We are heading to NH from Edisto beach State Park. We are thinking of I 77 to I 81 instead of I 95 to rt 17 to I 81. Are there any steep grades, good roads, and any other insights. Thanks in advance

Yes there is a steep grade at the North Carolina Virginia border at Fancy Gap. Check the web for grade info. I did not have any problem climbing it with my 99 F53 V10 towing my CRV.

If you still want to go this way but don't want the "hill" in Fancy Gap...try 77 to south of Charlotte..take the by-pass 485 to 85 to Greensboro..there pickup Rt 29 north..it is a great 4 lane road all the way up to I-66 at Charlottesville,Va...the 66 up to 81....a ralyy great route for a change...and Rt 29 moves right along...Chuck

We've travelled that way. Good road. Only hill I remember is Fancy Gap at the NC/VA border. Long but not steep. Enjoy the trip.

Yeah Fancy Gap is pretty steep, and long. but NO interstate grade will be overly steep. Just take your time going up.
Other than that. 77 ia a good road, with congestion around Charlotte and Statesville NC.

BTW. IF you care. It runs right by MY Ariy. you could jump off and see the sights, if you are tired of driving.

I-81 has heavy truck traffic, but generally flows well all through VA. It will likely be a more enjoyable drive than I-95, which has very heavy volume of all sorts, though the worst of it is north of route 17. I-81 can seem interminable on that stretch, but I think I'd opt for it myself.

It's I-64, not 66 in Charlottesville. The I-77 hill is not bad at all at the VA/NC state line. We drive it all the time. The grade on I-64 west of Chartlottesville is as bad or worse thann 77.

Sorry about that..you are correct it is I-64 at Charlottesville....but while the grade can be similar..I believe it is somewhat shorter.......Chuck

We have run I-77 a few times and had no problem at Fancy Gap. We are pulling a 34' 5er with a Hemi. Be glad you are going north as the southbound side is some of the roughest road we have traveled.(unless they have repaved) Good Luck and Happy Camping
