Switching Refigerator Modes?

I’m usually at campgrounds that have electrical hookups (at least), running the refrigerator on AC. When traveling I normally use DC. I may soon spend some time at a park without electric, so I plan on mostly using the propane option, which I haven’t previously needed (it works). However, the generator rules are pretty liberal, and if I need the air conditioner I’d be using the generator for a significant part of the day/evening. Is it worth it to switch the refrigerator to AC if the generator is in use, or do you lose cooling efficiency by stopping & starting so that it’s better to run on propane continuously? Want to keep my beverages cold!

RE: Roadtrek has new owner

A bit more here: The company intends to scale back production and occupy just one of the four manufacturing plants operated by Erwin Hymer Group, with plans to hire an estimated 100 employees once production resumes, then expand to as many as 200 within a year to 18 months. It is still in talks with the landlord, so Reuer did not want to disclose the location. The CEO also said the company will honour all Roadtrek warranties for vehicles sold prior to the receivership, which was a concern among consumers, and that it expects to be able to produce 1,000 vehicles per year. Sounds like they’re starting small, but honoring warranties could be a big help to recent buyers.

RE: Half-price camping for seniors in Maryland State Parks.

I’ve mentioned the Maryland Golden Age Pass several times, noting that its available to non-residents, although not in a dedicated thread. It’s a far better deal than my own state gives me, and the best treatment for out-of-staters I’ve come across. Use it once, and it’s more than paid for itself. Some pretty good State Parks, too. If you’re in the Mid-Atlantic region, or visit even sporadically, it’s a no-brainer.

RE: Snowbird Report Card

Would you mind saying where you stayed? The Nats are my team and I’d like to do that next year John Prince Park. It’s a County Park in southern West Palm Beach. The Ballpark at the Palm Beaches is in the northern part, so it’s about a 35-40 min drive on city streets, and potentially a bit quicker via I-95, which I usually avoid. It’s a large park with over 300 sites, with lots of snowbirds there for extended stays. The lakefront sites have a 14 day limit, so I reserve early as soon the 90-day window opens. The interior sites that allow longer stays start to open up in early & mid-March as the snowbirds head home. Those sites aren’t quite as nice - more packed together - but not bad once the park starts to empty out, and I was able to get a campsite with no trouble after I used up my 14-days lakefront. It’s not a resort by any means, just a well-run county park, but it was easily the best value I found in the area. I believe I paid about $30 per day, including all the taxes. Here’s the John Prince Park website, as well as its listing at RV Campground Reviews. I recommend both the campground and ballpark. Hope you get to make the trip. EDIT: One complication I forgot. Due to some problems with the electrical system, many of the lakefront water & electric sites were limited to 20 foot RVs this year. I’m in a Class B, so I wasn’t affected. Don’t know if they are going to address the electrical system before next year, but they do have some full hookup lakefront sites that weren’t subject to the 20 foot limit. Better check with the park as to what is available and then make a reservation as soon as the reservation window opens.

RE: Snowbird Report Card

Might not qualify as a Snowbird, but I did spend almost all of March in West Palm Beach, FL for the Washington Nationals Spring Training. Only needed to use the heat pump or furnace on 2 nights, and daytime highs were mostly 75-85°, with no games rained out! Can’t complain a bit.

RE: state park and federal park amenities

As others have noted, it depends on where you are looking, but my experience doesn’t suggest that 99% of the State Parks don’t have water at campsites. Water & electric is fairly common, although certainly not universal. County or city parks are another option with considerable variety that you might want to check. However, if camping at electric-only sites is going to be a large part of your camping experience, you might want to purchase a unit that won’t be that hard to take to the dump station or for a water refill, and consider whether using the campground showers woould be an acceptable trade-off for fewer water refill trips.

RE: Trouble at Hymer?

The Roadtrek website is back online, with no apparent mention of their current difficulties. Don’t know if it means anything about the company’s future prospects, but good news for anyone needing a manual, specifications, or other info.

RE: Orlando outside of Disney

Any suggestions with really nice beaches we could play on for 2 days at the end of our vacation. Jetty Park in Cape Canaveral is pretty nice. Walk out the campground gates and across a small parking lot and you’re on the beach. It abuts a shipping channel that cruise ships, and sometimes submarines, go in & out of. The Kennedy Space Center is on the other side of that shipping channel, so it’s also a good spot for viewing rocket launches, if any are scheduled. Kathryn Abbey Hannah Park in Jacksonville is another option.
