New Cuota around Felipe Carrillo Puerto

Heading south from Tulum, we noted signage for a new cuota around Felipe Carrillo Puerto. It worked well.

Stayed at Bar Familiar last night. Food was good and inexpensive and you stay for free if you eat (Churchs' book mentions it)

We are spending night in Villahermosa at "El Gordo y San Pancho" (also in Church's'). Manager said they have seen a lot of Canadians, French, Swiss, and Germans but no Gringos

We lived in Puerto Rico for a number of years and there were lots of discussions about what Gringo means and where it originated. Lots of opinions. Tracing the facts it came down to a word used a very long time ago in Spain meaning anyone whose native tongue was not Spanish. Everyone puts their own spin on it but as near as I can tell that is where it came from.

Check the definitions and historical background of the term gringo. It's interesting.

Discussed the Gringo appellation with Canadians in Yucatán and they basically do not want to be confused with those of us from USA. And old saying is that you can tell the Yank backpacker from the acanadian, the Maple Leaf on the Yank's is bigger

Auto-correct, should be new cuota around Felipe Carrillo.

Canadians refuse to be considered Gringos. We are from New Mexico which is a fairly agreeable state of three cultures: Hispanic, Indian, and Anglo (aka Gringo). Hispanic covers the pre-colonial and colonial Spanish as well as modern Mexican. Anglo is anyone not of the other two: European, African, Oceanic, and Asiatic descent

Not all of us. Please don't generalise all Canadians and we'll try to not generalise all of you! In fact we are ALL Americans in this hemisphere. :B

P.S. If you go to your original post and click on EDIT you can correct the error in the title.
