RE: SHANK question

I have a 23ft trailer and I recently went from a GMC Yukon to a Ford F150/Raptor. The shank and old hitch works fine after some adjustments, but I noticed today I can't open the tailgate without it hitting my tongue jack. The fix would be to go from a 12 inch shank to a 18 inch shank. Not a huge difference, but was curious if others have done this and does it compromise ride, etc.? I've always had motorhomes and 5th wheels so I'm sorry for the NEWB question and thanks in advance for your thoughts. Here is a picture of it with the 12 inch and it rides great. It might not tow as nice because now the trailer is another 6" further from the truck's rear axle. I have always had that problem too so I just lived with it and it never bothered me. I always wanted to get the trailer tongue as close to the rear axle as possible for towing stability. Try it if it doesn't tow as nice you will only be out the price of the shank. Rob A longer Shank will mess with the Tongue Weight. I had that problem with my last trailer and vehicle. I lived with it. I don't like the idea of making towing and backing up a little different. Why make it more difficult? My simple hack was to put things in my F-150 before I hitched up, and to unload my truck after I unhitch.

RE: Thoughts on the 'need' factor of a main line surge protector

Half dozen years ago my buddy, Wayne, questioned the need when I bought a surge protector. About 3 weeks later in an electrical storm, my buddy's camper got a over load when lightening struck something in the state park. The camper didn't burn, but every circuit and appliance was fried. Wayne bought another camper, and a quality surge protector. A quality surge protector is a cheap investment in protection.

There are some really great things about a 5r, but we went the other route for our last 3 trailers. Travel Trailers. MY Cons against a 5r: We prefer trailers all on one level I have two bad knees and a bad back. Need Low steps... My wife has bad knees. When we camp it's just the 2 of us. I actually use the bed of my truck, so a 5th wheel is in the way. We don't have to carry everything we own when we go camping. My current camper is 20'. It fits in every camp ground. We have spent years simplifying our camping, so we don't generally carry things we don't need. AND... Being retired we prefer to camp during the middle of the week. When I show up on Mondays the campgrounds have lots of empty spaces. Camp grounds like to see people leave on Fridays so they can fill up on weekends. Lastly towing a 20' is a breeze.

When manufacturers calculate "max towing capacity", they do it without aftermarket accessories, passengers, or cargo. They also advertised that max tow weight with two key words, often missed by consumers. Those words are "UP TO". RV manufacturers are also guilty of advertising misleading information. They advertise trailers with their unloaded (dry) weights, along with some low hitch / tongue weights. Some of those hitch / tongue weights don't include a battery or propane, both of which add weight directly onto the tongue. They also don't tell you, tongue weight is not a constant number. It goes up and down during every trip. Your estimate of 500 lbs for stuff loaded in the trailer, could be a bit on the low side. Just filling a 30 gallon fresh water tank, adds 240 lbs. If you got in a situation where you had to tow with full black / grey tanks, you would have 500+ lbs right there. The average load (dishes, flatware, pots and pans, bedding, camp chairs, BBQ equipment, flashlights, batteries, groceries, water, etc) is about 1000 lbs. Average tongue weight runs 12 -13 percent of loaded trailer weight. Some trailers, based on their floor plan, or how you load it, can be a little higher. On your tire / loading sticker (on drivers door jamb), there is a number for "max occupant / cargo weight" (AKA payload). That is the truck's capacity to carry everything and everybody you put into, or onto the truck. The weight of added hitch equipment and trailer tongue weight are counted as cargo weight, on the truck. Any aftermarket accessories, you may have added to the truck, are counted as cargo weight. With these numbers and percentages, you can calculate how that trailer matches up with your truck. Take your payload number and subtract 100 lbs for hitch equipment, subtract you family weight, subtract aftermarket accessory weight (if you have any), and subtract any cargo that you would be carrying in the truck. Whatever is left over, is payload available for carrying tongue weight. If you divide that available payload by .13, that will give you a ball park number of what loaded trailer weight would put your truck at it's max capacity. Give yourself some wiggle room. Allow for those tongue weight fluctuations and the possible unexpected guest or cargo. The closer you are to going over weight, the more unpleasant your towing will be. You're looking at a trailer that will be close to 6000 lbs when it is ready to camp. Does it fit with your set up, only you can make that call. Do some of these calculations, and see where it falls. Not only manufactures lie about weights, but car/truck salesmen are the worst. Too many will tell you with a straight face that what they are selling will tow the camper. However there is a really big difference between calling, making a trailer roll, and towing with it. Then there is the issue of stopping the trailer that is too heavy. Lastly... Think about trying to tow in Mountains. Years ago I was where you are now... I 'Towed' my camper to the Smokey Mountains. Going North from Chattanooga, Tn. My under powered tow vehicle was going 65 mph when I started up the first long hill. I was going less than 20 mph before I got to the top... When I got home from that trip, I traded trucks. Being under powered and over loaded is dangerous for you, your family and everybody else on the highway.

RE: Xchocks question

X chocks are nice but I’d use wheel chocks also. Not plastic...Hard, heavy rubber. Five bucks each a Harbor Freight on sale Using both Wheel chocks and X Chocks is a good investment in your camper. Maybe that sounds like a belt and suspenders thing, but both types work together to make your camper more stable.

RE: which size drinking water hose?

I replaced the plumbing in my 75 Prowler... Frozen and busted... Lowered the cost of purchase. I put in 1/2" water lines and a quality pressure reducer at the hydrant. What difference does it make? Not a lot, my inside hydrants all neck down to 3/8". I did have the peace of mind that the previous plumbing was gone, and My plumbing did not leak. Last Fall, I made dang sure I did everything when I winterized my trailer. I blew out the lines, then filled them with the Pink stuff. It will take a couple minutes to drain all the lines and run clean water thru them before I take it out this Spring. I'm fixing to have a total knee replacement in March, so my camping will come a little later, after I've done a bunch of rehab.

Bunkhouse, why? My first and current TT has bunks. HAD to get them for the grandkids. Two seasons later, they have NEVER went on a trip with us. We have camped with our daughter's family several times, they have their own TT, and THEN we get a grandkid or two sleep over with us occasionally. I added a removable clothes rod to the bottom bunk to make it more useful. The upper bunk is a **** catcher. Love my grandkids but 90% of the time the bunks are a waste. I can strap up the lower bunk and use it as a storage area using the factory outside access door. We could have had a smaller TT or more living space for my wife and I if bunks weren't a key factor. I like my TT a lot but without the bunks as a must, so many more options would have been considered. Sounds like something I would have written when I owned a 28' BH. I had a lot of wasted space, because 99% of the time it was only my wife and I. These days when we camp, it's always just the two of us. When I down sized I dropped from 30' to 20'. I love the smaller trailer, and it will fit in every space, even in old State Park Camp Grounds. Smaller trailers are easier to tow, and require less truck for towing.

RAM 1500 4X4 CREW ST 5'7" BOX your payload is 1840.. Pretty good. Is it just you and spouse in truck? 800 lb TW you may be up over 1000 lbs when loaded. Add more people to truck and youll be up there at limits. Thing with the rams I hear is the coil suspension is not that good.. May need to beef it up with sumo springs or air bags as people on this site suggest. Jayco cargo CCC is 1200. Not alot IMO. Grand design youll get a bit more 1600 and a 600 lb tongue weight.But pay the price for the name.. Better quality? I fixed all the stuff myself because I didnt want the RV tied up at the dealer for months as they are always swamped.. Only if there was something major would I bring it back. I bought the RV from a dealer that was 4 hours away. Its where I got a fantastic price. All my local dealers were 4000 more...those dealers were 1.5 hours away. Very good thing to know... Warranty work can run a month or more. I paid a small shop to do part of my work, it is about 1.5 miles from my house. I left it with them on a Monday and picked it up on Thursday. Lots of little things I did myself. Still do.

RE: It has been 6 yrs since we sold our TT--back looking again!

So our youngest just graduated HS, so we are looking at TT's that are 3500 or less. What we're looking for preferably, is a dinette on one end, bed on the other in case the MIL wants to come along. I've been to two RV shows in the last month and was able to eliminate the $30k Intech Horizon and Little Guy Max as they are just too cramped and it's a no to wetbaths. If we were to spend 30k, we'd have to drive to New York from NC to get my favorite, the Holiday House 18RB. Here's my list so far for TT's under 20k, under 3500 lbs, fibeglass construction. Keystone Bullet Crossfire 1900RD, Gulfstream Vintage Cruiser 19ERD, and the Apex Nano 191RBS. They all have their pluses and minuses. The Vintage Cruiser is the lightest at 3090#. The Apex Nano is the least expensive at $16500 and has the nicer fiberglass/plastic end cap with aluminum wheels. I have not been able to walk through and put my hands on the Gulfstream. :) I hope to be a contributing member here again, I have done a lot of video watching and learning. We can't wait to go glamping! If you held out 6 years, you resisted twice as long as we did. In year 3... I settled on restoring a 20' 1975 Prowler. (I didn't go for fancy, just the features we wanted.) BTW: Rehabbing is a young mans game. I took way too many Tylenol while I was doing the work... NEVER AGAIN. I'm getting too long in the tooth to rehab another. Good luck finding something that meets your needs.

Bass Pro and cabelas's routinely have the turkey burner and pot on sale for around $49. I use mine for everything from fish fries to large wok for stir fry veggies. I have a single burner and I have a double burner. The single burner gets the most use. It has gone camping and hunting with me for years. Low Country Boils, Craw Fish Boils, and mine sees extra duty cooking with a Discada. I first saw immigrants cooking with them in the Arizona Desert. I came home and got a welder buddy to make me one out of a 22" Plow Disc. He welded the Hole together, and welded on Horse Shoes for handles. Now people are selling those things. About $49 at Academy Sports.

go to walmart and get the cheapest one that fits. It will work for the next ten years... Last year I put a small Walmart TV in my 1975 Prowler. I think I bought a larger Walmart TV when the TV in our bedroom gave up the ghost. AND... I think I bought a Walmart TV when I had a Grey Wolf. No complaints... Don't skimp on your Coaxial cables, they really do make a difference in your picture.

RE: Looking for a propane setup for seafood boil cooking

I built my own burner. I made my legs about 10" high. I have various skillets, D.Os. and some large pots I use on mine. I made my burner stand short enough to use on campground wooden picnic tables. I drop it down to a bench if I'm using a large pot for a Low Country Boil. BTW: I'm partial to using Zatarans for my boils.

RE: Where to park on 2 day travel from park to park

Another difference maker is what days of the week are you traveling. RV parks that are full on Fri-Sat-Sun. are not half full during the week. My wife calls ahead to locations near the mid point of my drive, and makes easy reservations. Over night reservations are pretty easy to get.

A number of years ago I tried to tow in the Smokeies. Same weak motor. Unfortunately living in Alabama I had to tow thru Chattanooga. Just the other side of Chattanooga, the Interstate goes up a long grade... I started up that grade with a running start. I was going 65 at the bottom. Before I got to the crest, I was going less than 20 mph and folks were passing me blowing their horns and shooting us the Bird. The new gen 5.3 engine the OP has with 355 hp and 383 torque 6 or a 8 speed tranny isn't the same 5.3 weak motor you had. The wifes previous '06 1500 5.3 with 3.73 gears was a gutless wonder. However the new gen 5.3 from 2014 on up towing duties out performs the older 5.3 engines. Correct... My 5.3 was a under powered 5.3. My truck was a great Grocery Get-er, terrible for towing. When I traded I got a 6.4 Twin Turbo Ford Diesel. That truck had been tricked our and was a fantastic tow machine. I used it to tow a 30' trailer across the Rockies. Never a problem, except the price of Diesel.

Thanks everyone, I was expecting it was going to come up short. What about a 5.7 crew cab tundra with 9800 lbs towing capacity? Will it handle the grades going up and down with no trouble with the same 5000lb TT? No white knuckles? The Tundra is enough truck to tackle the grades easily.

I have a 2017 Silverado with max towing of 6100lbs, it is a 5.3 w/ 3.08. My TT is 5000 lbs dry. My Truck feels strong enough on flat land but I've never taken it anywhere with a real grade. RE: Question on inner bearing grease seals

Agreed on the quality for a trailer that is going to dunk the warm bearings under water. If your trailer has the bearing buddy caps then the more expensive seals are hopefully double lip seals which are required. The cheaper seal might be only a single lip seal which will leak with the bearing buddy system. I even use the Bearing Buddy caps even on my Utility trailer. I have towed my last trailer across a couple of shallow creeks, and thru many places of standing water. I use Bearing Buddies on all trailers.

No trailer brakes yet, but installing them will be on the to-do list at some point... I think technically I'm required to have them in NC, but I don't plan to be driving it around often, and I doubt officers are going to know that particular nuance and look for that? Hopefully that's not a bad assumption. But I fully intend to have a vehicle that can handle the weight comfortably, instead. Goal is to live in it while parked, mostly. But I want to be able to, if my life changes and I decide to, tow it comfortably longer distances and regularly, as well, without it being a problem. Thing is, as I do plan to have it parked mostly, I also want the vehicle to get as good gas-mileage when not towing as possible. Also, it being reliable is top-tier important. Dealing with car trouble sucks. I'm mechanically competent, but I have better things to do with my life. On top of that, though, money is tight. So it needs to be cheap. I know, asking for a lot. So, did a ton of research. Had previously posted thinking I had decided on a ford ranger. The v6 4.0L is pretty reliable, but... thing is, it doesn't get any better mpg than the f150 with the little 4.2 v6 produced from '97 to '04 and '04 to '08. If you baby it, people pull off 20+ mpg in those f150's. More space, and better towing experience. That particular engine, if you avoid the 97/98 years, is also basically _the_ most reliable engine in a truck ever produced, according to consumer reports, by an american manufacturer---in particular, the 04-08, though there were some issues with '04/'05 (non-engine stuff, but still), so 06/07/08. So I set my sights on that one. If I go with that, I'd really prefer some back seats--extra lockable storage space, and the ability to drive around some more people, would be _really_ nice. I also would prefer a short bed--easier for daily driving, parking, etc. The earlier models, I can find ones worth considering. 99-03/04 (they made the old body style officially until '03, but '04 they had some lying around and called them 'heritage' models, relatively cheap, that have crew cabs, that are in my price range (4k or under, basically). I see some 06/07/08 newer body styles in that range sometimes, but they're usually basic work models, single cab, long bed, usually with a lot of miles and at the top of my price range. So that's a dilemma. Then, now at the last minute, I've started considering 4runners. Normally they're just too expensive, cult following and all, but I found one that's an '01 that had a replaced engine, and the new engine has 132k on it supposedly. It's going for a reasonable price. Those get at least as good mpg as the f150, probably at least a few mpg better. They won't tow quite as nice, but they do have a 5k tow limit. It is an SUV and nicer around town. There's also an '08 xterra with some body damage (I don't care at all, whatever makes it cheaper and doesn't make it less reliable), but 129k miles, locally, going for just under 3k. That's tempting. Also can tow 5k, also gets about 20mpg hwy epa. newer though. But no tow package, I think, so I'd probably have to get a hitch installed and a transmission cooler... Last thing about a truck, though--I could load a little street legal dirtbike or small motorcycle or scooter or something in there. That would mean I could drive that around and get super-optimal mpg when parked... Any thoughts from the collective? I've been digesting all the variables for about a month now, feel like my head is going to explode. Final variable: need to buy FAST, have to drive 700 miles to go pick up the trailer ASAP, and everyone starts getting their tax returns feb 1 and getting used vehicles becomes hard. Good looking Vintage.
