Rookie Rver [emoticon] here shouting a loud THANK YOU TO ALL!! Because of ALL OF YOUR coaching, and mentoring over the years on this forum (sometimes at campgrounds too) I averted something that could have turned out terrible!

I am in the habit of doing a complete "walk around" (twice) before pulling off....no matter how short of a time I've been out of the motor home. I am also in the habit of performing "visual maintenance" regularly throughout the motorhome. This time, while parked in the driveway preparing for a long road trip I noticed gas leaking from the generator. The gas was dripping through a small drain hole onto the generator's exhust muffler. Over time that turns into a deadly combination........fire!

Because of YOU.....YOU....and YOU too, I am on the Right and Safe road to rving.

Does thia happen to be a ONAN 5500 gen set?

I had the same problem on my Onan 5500 a few months ago. It seems that this model Onan had some defective fuel filters that happened to leak at the seams of the filter. The Onan 5500 has two filters on it, one is at the fuel pump and one is just under the carburator. Onan has now stated you only need one filter and it is a new model and has a new part number, and they have recommended removing the filter under the carb, and instead install an adapter in its place and hook the fuel hose right to the adapter. Then purchase the new part number filter and replace the filter at the fuel pump. I know a lot of people have had this problem and it is a wonder more have not caught fire because of this leak. Onan has a bulletin about this I am told but I can not find it. In my opinion there should have been a recall. Here is thelink to the adapter and the right filter part number.
Onan adapter and filter 149-2341-01

This is for a Onan Marquis GOLD 5.5 HGJAB.
The old fuel filter number which is not available now was 149-2629. You now use 149-2341-01

to remove the filter under the carb, get adapter A026E529, remove the old filter and screw in the adapter and then hook the fuel hose directly to the adapter.

othertonka! Thanks for the heads up on this fact relating to the Onan Marquis GOLD 5.5 HGJAB. That appears to be what we have, will look at it in the morning and if we have two filters, I will be looking to change it out as you describe.

We discovered the same leak on our Onan Genset 7HGJAB-900C two weeks ago and have been searching the internet for an Onan contact number or information related to a recall. I think that everyone should be filing these incidents with safecar.gov - https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ivoq/. Losing our lives to a fire is a serious issue and it should be taken seriously by Cummins - Onan.

Thank you. Something to add to the pre-departure check list. Been doing the walk around ever since DW watched a guy drive by our unit years 18 years ago dragging his electrical cord with the plug ripped off. Since we got the last unit, she does an additional walk around to double check. Two set of eyes seem better that one.

THANKS,

Just a few days after reading this I have the same problem!

Good to have a heads up on a problem before it happens to you.

My gen. (ONAN 5500 HGJAB) had only only one filter and that was at the carb. My leaking item (which looks somewhat like a filter) was the fuel pump (has two wires 0n it).

The old pump has been replaced with P/N A029F887 $102.36.

The new pump does not have the barb for the fuel line on its output.

It requires the adp. P/N A029S253 $16.70.
