MDKMDK "There's a Motel 6 and a Quality Inn right across the street from the Pilot you were in, and at least 2 or 3 truck repair centers within a few hundred yards of same." Not at that exit-or at least, not on that side of the freeway. All we had around us was fields. Georgetown has several exits. We have already communicated with GS and are waiting to hear back from them, which we haven't as of tonight-two days after we contacted them. I will try again tomorrow...

Very disappointed with Good Sam

We were on our way south for a quick breath of warm air on Saturday, Feb. 29 at 9 p.m. or so when the serpentine belt on our truck broke just 5 miles short of our destination for that night. We managed to coast into the Cherry Blossoms Pilot Travel Center at Exit 129 on I-75 south in Georgetown, KY, before totally losing power, where I called Good Sam. After giving the call center a great deal of information, it was determined that it would take several hours, if not all night, to get our truck and RV towed to a repair center, where because the next day was Sunday, we would have sat like chickens until the repair center opened up on Monday. An effort was made by Good Same to get a mobile mechanic to us that night, but after talking to the mechanic myself it was determined that the mechanic was 80 miles away and would not come out at all until Monday. And no, Good Sam would not tow us to a nearby motel-only to a repair center. And the call center operator said she could not locate a motel near a repair center, she wasn't authorized to do that. But she wouldn't tell us which repair shop Good Sam wanted to send us to, either, so we could look it up ourselves. I hung up the phone. We spent the night, which was cold, in our RV in the travel center and turned on the propane on the RV stove to keep warm. In the morning we were VERY fortunate to talk to an employee who was kind enough to contact another mobile mechanic who was right in the area, who went out of his way to get us back on the road and on schedule later that day. We will always be grateful to Shawn DeVaughn, the employee at that Pilot Travel Center. Without him we could very possibly still be there. I am very disappointed in Good Sam, to say the least, and will NOT be renewing my insurance next year...I had JUST renewed it for this year before this event occurred, if it had occurred a few weeks earlier, I would have saved myself $120.

RE: membership extension offer

Thanks, I realize that. I was not born in the Stone Age. That still doesn't make it right. And my immediate issue is with the "free extension" of the club membership-all I have to do is drive 120+ miles for that "free extension".

RE: Everglades and Big Cypress camping in Feb. - availability?

Check the Reserve America site for Collier Seminole State Park, which is in the Big Cypress but not far from Marco Island/Naples. I'm sure they have availability for tents. I know there's a washer and dryer there, I think showers, too. Good luck.

membership extension offer

We have been members of the Good Sam Club for almost a year and discovered this year that our cost would be $29.99 rather than the $10 we paid last year. Since we only used the membership for about a $10 savings on gas at Pilot/Flying J last year, we decided not to renew. But then we got a card in the mail saying we would be renewed for free if we took the card to our "nearest" Camping World store, which for us is 120+ miles away and not a place we're going to go to in the dead of a very snowy winter to, effectively, save $10. Called the Houghton Lake, MI ("nearest") store and was told that they could not do it over the phone, nor could I mail them the coupon-that a personal visit was required...well, you know, that sucks...so no new membership for us this year! I am also seriously re-considering the Roadside Assistance insurance we have that is also up for renewal, which has also increased in price from your "introductory offer". This is how loyal members are rewarded?? C'mon, Good Sam, you can do better than this! Tim and Linda Gallagher

RE: Review of our shakedown Florida trip

We're off to the Sunshine state again this year, just a week later than we went last year, due to campground availability. I am looking into the Kentucky Horse Park campground in addition to two overnights (going and returning) at the Interstate Campground in Byron, GA., five nights at the Lake Manatee State Park campground and one night in Silver Springs at the Silver Springs RV Park. Had hoped to be able to do the boat tour in Silver Springs, we both did that as children, but they are all booked up already for the time that we'll be in Silver Springs. It's a shorter trip than last year, but it will be a bit more relaxing with fewer moves...
