RE: Newmar Sold

I think it was sold for a couple reasons. One top of the market so max price. Two is taxes. If they passed it down in the family there would be an inheritance tax. It would mean huge debt but selling you get to pay about half the tax now and structure it out to reduce it over time. Tiffin will be next I figure as they are the last big family owned company and the last time bob tiffin retired he had to come back.

RE: Thinking of a Mercedes Class C

The sprinter is an 11K chassis rating the e450 is 14.5k and the F550 that I have is 19.5. I get 10-11 not towing and 9-10 towing. I can change the oil and service is the same as many of the thousands ford pickups on the road. I can tow 12k too. I stayed away from the sprinter after seeing most were overloaded. I love having a diesel generator too.

RE: Sprinter Carrying Capacity

RE: Have you thought about downsizing?

Went from a 34 ft to 36 to 42 foot FORETRAVEL’s. Always had a small born free but sold the 24 foot and the 42 foot and got a 29 foot class c on a f500. I get 11-12 mpg am 19500 gvw and not overloaded. The sprinters are tough that way. We sometimes tow but mst if the times do not. So went from 2 slide 42 foot to 20 foot c with no slides and lived it. I covered 370k miles in my FORETRAVEL’s over 17 years of ownership. It is slight less comfortable but so much better. I have owned 6 RVs now and thus one is perfect.

RE: Whats the difference in Majestic Class C's?

I liked the construction of a born free. bumpy Apparently, not enough other people did - or at least they weren't willing to pay the price for that construction. Actually the owner died from cancer and hedge fund bought them and then decided to close up when they were not hitting a much higher target ROI then they wanted. They sold off the company that was making money in pieces.

RE: Best Used Class C's? Rank your top five.

I have had three Born Free units since 2006. Only thing done is new front tires on my current one. One ford recall on my first one. If you can find one on the f550 you will have a huge grin and never get rid of it till it wears out.

RE: Cammpground Rant

One of the beauties of a motorhome is that we are self contained and for a night or two we can use a rest area or a walmart on our trip. I have stayed at them when traveling but also one time when I just went out for the weekend and could not find a campground. We toured in our 24 foot class C then. I also hav e used this in my bigger Foretravels the same way.

RE: Rv's are the new housing.

Hmmm, My problem is with Property taxes. in Texas we have the 3rd highest property tax rates in the nation. Yup, Texas keeps advertising:"Come to Texas, where housing is cheap," and I laugh. Yeah you may be able to buy a home for 200K which in Cali could run you 800K to 1M+ as in NYC. But, what is not advertised is that you Property taxes go up between .5% to 1% (i'm being nice) per yr. So on a 200k house you start out paing 8000+ a yr in property taxes. We're paying 14K right now. But out of principle we don't see why we should. To us it's outrageous. Just imagine all those folks that live in homes that were Passed down to them from generation to generation, what do you tell them? "sorry, Too bad." "Your family didn't leave you enough money to pay for taxes in the future? well you gotta sell and git." As a retired vet, that's definitely NOT what I fought for. But you have no income tax and that is much more your property tax.
