RE: One more week then "empty nester"

It's a big adjustment to "empty nester-ness" - sort of a paradox between the house seeming empty; but also having the freedom to do whatever/whenever you want :-) I solved the too quiet/empty house feeling with 2 boisterous dogs - they provide the chaos that dominated the first half of my life....>LOL! Having had a large family, I'm still incapable of making a simple pot of chili for Ed and I - that wouldn't feed a large Army regiment. Our plan is to get two puppies when we can (very hard to come by right now) even if we still have Jake. Agree wholeheartedly about substituting dog chaos for kid chaos-at least we can put the dogs in crates if they bug us too much LOL! I'm going to have to figure out how to cook small batches of chili, stew, spaghetti, etc. and how to buy meat for 2 and not 3! (My son has a BIG appetite!)

RE: Travel to Alberta

Yes, it occasionally gets a little nippy here! Only minus 17C here in Calgary this morning, not too bad.... Winter is coming now. If I've done my math right that's about 1-2 degrees F. Was about the same in parts of NH this morning and a few areas were a little colder. Love Alberta. Been to Banff and Jasper twice. It's one of the most beautiful areas in North America.

RE: One more week then "empty nester"

You will miss him,but I bet you wont miss telling him to pick up his clothes,"your not going out with that dirty shirt are you?",and other sayings. And less laundry, but you have to carry the laundry basket yourself now. Enjoy the new time in life, but keep the memories. He's done his own laundry since he was 12. If he wanted to go out with a dirty shirt, I let him after about the age of 15. At 29 his room is still a disaster area. There are too many BIG things in life to worry about with kids. Got some great advice from my oldest BIL when my son was a baby-if you get on them for everything they listen to nothing. If there won't be permanent harm or if they are not in immediate danger let it ride and use it as a learning experience. Some of my favorite memories are of his "mistakes".

RE: One more week then "empty nester"

Tell him you want a few grandchildren and the first one darn quick, and keep in mind you can invite them over for Sunday lunch or dinner each week. The only thing I can see with the young crowd now is instead of having children they have dogs and cats. At least that is what it seems here at the RV parks Guy LOL! They do plan on having a family but my future DIL is only 25 so it's something for their future. When they get settled we will set up dinners on as regular as a basis as we can. The problem with them being 40 minutes away is it makes it hard to do something mid-week. They are busy on weekends so we don't want to tie up a lot of Sundays. We will work things out eventually.

One more week then "empty nester"

One more week and hubby and I are "empty nesters". I am so happy for my son that he has been able to purchase a home of his own and he's found the love of his life. BUT it's hard to imagine him not being here almost every day. At 29 it's definitely time to fly the coop. Now it's time for our next chapter whatever that may be. My son is only moving 40 minutes away which is great but still my heart "grieves" in a manner. My heart goes out to those reading this that have lost children. I can't imagine what it's like knowing you'll never see them again. This, too, shall pass as my MIL used to say.

RE: It's a wonderful day: COVID vaccinations

I just got an appointment for next Wed about 35 miles away. I checked and there were many times for this 1 location and none of the others. They were all gone within 10 minutes. Distribution is not the problem, an adequate supply from Pfizer and Maderna is. Many states running out. From what I've read Johnson and Johnson's vaccine should be ready soon.

RE: Unnecessary Warnings Shown on Products

I don't know, some warnings really need to be heeded. I had a former boss while getting ready to hit the bed picked up a tube of Preparation H instead of toothpaste. He disappeared. LOL! I've had a boss or two like that!

RE: It's a wonderful day: COVID vaccinations

Unless they increase the rate of vaccines getting to NH I'm looking at months before I can get a shot. Estimate is at the current rate it will take 17 weeks to get through Phase 1B. I'm hoping Biden accepts Amazon's offer of distribution help-I think it's needed. NH is already at 6% vaccinated (5.6% nation wide) and the rate has been accelerating. At least at the national level, if the pattern follows with no increase, we should hit around 30% vaccinated somewhere around mid april (10-12 weeks), which should largely clear out the Phase 1B category and they will likely open the next category before it's finished so they don't artificially restrict demand. If J&J gets their vaccine approved as expected, that's somewhere around a 50% boost in supply, so things should accelerate even further. Lots of positive news. I think we are getting a lot of effort to lower expectations so they can trumpet beating estimates rather than explain missing ambitious goals. I was notified to sign up today!!!! Yippee!!!! My appointment is in February.

RE: Thankful for Honest People

Maybe a biker/trucker wallet with the chain. Maybe hook it to the handle and lay it in your lap? Once went to the hospital because when I woke up I could barley move.Back was killing me. Doc asked what I do for a living..said drive a truck. He said give me your wallet.Removed it from my back pocket and he said never put it back in your pocket. Over 2 million miles with no back problems. I do keep it in my back pocket when on the motorcycle and after about 6 hours I can feel it in my back. My husband was experiencing back pain and the doc said the same thing-remove the wallet from your pocket when you drive. I'm kind of saddened it seems to come as a surprise when someone is honest. I believe most people are but the ones who aren't get all the publicity.

RE: It's a wonderful day: COVID vaccinations

I kind of figured that was the intent but the way it read sounded like you were heading straight out from the hospital to hit the Golden Corral. LOL! No Golden Corral near here that I am aware of. RE: Unnecessary Warnings Shown on Products

I'm sorry - peanut allergies are not funny. I don't think that was the intent. It's just absolutely absurd to put a warning label on a bag of peanuts that it may contain peanuts! People with allergies have to take precautions, but also some responsibility. Yes, indeed. I am allergic to cooking sherry. If I consider ordering anything with a sauce or "special ingredients" I always ask there is sherry in it.

RE: It's a wonderful day: COVID vaccinations

PS: Someone mentioned going out to dinner after they get the vaccine. I assume they meant to say in 2-3 weeks after getting it. For all practical purposes, the day you get the vaccine, it hasn't provided any level of immunity. That was me and yes, I intend on waiting until I get both doses. I'd be curious to see any reactions people might have. I'm never nervous about getting a flu shot but this one makes me a little edgier.

RE: Unnecessary Warnings Shown on Products

My last class in college was on business ethics. We studied the original case that started the warning labels. A man was mowing his law while his young son and new baby where outside. He went inside, left the mower running and his son decided to be "daddy's little helper" and proceeded to run over the baby. The parents sued and the rest is history. This is also why they now have dead man switches.

RE: It's a wonderful day: COVID vaccinations

Never thought I'd be happy to be diabetic but that plus the bout of heart failure I had and being prone to asthma from viruses put me in the next phase of shots (1B as it's called here) despite only being 60. Because my husband also gets asthma and has a heart condition he also got bumped up on the list. Phase 1B starts next week but they are starting with 65-74 year olds first. Aged 75+ have already been inoculated as well as first responders, LTC facilities and a few more. NH is back to 100% capacity but with social distance rules in place. Once both hubby and I get shots we are going out to dinner!!!
