time it has helped us with the hurt. I just hope Isabel understands.
Thanks for listening to this old man. It seems the older I get the the harder I hurt when things like this happen.

We have to come up with a name for the puppy.
