2011 Duramax vs 2016 Cummins

I currently have a 2011 GMC 2500HD 4x4, Crew cab with the Duramax Diesel engine and Allison transmission. The truck has 155k miles on it and I am looking at the 2016 Ram 2500's with the Cummins diesel engines. Has anyone heard of any issues or own one of the 2015 or 2016's?

Presently the 3500 SRW is available with an optional 10k GVWR door sticker. It would make muck more sense to offer the 2500 with either a 10k or 11500k GVWR sticker, forget the 3500 srw and the 3500 is a dually.

So you believe that manufacturers will not have a warranty issue with a new 250/2500 used at 3/4 to 1 ton over the rating they gave a 250/2500 truck?

Thats an easy answer... a manufacturer looking for any reason to deny warranty coverage and keep costs low will obviously deny coverage if they can. The real question is, how many 3/4 ton trucks get "broken" as a result of being over the 10K lbs class limit, but still under their axle limits?

I towed at WAY over the manufacturers rating with our 2001.5 RAM for years! As our trailer grew larger with the existing truck.

HOWEVER if you is buying a new truck and tow a 5th wheel why mess around with a 250/2500 labeled truck when for less than the cost of an air bag addition, one can buy a 350/3500 SRW.

We bought the 2015 3500 SRW in Sept 2015 and had a 29' 5th wheel at the time. In May 2016 we bought a 39'4" 16K new 5th wheel and it matches up with the 2015 RAM 3500 numbers spot on, and I do not have to tow for the next 10 tens WAY over the manufacturers ratings.

So my only dog in this fight is buying new why mess with a class 2 truck if you are going to tow a 5th wheel that puts the truck beyond the manufacturers specs.

Wash, rinse, repeat. Labels aside, most consumers buy one of three flavors of full size pickup in this country - half ton, SRW heavy duty and DRW heavy duty. A few need more and move up from there.

Argue the labels all you want, but at the end of the day that's the simple truth.

Turtles, I've been saying the same thing around here for years, most just don't get it. There's no difference in trucks now a days between a 250/2500 and a350/3500 srw. A lot of f250s come with overload springs. With the same rear axle, front axle, motor, trans, and springs, that leaves a lift block being the difference and a sticker on the side.

The question that was asked of why anyone would buy a 2500 for a 5th wheel is inaccurate. It should be why would anyone buy a srw 3500 over a 2500. If you need more truck than a 2500 you need a dually.

I feel the same about 3/4 ton vs 1 ton. It's stupid. Stupid untrained drivers cause a million times more accidents than someone towing slightly above their weight rating but no one makes a fuss about that. 70yr olds driving motorhomes who arnt comfortable above 45mph or driving over medians are much more dangerous than putting 3500lbs tongue weight on a srw truck. Can't fix stupid with laws. In fact they are just making people more ignorant and reducing common sense.

Say what? Year after year us over 70 olds arrive at our snowbird parks despite the aggressive younger drivers on the highways of America.

I don't agree. I think it is insane that 2500 trucks are manufactured. The 2500's should have heavy enough rear springs to be able to handle the weight carry capacity of the SRW truck. The 2500 should replace the 3500 SRW. A 3500 should automatically get duals.

You have it backwards. A class 2 truck has a 10,000 limit. To tow the max a SRW truck can handle they need to label it as a class 3 truck (350/3500). It is the 250/2500 that are not needed.

However go to a dealers lot and you will find a hand full of 350/3500 SRW and a zillion 250/2500's. It all goes to the salesman saying you can tow anything with this here 250/2500! For years there was little difference between the class 2 and SRW class 3 trucks. RAM changed that for their trucks in 2014.

It might be that special ordered 350/3500 SRW out number 250/2500 special ordered trucks.

For RAM's the 3500 gives one the option of the better Aisin tranny(better in strength and forward gear ratios) and the HO engine.

No need to band aid the the rear end with airbags or Timbren helpers.

Only place the 68RFE better is the lower reverse ratio.
