RE: Need advice if safe for my pickup to pull a heavy 5th wheel

Heck..
my truck has a max pin weight of 4020# and is a newer generation ( 2020 ) F350 SRW.. I also have disc brakes on the fiver, stopping in a panic is NOT an issue... IF your ok towing at MAXIMUM, it can be done safely
Too funny! It's NEVER about can it stop it, it's about can it handle it!!! BIG DIFFERENCE

RE: 2024 Chevy HD DRW and SRW Fuel Economy Test

"I" like to fill my fuel tanks to the top if possible. Not so easy and have never accomplished this with the Jeep Grand Cherokee.
"I" like to change ALL my transmission fluid, not been able to accomplish this on my AISIN.
"I" have things that "I" do for my own reasons.
"I" was known for the picky Superintendent. My Dental Clients always asked if I was available to remodel or build their next Clinic. I built/remodeled over 100 in the Greater Seattle area. Seen a Gentle Dental Clinic? I most likely built it and many more.
Some may think I am crazy but that's fine with me. I had 65,000 career hours and retired at 54 years old based on my picky nature.
I do agree having the DEF usage involved makes these highly un accurate fuel economy tests more useless.

"Isn’t that a phot or the pan on his 68RFE? Back when he considered that a great transmission?"
YES, I still consider it a great trans! I never had any of the issues some reported. It shifted firm and precise.

RE: 2023 F350 6.7 HO Towing 10k lb Review

My 68RFE regularly saw temps above 200*. 220* was pretty common for me. Must be that Amsoil fluid that keeps yours so cool.
You mean this Amsoil fluid and his aftermarket finned oil pan. We know all about it. :B

RE: 2023 F350 6.7 HO Towing 10k lb Review

RAM having adjustable spots is a waste of money as I set mine once to the furthest out position and never adjusted again.
My big concern for the FORD is the HOT transmission temps. I never see over about 172 pulling in near 100 degrees on long 6% grades. Most of the time I run 165-167.
Shows how dumb it is to do a leveling kit on a tow vehicle.
No denying it it has a ton of power!
I don't doubt the Aisin will do that if you say so ,the 68RFE will not running those long grades. I will see nearly 200 with my 68RFE , solo it runs a pretty consistent 172 , towing in hot weather it's a consistent 185-190 .
My 68RFE in my HO DRW never saw 200 unless it was stop and go. For sure it did not run as cool as my AISIN does.
Maybe the Ford at those temps gets better mileage???

I NEVER said it was overheated! FACT, transmission fluid lasts longer the cooler it's ran. Longer intervals on the change would be concerning to ME as I mentioned. Just my OPINION kids!!!

RE: Dodge 3500 towing heavy

Me Again made a good point, it's a triple axle so that should lower the pin to 15% maybe a bit more. Best to weigh, like we mentioned the 17" tires are a potential problem.
"Even 12V is a weight cop now? Lol" NAW, just pointing out potential issues.

RE: Air ride pin box question

You need to air it up to 100psi overnight then do your adjustment after hitching. Give it a try, worked for me.

RE: Air ride pin box question

On my previous DRV I had the same pinbox. I was told on a DRV forum that TrailAir said to pump to 100psi and it should seal whatever was allowing the pressure to drop. I did the suggested and it did worked.

RE: Air ride pin box question

Fill it to 100psi and let it set.
Fill bag so arrow tips are aligned with designated point. That's it as it does not matter if it is at an angle or not. Won't hurt to lower the pressure from there is you want.

RE: Air ride pin box question

If you have the recommended pressure or too much air for your trailer wt it is reeeeel easy to high-hitch and when you tug you can not tell cause the jaws are closed, dropped mine once going to sell it get a decent pin box Dan
Let me guess your hitch has 1/2" thick jaws.

RE: Carbon ceramic pads question

"You get 145,000 miles out of the OEM brakes? LOL"
You obviously don't own a modern diesel with an exhaust brake.
I also obviously live in the real world. There is no way in hell you are getting 145,000 miles, or anything even close, out of OEM brakes. Or aftermarket either. Not even if you have half a dozen exhaust brakes on the truck and 3 on the trailer.
Internet forum BS.

I have been on this Forum much longer than you so I will cut you some slack. Ask any longtimers on here they will tell you I don't lie or exaggerate as I have no reason to do so.
I am sure you will say the same about me getting 65k with plenty of tread on my DRW Michelin's with tread left. That's towing 1/2 the miles with full RAWR load. I also used to get 120k easily with 3rd gen Michelin's on my 98 12V 4x4.

RE: Dodge 3500 towing heavy

Wouldn't be the first time a rig like that has hit the road with a family happily singing campfire songs all the way there and back again...
Assuming that your truck is in best possible mechanical condition with good tires that aren't too old, You'll be more than happy with it on the flat. Iowa's pretty flat isn't it?
The trailer shouldn't weigh 15,500lbs, that's just the GVWR, the capacity of the two 7000lb axles plus 1500lbs of it on the pin. Odds are it will have closer to 3000lbs on the pin just because of the way these things tend to be balanced, but a 3500 SRW should easily have 4000lbs of capacity before hitting the tire limit. It'll squat but you can get airbags for that.
Far far far more likely that you will simply be unhappy with how things handle LONG before the rig is "unsafe." With half a brain you should know it's unsafe within a few miles of your first drive. Nurse it home and address the issues.
My DRV is "Rated" at 21k. It actually weighs 24k with a 25% 6k pin weight. The 15,500# GVWR can EASILY be obtained and more!!! Many tandem axle 5er's have a 25% pin. NOT a smart choice to use this SRW with that RV.

RE: Dodge 3500 towing heavy

For one the stock tires are 17" with a little over 3k capacity with the SRW truck. Most likely right there your tires will be overloaded. That is too much RV for that truck IMHO. Will it pull it??? YES Will it handle it??? NO

RE: Air ride pin box question

Mmaxed - I have one of these Trailairs on my 2022 Cedar Creek and shared the same concern about the angle of the lower jaw. I have no problems hitching and unhitching.
There are 2 things I don't like about the Trailair - it looses air pressure and forces me to carry a compressor to ensure it is filled with air. And I don't like how it sits on my Curt Q24 hitch - this hitch is articulating and the head does not sit level when hitched up - it tilts slightly downward, towards the front of the truck.
Lippert says both of these things are normal, I disagree. I have had the airbag in the Trailair replaced once under warranty due to leakage and the replacement is just as bad. Maybe my dealer is the culprit and didn't install it correctly. I am working with my dealer to get the current air bag replaced.
Have you applied 100psi to the bag? That can help with air loss. The CURT design is the issue not the TrailAire. The heads pivot point being several inches below the kingpin connection is. This can lead to chucking, a common complaint against the CURT. B&W pivot point is right at the level of the kingpin.

RE: Carbon ceramic pads question

If you have an exhaust brake you should never experience "brake fade".
well that just speaks to the obvious. how can you have brake fade if you don't use your brakes :R
Obvious to you but others may not understand the advantages of having an EB. Having cool brakes when needed is a huge benefit. Emergency braking just one example.
