Mike, thanks. Yup I have a much better understanding where I need to be. Like I said, the first post was a baseline for ideas. I know now where I need to be looking, and there are plenty to choose from in my category. Thanks!

Not to pop your bubble but your truck has 3.42’s NOT 3.73’s unless someone changed them. You should have researched the truck before buying anything. A 12k 5er LOADED is a good rig for your truck. Sure your truck will TOW IT but it won’t CARRY IT !!! According to Chrystler.com here is the window sticker showing 3.73. ***Link Removed***https://www.chrysler.com/hostd/windowsticker/getWindowStickerPdf.do?vin=3C6UR5KL7JG303387 Aslo on the Ram towing guide page it says 17,100lbs Max towing and 2,270 Max Payload. Maybe I am missing something? It's 3.42 plain and simple on "ANY SRW" newer Diesel RAM thru 2018. https://i.imgur.com/4XfHqUfl.jpg Okay I got it. Now this confuses me even more, because the screen shot you posted says 3,160# payload, and 17,980# Tow. When I go to the Ram Towing guide web page and put in the Vin# I get 2,270 Payload and 17,100# towing. Meh, what the hell to believe!!!!

Well close, the payload listed in the door sticker accounts for a 150# driver and there is debate on fuel, but most account for a full fuel tank. What I don't see on your option list is the 5th wheel prep package, (AKA Puck System) for a 5th wheel hitch. With a 2,270# Payload you will hard pressed to carry a 10,000# 5er within the numbers. Okay I got it now. See this isn't a deal breaker. We are NOT going to go full time, we are only going to go out and visit family, and do some fun traveling, we will always have home to come back to. I just pull a slightly smaller RV to keep myself in the safe range. It's just the wife and I, so we don;t need a massive RV, pretty much just a place to sleep and just have some fun. That's why I came here in the first place, I looked at and got the truck I wanted, now I find an RV to match the truck, which was to original intent. My first post was to give an idea where I was thinking (because I was not sure). Now I know what to look for. So I can tow a 16# trailer no problem, just can't haul the weight on the pin. I know what to look for now. Thanks everyone for chiming in.... "D"

This is where so many go wrong when looking at MAX tow ratings.. Right, I get that. One should never really to to MAX anyhow because it leaves no room for anything else. Your Laramie is a upper trim level, which will reduce available payload. The 17,000# max trailer is what you can pull, NOT what you can carry. The available payload as the truck left the factory is located on the drivers door pillar. It is likely less than 2,500# BEFORE you add passengers, hitch, stuff, and passengers. I think I get this. When I go to Ram Towing Guide and look up by Vin It says 2,270 Max payload. So I take 2,270 and subtract myself, the wife, hitch, fuel and anything else, and that is the MAX pin weight I can have. Right? OR is that Max Payload I can put into the truck? Now to carrying a 16,000# 5er, you are now pushing DRW territory. Unlike a TT to tow well you need a pin weight of 20% to 25% of the 5er's GVW. So if you do the math at 14,000# 20% = 2,800# and 25% = 3,500#. Now step up to a 16,000# 5er, 20% = 3,200# and 25% = 4,000#. Okay I got that. You will get a lot of those saying GVWR has no meaning, and go by rear axle and tire ratings. Well you state 6,000# rear axle rating, empty bed near 3,000# leaves about 3,000# for pin and other stuff. Yea there are a LOT of people who tow wrong, so that's why I am here, to make sure I tow right. So one other thing the 2500 only came with 3.42's and the RFE68 trans. So how come the window sticker on both the truck and on Chrystlers web page say 3.73?

No, the axle rating and pin weight aren’t directly related. Axle weight comes from the pin weight, but it includes the truck weight and weight distribution affects it. Payload is what determines the pin weight you can handle. You take the payload number and subtract the weight of everything you add to the truck including passengers, fuels etc. and what you have left is available payload. Are you sure your 3500 only has 10,000lb GVWR? Your numbers look more like a 2500. Okay, so Max Payload Minus wife and I (354 lbs), minus Fuel, and anything else is what the pin weight can not exceed. So for instance if I have GVWR of 10k, and everything I put in the truck is 2klbs, that means I can have up to 8k LBS pin weight?

Greetings and weight question

Greetings, Don here from Southeast AZ. We are looking to get a FW, but have no real rush because we want to research, and pick the best rig for us. We just purchased our new 2018 Ram 2500 Laramie. 6.7 Cummins and a 3:73 rear end. I pulled the vin up on Ram towing guide and it says 17,100 LBS Max towing. The GVWR is 10,000 lbs and rear axle Max is 6,000. I understand the dry weight and GVWR weight as well as pin weight. So here is my question. IF I get a trailer that has a GVWR of 16K lbs, and a pin weight under or at 2k lbs I should be okay right? In other words the 16K LBS GVWR is under the 17,100 Max towing, and the pin weight of 2k lbs is under the 6K Max axle capacity. Am I correct in my thinking? I want to make sure I am researching the right FW and weights BEFORE really looking. Thanks in advance. Don.
