RE: Crossing into Canada

I tried to get across and the border guard asked me about AriveCan. I told him I couldn't make it work and why. He get a strange look in his face and said "Who could possibly not have a working email ?". He denied my entry and sent me back to the U.S. In the time it took you to post here you could have a half a dozen free email accounts. If you choose not to go, that’s your decision but please don’t invent silly excuses for it. I understand your position. I just wanted to see if I could drive across the border for no good reason on a whim. I found out that you can't. Like you said my decision. As for a dozen email address I'm not going to do that. I already have 2. That's plenty. One that worked would be good but, I'm not going to keep making new ones every time some computer bug pops up. I also only have one Credit Card and I pay the balance off every month. I have one Charge Card and it comes out of my check book so when I'm forced to use it to buy gas I write the amount and place of purchase in the check register so I know how much I'm spending . (More people should do that) I've been banking that that same small town bank for 48 years. (My mom started me a savings account there when I was 10 years old, I still have the same account ) I have one insurance company and I have all my insurance though them. I've been living on the same house for over 30 years. The point I'm trying to make is that I like to keep things simple. I'm not going to open another email. After the Centurylink one quit working everyone else that is important accepted by gmail address accept for the government of Canada. I really don't need to go to Canada anyway if I did then I would have to figure something out. If try again it won't be until next summer when I get way up that way again. (It's a 6 hour drive for me. I haven't been that far from home since the eclipse of the sun in Nebraska a few years go.) I don't get more then 100 miles from home very often.

RE: Crossing into Canada

It does surprise me that the Canadian border official denied your entry. I've found them always courteous and helpful, while still being serious in their job. Perhaps there was an "attitude conflict" on the part of either you or the official. No, I was nice and courteous and he was also. He did try to be helpful. Said that a relative or friend with a e-mail address could fill out the ArriveCan thing and something about I could take a screen shot of it ? (Not that I have any idea how to do that) I will admit that when he asked why I wanted to enter I said something like "just to see if I can , I have never been over the border before and I wanted to see what it took to do it" . Again he put a funny look on his face, and after he denied me entry, he said that if I got the ArriveCan thing straightened out that if I wanted to try again and said that I was going to Thunder Bay for supper that would be a valid excuse. Basically, I found out what I wanted to find out. You just can't cross international borders on a whim. Even the one with Canada, our closest ally. Maybe I will try again someday if I have a real reason to go. But, you can't just drive across for no good reason. Oh well, like I said, I didn't really need to go. I just wanted to see if I could and now I know that I can't. I hope that I'm not on some U.S. and Canadian CIA type file now but, I probably am.

RE: Dometic A/C Capacitors Smoking! Replacement part?

Our local electrician keeps the on hand. We have a lot of electric motors on the farm that use all sizes of capacitors. Is there a electric motor repair shop near you ? Maybe you can purchase on from there.

RE: Crossing into Canada

Hi , I'm the orignal poster. I tried to get across and the border guard asked me about AriveCan. I told him I couldn't make it work and why. He get a strange look in his face and said "Who could possibly not have a working email ?". He denied my entry and sent me back to the U.S. In any case I'm not going to be leaving the country. It's to hard. I know at least a dozen people with no internet and no email. For example: I have a good friend, he has a good job for a rural water provider. His wife works at the health clinic. They own their home, have nice vehicles, have a camper, and a boat. They don't have internet or emails and they don't want it. Another Example: I know a woman that just retired. She doesn't have any internet either. She says she has never needed it and doesn't want to pay for it. Heck, She just got her first cell phone last year. None of these people, and many more, can go to Canada. I'm guessing the number of people in the U.S, that can't go is probably in the millions. Oh Well. They just don't seem to want our money. I had lots of fun on the North Shore of Lake Superior here in MN. I really didn't need to go to Thunder Bay Canada and I guess I never will. Canada's loss.

RE: Crossing into Canada

Caveman: Here is my advice regarding email: Start over at gmail. Make a new name and account. No dots except before "com". I have about 5 gmail addresses and it is not a problem. I use one for things I really want, and the others are for the hucksters and morons out there to use. Yes, that would be for the best. Then I will have to move everything over to the new one. It was best when I had just one and life was easy.

RE: Crossing into Canada

Officially you need to use the ArriveCan. I used it 3 weeks ago at Detroit/Windsor and it worked fine, though a bit fussy. However, I'm hearing that if you get to the border and claim "it didn't work/no internet access/old and stupid", the border person will in all likelihood approve you. You still need your passport (or enhanced DL) and your covid card. So if they don't, not a lot lost. Turn around and come back. Coming back, you need your passport (or enhanced DL). Ya, I think your right. I will give it a try and if it doesn't work it doesn't work. What about all the people I know that don't have the internet or a e-mail address ? I in a real pickle with my e mail. I always used internet explorer to get it. One day, without sending me a notice, internet explorer no longer support e mail. So my computer guy says what is your e mail address. I tell him it's with CenturyLink and I give him my user name and password (which I have written down). Seems Centurylink doesn't think that is my user name. They will gladly send me a new user name,,,,,by e mail....But, I can't get my e mail without the user name and I can't get the user name without the e mail. :M So I have been trying to switch everything to gmail. But, my gmail address has a extra Dot in it. Some websites ( including apparently the government of Canada) won't accept a e mail address with a extra Dot in it. I'll give someone a 100 dollars to get the whole mess straighten out. No one will do it for that low price though. I'm about ready to move out into the woods of Canada and live like a hermit. Except,,, OH, that's right !!! I can't get into Canada because I don't have A FLIPPIN E MAIL ADDRESS. :M

Crossing into Canada

I will be camping on the North Shore of Lake Superior in MN from July 18-23 . I will be close enough to Canada that I could drive across. What requirements do I need to cross ?? And what to cross back ??? I have a Passport (never been used) I have a photo copy of my Covid Card. But, on-line I see all sort of places saying all sorts of things I have to sign up for. Something about ArriveCAN ? I tried and I can't make that thing work. Maybe I'm doomed. I only have 2 days to figure it out.

RE: TT When Solo....OR Truck Camper?

I love my short 22 foot TT. It's so easy to unhook and go places if I want to. You may find that when you are by yourself there is much less stuff that you need to bring with. That makes going places easier. As much as I love camping with the girlfriend, her grand kids, kids, and extended family I also love just hooking up to the TT and going out with a couple of changes of underwear. Just use what you have without all the extra stuff that a large group need to bring with. Just hook up and go !!!!!

RE: Sometimes you don't need to camp to see critters...

Wow, None of them around here. I think I would be nervous if one of them wandered though my yard. I'm glad I don't need to have a fence that big to protect my garden.

FWIW, there is an "Old-Biscuit" on IRV2. OK forum if you can stomach a heavy dose of politics. No I can't. Thanks for letting me know. I won't be checking that out.

RE: Fuel cost in your area

I got 20 gallons today for $3:98 in Spirit Lake Iowa by using my grocery store Cents Off Per Gallon card. If you buy certain groceries you can save on gas. The certain groceries you buy are marked up to make up for it and then some, but it makes folks feel better. Sometimes yes !! You do have to watch out for that !! It takes a little figuring out each week to see what is the best stuff to purchase. For a lot of people it might not work but, I check out the advertisement on line each week on Wednesday when it come out and then check the prices compared to other sources. You also have to decide if you can or want that item ! Sometimes you can save on gas if you purchase things like 4 boxes of cereal. I can't eat 4 boxes of cereal before it gets stale. It takes me a little time on computer each week to do some checking but, then again it takes me a little time on computer each week to check this site too. To each their own.

RE: Everybody must get stoned, rock on...

Actually the the city fathers of Payson had the foresight to deal with the issue of water years ago. They built a reservoir that's sole purpose is to ensure Payson will always have a reliable water source unlike many areas of the southwest. Water is diverted from the reservoir into the Verde River every year ensuring its continued flow year round. Additionally at 5,000' we get lots of rain {as shown in the photo I posted} and even decent snowfall most years. As for my yard it is a small lawn {see my previous post from 6/29 on page 1 of this thread} and 5 minutes a day a few days a week are all I need to run the irrigation system, during the Monsoon and less during the colder 5 months of the year. Other than my 20' X 20' garden {4 fruit trees, Blackberries, Raspberries and a few tomatoes} every tree {Ponderosa Pine, Juniper, Oak, Manzanita etc} and plant on our .57 acre lot are all native that do well in the drier years. I paved our driveways and have used stone and gravel extensively to help control runoff and keep the dust down. When we lived in Tucson the entire yard was rock with all of the plants on drip irrigation but then the High Sonoran Desert is a totally different environment. :C Thank you for your answer

RE: Everybody must get stoned, rock on...

You betcha! I confess to spending a fair amount of time taking care of my garden and the lawn...cheap entertainment. Happily the Monsoon has arrived. We have had a quarter inch of rain or more 4 of the last 5 days. We just finished a monster thunderstorm that dropped .75" in 45 minutes with lots of very intense lightning directly overhead. Funny story... When we were looking for a place here in Payson the Realtor said this one had a "Seasonal stream", turns out it is just a drainage ditch but fortunately it works quite well. It went from bone dry to this in about 15 m minutes: https://i.imgur.com/YiVl6xjl.jpg https://i.imgur.com/sbMkaKgl.jpg :B Isn't the Colorado river levels so low that Lake Mead and Lake Powel going dry? Wouldn't it be better to put natural plans in your yard that don't use so much water ? Soon a lot of the southern states will have little water and limited electricity and people will have to move somewhere else. I don't know what part of the state you are in though.

RE: Can trailer tires be patched?

I've had a lot of tire plugs in my life. My local mechanic says that the insurance won't let him use them anymore. Too bad. Then the right circumstance they would work fine. But, the picture of the tire with the big bolt in it is not something I would do. It's to big of a hole. A nail is fine but, a bolt is to large of a hole for me to feel good about it. To each their own. Have a nice day.

RE: Cleaning Water Jugs

I'm sorry... I've drunk out of too many garden hoses. When I finish using my extra water containers, I rinse them and let them dry out and then recap them. When I want to use them again, I just rinse them out several times and use them. Been doing that for a couple decades. Not dead yet! Me too. You must let then get really dry. If they are dry then a lot of nasty things can not live without water for very long.

RE: My Fridge Died

Up to you of course! Gotta take the fridge out anyways to fix it, wouldn't take long to try it. It's actually not that bad to remove. I had mine out on the floor in about half an hour. Short term fix? Like anything, it's a tumble of the dice. 6 years later mine was still going strong, and I know the guy I sold it to. Last time I talked to him it was still working. Good luck on your repair, hope it doesn't cost too much. :) Let us know the outcome. OK, I will give it a try. I think the fridge will fit though the door of the camper. I will take closer measurements this weekend. The camper is at Gull Point State Park on Lake Okoboji Iowa right now. That is about 1.5 hours south of me. To get a spot for the 4th of July I had to set it there 14 days in advance at $16 a day. When I am down there this weekend I will take better measurements and look for a plug to put in the propane line. After I come back from that park on the morning of the 5th I work until Friday the 8th and then I have a camping spot at a county park only 35 minutes from home. I will remove the fridge at the park and try your suggestion. I'll take along a old car battery and I should be able to tell if it works at the park. After that I come home and work for a week. Then the weekend of July 16th and 17th I'm taking some kids down to Arnolds Park Amusement Park on Lake Okoboji Iowa. It's a small amusement park but, in the 80's the were going to turn it into condos. It was saved by chartable events and is now a non-profit. I try to support them by taking some low income kids there every year and paying for their day at the park. The week of July 18-23 I'm towing an old pop up camper I bought that I named "Plan B" to the Minnesota's north shore of Lake Superior that's about a 6 hour drive for me. I have 6 days to see the whole north shore and Duluth. It will be a busy week. I come back from there on a Monday and work Monday afternoon until Thursday morning. Then I hook up to the main camper again and head to MN Whitewater State Park 3 hours east of me for 3 days. Then I have a wedding the first weekend in August and a concert to go to that weekend. Then I have to stay home for a week while my boss takes a week off to go camping. Then I have the weekend of August 19-20 planed to go to a county park a hour south of me. Then I work for a week. Then I go to MN Camden State Park 1.5 hours north of me for a weekend. Then I don't have anything planned in September. So, as you can see this was not a good time for something to break. I wish I could just hire someone to fix it for me local but, there is no one around here. Hopefully shaking it around fixes it. It really sucks that it broke but, ship happens, I guess.
