RE: 5th wheel hitch security

Had a friend who had some devious person pull a couple of pins on the rails on his truck. Went to hook up the trailer and did a test pull and found out there was a problem. He purchased locks for that online and that took care of it. I think I will do the same. If you were out next to nowhere, pins could be hard to locate. Curly

RE: Replacing New Trailer King RST+ : Only Option Is Carlisle??

Purchased Carlisle tires for my trailer last year and on the second trip blew one out. I had checked pressure before I left but did not have tire monitors on them. There was just a ring of rubber around the rim when a passerby let me know about the issue. Took them back to Discount Tire and purchased Goodyear Endurance. They have run fine. Curly

RE: New Truck question(s)

I think the Ford will give you the added gears in the transmission you were looking for while the GMC 6.6 gas is still stuck with the 6 speed. I have the 6.0 gasser and the six speed which for me is fine. The new trucks with the 6.6 gasser will only have a 3.73 rear end and what GM is saying is that the larger engine makes up for the gears. I preferred to have the 6.0 with the 4.10 until GM figures out what transmission they want to put in the newer trucks. The Ford may surprise you with what you want at a lower price than the GMC. Overkill may be a good thing with an RV. Curly

RE: Does the Color of an HD Pickup Make a Difference?

I think solid white with no metal flake is the best for resale as well as damage repair. It is easier to color match without needing to match the direction of the metal flake. Curly

RE: What do you think about this set up?

Quite a few years ago I had a very similar set up with a Chevy Tahoe, 350 CI engine and 3:42 gears. I did tow a 19' Wilderness and did two things. Ran out of power in the hills and burned up the rear diff. You will find out it is driving you and you are not driving it at the end of the day. The gearing is not right for the load you want to tow in my opinion. Curly

Highway 191 north of Morenci towing trailers

I would like to know how unsuitable for trailers is highway 191 from Morenci,Arizona to Alpine, Arizona. I have a fifth wheel that is about 29' long and my friend has a 28' tow behind trailer. Just want the best way from Tucson to Alpine for safe towing. Yes, I have lived here for years and have never gone that way. Thanks in advance, Curly

RE: Roll up tonneau cover for GMC 2500HD Short Bed

Problem I have with most of them is seeing where the hitch is out the back window with either a tool box or a cover. Perhaps a roll up would not block the view out the back. Curly

RE: GM 6.6 gas

The six speed trans is why I bought a 2019 and not the newer Chevy with the 6.6 gas and the six speed. Also, you can't get a 4:10 rear with that engine/trans in the new trucks. I will keep my 6.0 gasser with the 4:10 diffs until the new trans is offered. Curly

RE: need key help

Locksmith is a good answer. Wife locked keys in our fiver and locksmith had it open in no time. Could have made keys right there at the campsite. Curly

RE: King pin lock

I always lock the pin on my 5th wheel. It only takes a minute and gives me a little more secure feeling with all the nuts out there now. If they try and cut off this lock they will have to cut part of the pin so they can't tow in anyway. Curly

RE: Towing Nose High

I have the same problem with my truck and fiver. Our local shop tells me that a great deal of the new/newer trucks have the same problem and unless the trailer is so high that it compresses the springs on the back axle, it should be fine. Mine is about 4 inches high on the front compared to the rear and we have checked the axles for higher temps along with the tires and they are the same. On a trip across county in our car a while back you would be very surprised with the amount of nose high 5th wheels that we have seen. I am not saying that it is right but, it almost seems to be the norm with newer trucks. Curly

RE: TV tire life

I had 5 year old LTX Michelins and the left driver on my old truck blew out and did $2,000 damage to the truck. Not a fan of Michelin tires due to the fact I could only get average over three sets on the old truck of 32,000 miles on them. New truck came with Transforce and not a real fan of them either. Curly

RE: Looking for SUV recommendation

Please make sure with whatever you purchase, has a tow package with a good rear end ratio. I have been through this with a Tahoe with a 3:23 gear ratio and burned up the rear end. I do feel the Tahoe with the properly rated rear/front diff, will do a fine job. I had my diff ratio changed and it pulled very well with no issues. I am sure you can find one with a tow package but check on the rear end ratio before you pull the trigger on it. It is very important for towing. Also, the size of the Tahoe or whatever you look it is important in towing that you don't get a tow vehicle that is so small or narrow that you can't see around the trailer that you are towing. Good luck, Curly

RE: Escalade/Denali or Suburban 2500

From what I remember there is a tag on the rear diff that you can use to find out what the ratio is on it. Could be a code on the tag in the door or you could find it possibly through the VIN. Curly

RE: Escalade/Denali or Suburban 2500

Whatever you do make sure it has the best rear end gear ratio you can get. Most of those trucks have 3:23 gears which suck for towing. I would find something with at least 3:73 gears to make things tow better. The rear end ratio will kill you if not. Had a Tahoe years ago that had a 3:23 and I burned up the rear end as well as had very poor towing performance. Curly

RE: Truly towable with 1/2 ton?

Even some 3/4 ton trucks pulling a "1/2" rated 5th wheel have their hands full in certain situations with that trailer. It may pull it on a flat road with a cooler ambient temperature but when you hit the mountains, the whole situation changes. The real world and the salesperson's/manufacturer world is certainly different. You may have the power for a while to pull a 5th wheel but I would say on long grades in the summer, the world changes as well as trying to stop the trailer going down a long grade. Be very cautious when you pull the trigger on both units. Been there, done that. Curly

RE: Tow Vehicle Brakes

GM is making long life pads now for their trucks. I had over 135,000 miles on the OEM pads on my 2007 2500HD when I sold it. I would look at the OEM pads. Curly

RE: Bed level of new trucks

After our trip to Colorado and Oregon this last summer, I was amazed to see how many "Nose High" fifth wheel trailers were on the road, including me. It makes no sense that you can't find a newer 3/4 ton truck that has not been raised by the factory. I wish I had my 2007 2500HD back. Curly
