RE: My Chevrolet Express van Class B- camper

HI Mike, Nice camp and great photos,I always enjoy your adventures, nice to see you getting out and enjoying your retirement. We normally do our camping from March to mid May than mid Sept to Nov. With the van we will start doing some camping in the winter when the weather takes a break and we have the camping to ourselves.

RE: Winnemucca to Klamath Falls on 140

Thanks to all of you. I hadn't thought about fuel so I appreciate the reminder. We're good for 300 miles on a tank but I'll make it a point to top off at Denio and Lakeview. We have been that way two times and one time they were out of gas at Denio but we had enough to make it to Winnemucca, I wouldn't trust that they will have gas at Denio. This was 4 years ago so fill up in Winnemucca and you will make it to Lakeview.

RE: Reno, NV to Medford, OR

Middle of next week I plan to do a leg of a longer trip involving Reno to Medford. Was going to go up to Susanville, then take 44 to Old Station then 89 to I-5. BUT, I just found out online that there is a fire near Susanville which is causing the closure of 44. So if 44 is still closed the day I travel this leg, I'm thinking of an alternate route...for which I would like comments. How about 395 north (including Standish cutoff to avoid Susanville) to Alturas, then 299 west to 139 (39 in Oregon), then take Hwy 140 west over to Medford. I actually think I did this route one year, but want additional confirmation that all roads included make up a good RV route. Or any other suggestions? That is a good two lane road and we have taken it many a times, in fact I like it way better than Susanville to I-5 Their is a nice rest area just before you get to Standish turn off. Update, their are two fires one near Canby,Ca. Hwy. 299 and one at Lava Beds NM. Hwy. 39 so you may need to take 80 to Sacramento,Ca. than I 5 to Medford as was posted after my first posting. What ever way you take get on line to check out the fires as they can start at anytime this time of the year. Here in Medford we will be 100 to 104 from Sunday to Tuesday than in the 90s Good luck with your trip and safe travels.

RE: My Chevrolet Express van Class B- camper

HI Mike, I see that you and the wife are out enjoying the camping life :) Your camp sites always look so neat and relaxing and I enjoy your photos too, do you have a lot of mosquitoes in South Dakota? here in Oregon we have billions up in the Cascades Mountains from June to Sept. so we don't go their until Sept.after a night or two of a freezing temps. I will be checking in to see what adventures you are up to next.

RE: My Chevrolet Express van Class B- camper

Mike, ......It's been 4 years since we were in South Dakota and hope to go back in a year or two. It has been longer than 4 years since I have been to Oregon. I think the last time was a couple of years after the Mt. St. Helens park was set up as I remember driving through it and taking slides of it for use in my earth science class that I taught. Hopefully when this pandemic thing is over with or contained I will start taking trips west again. Utah is one of my favorites because of the numerous national and state parks. Kodachrome Basin in one of my favorites. One night it was getting late and we had not found a campground, so we drove into Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park in Utah because they had one or two sites not taken. My wife and I thought we are never going to get any sleep here because every site had dune buggies that they raced around the sand dunes with. But when 10 o'clock quiet hours went into effect you could have heard a pin drop because all the dune buggies were put to bed for the night. Very nice experience. This Sunday we go on the next step in our quest to visit all the state recreation areas in our home state of South Dakota and camp in every one. We crossed two in the north western part of the state off our list last weekend (as you can see in my previous post) and this weekend will get two more in the southern part of the state. We usually take in the Black Hills Corvette Classic rally in Spearfish, SD this time of the year but this year for the first time in 49 years it has been cancelled due to Covid-19, so I guess we will do more camping. Hopefully they will plan for a really big rally next year which will be the 50th. Mike, looking forward to hearing and seeing the pictures of your next adventures. We are going to a State Park camping for the 4th but don't usually go on holidays but we are going to get the dog away from the fireworks as it really upsets her even with meds from her vet. We do most all our camping in the spring ,fall and winter time do to no mosquitoes and no crowds. Not all State, USFS. and BlM CGs are open here in Oregon ( do to Covid-19 ) so all the CGs that are open are all full. We also like Utah and been to their SP. and NP.and will go back when we can. Did you see my pictures that I posted at Looking for new boondocking / dispersed sites ?

RE: Looking for new boondocking / dispersed sites

Yeah, being able to just pull over and do whatever makes life so much easier. I should have never spoiled my wife with our first RV, a 37' motor-home 30 years ago. I'd love just toss a camper on my truck and take off and not worry about having a reservation somewhere. James, we have a 17' Casita trailer for 18 years and we love it and use it for longer trips and the van for towing it. The van is great for two or three days, this is the third conversion van for us and we love it for short trips. On our drive last week all the open campgrounds were full and it was nice to find a dispersed place to have lunch and take a hike.

Looking for new boondocking / dispersed sites

Took two different days and went to the National Forest to find some new dispersed sites, the NF. is less than a 1 hr. from home but has many miles of roads that lead to nice camping spots. We are lucky to live so close to so many lakes and streams and having the van is a great plus for day trips and camping in the forest. Here is a few pictures. https://i.imgur.com/mfEcEhll.jpg https://i.imgur.com/J8R1pRol.jpg https://i.imgur.com/ubx0Iiel.jpg https://i.imgur.com/lRJgtNNl.jpg

Mike, glad to see that you are getting out and camping and I like seeing pictures of places I haven't been too. I like the picture of your van at the gazebo. It's been 4 years since we were in South Dakota and hope to go back in a year or two.

RE: My Chevrolet Express van Class B- camper

..........We took the van out yesterday ( Thursday ) and went to check out some old campgrounds and some dispersed sites ( found some new dispersed sites )that will be great Spring and Fall places to camp at. What are dispersed sites? Mike, dispersed sites are places in the US.Forest or BLM land out west and are all most the same as boondock camping. You can only camp in certain places that the USFS & BLM OK the spot, we have lots of them in the western states. We may go check out some more places Friday and if we do I will take some pictures of the spots and post them.

RE: My Chevrolet Express van Class B- camper

I know a lot of people would not do what I with my van, but it is what I live and I enjoy modifying it and camping this way. This summer I sold our 23 foot trailer camper and now do all our camping in the DIY van. This summer due to Covid-19 we set a new goal to camp in all the South Dakota Game,Fish & Parks campgrounds that we have not camped in before. I just finished camping at Lake Poinsett Recreation Area. https://i.imgur.com/VVc2mYDl.jpg https://i.imgur.com/Qm1JF2vl.jpg They have many campsites for the water lovers! https://i.imgur.com/Zeomcuyl.jpg They have an interesting planter by the comfort station in Campground 2. https://i.imgur.com/ewmQbNWl.jpg I still take the time to make some morning campground coffee. I boil water in the black pot and pour it into my old fashioned "drip-o-lator." I can remember my aunt Rhea making coffee this way whenever we visited them, but she boiled the water on her stove. My parents made coffee by boiling water and coffee grounds on the stove in a pan. when it was done we poured off the coffee because the coffee grounds had settled to the bottom, but it seems there was always a "floater or two." Mike, I like seeing your new mods and like you I enjoy doing my own. Glad to see you getting out and enjoying your retirement and thanks for the camping reports and pictures. We took the van out yesterday ( Thursday ) and went to check out some old campgrounds and some dispersed sites ( found some new dispersed sites )that will be great Spring and Fall places to camp at.

RE: Sad state of national parks and public lands.

On our way to Lassen Volcanic National Park. On a national forest rest stop and vista point, wifey went to the rest room. But it was posted "Closed due to lack of funding." And down on these national forest roads are trucks barreling down with full loads of logged timbers on the national forest. It's not hard to do the math that one of those trucks can. pay for the maintenance of that entire rest stop and the rest rooms. Bigly sad! We have seen this around the PNW forest with some campgrounds closing early or no services at tourist areas that used to have them. AT Union Creek Oregon on the way to Crater Lake NP. the restrooms have not been clean up for a few years now, no trash cans so the trash goes on the ground. ( Thanks to the Rogue River NF. ) To take care of this problem I got a cargo van and converted it to a camper van so we have our potty with us all the time, and we use it to tow our trailer for longer trips.

Mike! Black 95 got a nice write up on the Chevy Forum on his home built camper van. They change the cover story so it's now gone.

RE: Opening of National Parks, Forests & State Parks

I think people are sick of this bogus covid scam. You can't believe the CDC or Dr F because they have been wrong so much of the last couple of months. Studies are already showing that continuous mask wearing doesn't keep out the virus but it does put the wearer at risk. People want to live their lives. Sick people, susceptible people, and scaredy cats need to stay home and not rag on the rest of us. Seriously? You want to volunteer to be a test subject so you'll have a first hand knowledge that it's really. a scam?:E I'm sure so many will give you a Darwin Award in turn. He need to go to NYC hospital and volunteer in the ICU ,CCU and the ER with out PPE as he thinks this is " BOGUS " MY wife took care of people in the CCU & ICU for 33 years and no doctors or nurses died some may have gotten sick but not many and this was doing the H1N1 ( Swine Flu ). Hope that his family doesn't gets this C19 because of his BS.

RE: My camper van

I have added a Renogy 5W 12V Portable Solar Panel Battery Maintainer Trickle Charger with Lighter Plug, Alligator Clips, and Battery Cables that came with it. click I hard wired it right to the battery with the plug, using the lighter plug would loose contact at times. Use the solar panel when the van is not being used, I take it down when using the van. solar panel upper left hand side of windshield https://i.imgur.com/ljDzz3cl.jpg Plug in under dash https://i.imgur.com/cH9nlaSl.jpg

RE: Still no Stimulus Payment

Still nothing here, neighbor likewise. No hurry, we have nowhere to spend it. News flash. Neighbor mentioned above just went online and it's marked to be mailed 5/8/2020. He is on SS with no other income and automatic deposit. So much for automatic payments at least in this case. You never know how you will get it ! as we are retired 12 & 7 years with SS & retirements are auto deposit but we got ours in the mail last week.
