RE: 2019 Dodge Durango with tow package? am I making a mistake?

If you can keep the loaded weight of the trailer at 5500 pounds or less You MIGHT be able to do it. 15% is the high end of tongue weight for travel trailers, 12% is probably closer to average. At 15% plus 100lbs for WDH you are at 925. Assuming the 1300 lbs payload is correct that leaves 375lbs for family. Not much, but 100-200 pounds over gvwr is not the end of the world, but never exceed axle and tire ratings. Are you a heavy family? The problem with running so close or slightly over ratings is that you will feel stuck and inflexible with things as simple as one of your kids wants to bring a friend along. One thing to consider is darn near every diesel 2500 towing a fifth wheel down the road is over gvwr and most are severely over, but since it's a "heavy duty" people throw the ratings out the window.

RE: Anybody ever buy a truck with a salvage title?

I think the biggest concern would be pesky electrical gremlins. My cousin hit a deer with his almost new 2017 f150 and was sure it would be totaled by the amount of damage. Even though the repair bill was huge, it didn't reach a certain percent of the replacement value so it was rebuilt. He was unhappy about it, but added a ford extended warranty and went on down the road. While he still owned the truck it was plagued with quirky but relatively minor electrical problems he assumes was a result of the accident. He subsequently traded it in because he never had the warm fuzzy feeling driving it again. So while the price is tempting, it truly would be a gamble and the upfront savings will be given back when you sell it.

RE: Silverado 2500hd 6l90e transmission service

My truck does have the crossover pipe below the transmission pan, but with the shape of the pan it had enough clearance to sneak the pan forward and then down.

RE: Silverado 2500hd 6l90e transmission service

Thanks for the help. I'm going to put a drain plug in the pan so I can do the service like you are. Planning to drain the fluid every 15k miles and every other time change the filter.

Silverado 2500hd 6l90e transmission service

Looking for advice on doing a pan drop and filter replacement on my 2012 Silverado 2500hd with the 6.0 gas and 6l90e transmission. My main question is does the exhaust pipe need to be lowered to completely remove the pan? The only videos I see on the net are half ton silverados where the exhaust pipe needs to be lowered. On my 2500hd the exhaust pipe does indeed run below the pan, but it appears to have enough clearance to work it off, but I know looks can be deceiving. Anybody here ever done this to a similar model year truck to give advice? Thanks!

RE: 2012 Yukon XL Towing 30Ft

With good sway control and LT tires you will be fine as long as your weights are correct. The unloaded weight of that length of trailer seems low to me. The wheelbase is as long as most trucks.

RE: Superduty Death Wobble

Seems like this is a problem that only happens on solid front axel vehicles. I had that happen with my 1987 Chevy v20, but it was because the tires were shot. Hasn't happened since new tires. Seems like I have heard of dodges with the same problem. Scary for sure when it happens, but doesn't seem to be widespread. As many of those trucks ford has on the road you don't hear much about it. The dealer in the article said not to drive the truck on rough roads.....I guess that means he can't drive in Michigan.

RE: block heater

One way to do a simple test without tools is to unplug it quickly in a dark setting and see if there is a spark. That will show if it is drawing power. Also, are you saying that it started harder when using the block heater than it did in the past without using it? Sometimes the block heater puts enough warmth in the engine that it won't call for the glow plugs to cycle.

RE: f350, 6.7

My father in law had an early 2011 that he drove for for 4 years Then passed it down to someone else that works for his company. Truck has nearly 300,000 miles and has been largely trouble free other than radiator issues. And they aren't known to be sticklers on preventative maintenance.

RE: F350, 10k GVWR differences

Kind of going off what ksss said....I'm thinking the HOA is simply trying to keep large commercial looking vehicles from being parked in driveways. Since a f350 srw with any gvwr looks the same as an f250 I highly doubt you need to worry about what the sticker actually says.

RE: Dual Fuel Generators

We have a 15 year old briggs powered 4500 watt continuous generator that was originally only gas but we added a propane/natural gas conversion kit easily and cheaply that still allows it to be run on gasoline. You might be better off to get a generator and adding a conversion kit to it that still allows you to use gasoline. That might limit you to machines with the big engine manufacturers (briggs Honda kohler etc). Many generators these days have Chinese engines on them that parts and aftermarket accessories aren't as readily available. We got our kit off ebay. You search the kit by the engine model, not the generator model. Just another option to think about.

RE: A new way to tow a 5’er!

Am I wrong or could sway get way out of hand with that setup?

RE: Coast on the uphills accelerate on the downhills

Have you thoroughly cleaned the existing tranny cooler? Lots of bugs and road grime accumulate over time and reduce cooling efficiency.

RE: Typical problem we all see in RV parks.

Stock diesels, even the older loud ones idling don't bother me. What does bother me is people who have modified their truck because they like to be heard and they let them idle endlessly. Even an old car with a failing exhaust system idling doesn't bother me because the owner didn't intentionally make their car loud. I like to be understanding of peoples lifestyles, but intentionally making a vehicle louder and then letting it run long periods at inappropriate times crosses the line from generally acceptable to selfish IMHO. Merry Christmas!

RE: Batteries

Did they get completely drained to the point the light you left on was completely out? How long did they sit like that? We had a few very cold nights in Michigan the last couple days. Did the batteries get well below freezing temperature during the time they were low?

RE: Letting diesel rv sit for 3 months

I wouldn't worry about a thing for 3 months other than maybe a battery tender to combat any small draws on the battery. Our tractors sit for 6 months at a time and don't have problems.
