Heading up the east coast tomorrow from Florida. Weather reports say winds will be 20 miles per hour. Is this too unsafe to travel in a MH?

Here is the site I use to determine wind speed/direction:

http://graphical.weather.gov/sectors/southeast.php#tabs

Click the topline > twice to go to tomorrow.

Then scroll over wind speed and direction.

Looks like a cold front coming through mid morning with winds clocking from SW to NW and increasing in speed through the day.

At best, you will have a heavy quartering headwind.

Too much of "is it safe" depends on the rig and driver for me to speculate.

Clearly Monday would be a MUCH nicer drive!

There IS NO set wind speed that is safe for all vehicles. Some are not safe in a dead calm and other can handle quite high winds. 20 MPH is less than the average days wind speed in parts of the midwest. If YOU don't feel in complete control, then it's not safe.

20mph is normally OK, but what you need to find out is whether there will be higher gusts expected. It is usually the sudden gusts that can catch a driver unawares and make it dangerous. Another thing to remember is that travel in a high profile vehicle in even moderate winds can be tiring, so you should be rested and alert. Listen to weather and news reports for any warnings about "high profile vehicles".

I would avoid 20 mph if I can. I have had compartment doors blow open and the awning come out in high winds. I now check the weather then arrange the trip based on the weather. More relaxed driving in lower winds. As said by others It will depend on how your Motorhome handles the winds.

Here is the forecast for our area (Daytona Beach/I-95) Since the wind will be coming out of the northwest at 20 to 25, you will be getting hit mostly on the drivers side with quite a bit of headwind in area. If you try to stay in the right lane, you can get a feel for it and see how much correction you are having to make. Beware of the passing lane as one of those 40 mph gusts could throw you into someone next to you. If you were running a tag axle, that would help quite a bit but your signature indicates otherwise plus you will be towing. Plenty of rest stops to wait it out if need be or to be safe, just spend an extra night here in the "Sunshine State". Campgrounds around the Daytona area are filling up quickly since bike week is starting soon so plan around that just in case. Good luck and if it doesn't feel right....don't do it.


Sunday...Considerable cloudiness with a chance of showers early in the morning...then partly cloudy in the late morning and afternoon. Windy. Highs in the mid 60s. Northwest winds 20 to 25 mph. Wind gusts to around 40 mph. Chance of rain 40 percent.

Depends on direction relative to travel, gusts, the RV and the driver. You have to establish your personal standards.

20 mph isn't all that unusual here, and if 20 mph meant no travel nobody would ever get across the plains. Large vehicle traffic usually starts getting reduced when crosswinds get to 30-40 mph and gusty, and over 40 mph the highway patrol may shut down particular highways if a number of vehicles are wrecking or blowing over. More often they get closed by rain or snow combined with winds that high, there is a big difference how much wind you can handle with road dry or road slick.

20 mph headwind can cost you an extra 1-2 mpg, as a tailwind it can gain not quite as much. As a crosswind it can make your vehicle a lot of work to handle, or it might make it undrivable. I will not keep going in 20+ mph winds driving a heavy rain, it those are the conditions you are expecting. For me those are "stop and wait it out" conditions.

Yeah, no wind ever blows at a steady velocity.. it takes but one gust to really mess with you.

Check the local forecasts and obey them!

X2 You need to be able to handle your rig in 20 mph winds or you're never going to be able to travel. The direction of the wind relative to your travel direction does matter, but we can handle 30-40 mph winds if they are largely head-on or tailwinds.

Yuma winds of yesterday (March 2nd) were plenty brisk, distant vistas disapeared in the dust. I would guess the 25 mph winds and gusts of 45 that were actually forecast were reached. We drove our car with no real concern, but towing vehicles especially trailers had the red flag warning on the computer. Nevertheless, friends made the journey to Apache Junction, one in a large 5th wheel and the other in a motorhome, towing, safely with limited concern. Their winds would have been mostly sidewides, out of the north.

Wind direction and vehicle type, together with your personal risk factor will help to make your decision, with experience you will find about what you can manage. Sometimes one can run into winds there was no forcast for, find a safe place to wait it out. Often leaving early in the day will get you more miles.
