RE: Vancouver Island

Just saw this now. It was great to meet you and Hazel a few years ago and wish you all the best for 2022. BTW, we had a rare White Christmas and an even heavier snowfall a few days ago. It's been 25 years since we had snow on the ground for this long!

RE: Solar flare -- more auroral activity?

It arrived really late, 5am PDST, and was seen low on the horizon from the north end of the Island. This will be the last time I do an aurora warning post on Facebook! :o

RE: Medicare

We get quite a few US channels, and often they just leave the US commercials in. I've noticed all these Medicare ads. Maybe someone can explain why they advertise it as I thought it was a government programme, like Universal Healthcare for old folks. Why advertise?

RE: StrangeThings

I remember a few years ago when a guy was trying to get a personilised plate for his vehicle. He wrote his requested plate in, but in the '2nd choice' area he wrote 'NO PLATE', as if he couldn't get want he wanted, he didn't want any plate. Sure enough, in a few weeks a packaged arrived with the 'No Plate ' plate , but in the meantime he had received dozens of parking tickets, as vehicles illegally parked with no plates, were written up as such, but somehow they now all found their way on to his file! can't quite remember how it ended up, but I think that he wanted to keep the plate and wanted the DMV to change their billing system!

RE: Alaska Sept 2022

Yes, part of it is legal requirement, but those are two very delightful destinations. Would hate to see them removed from the itineraries. Thanks Wolfe! I hope a lot more think like that!:)

RE: Alaska Sept 2022

I think everyone here is wondering how many cruise ships will make a stop in Canada if they don't have to!

RE: Alaska Sept 2022

Yes, I think you may be correct. Next year I think our cruise related industry may be SOOL , as they probably will repeal that Jones Act . It would appear to be very outdated anyway.

RE: Alaska Sept 2022

Why are there so few cruise ships? They always could not sail directly from one US port to another as they are nearly all foreign registered. This is why they had to stop at a Canadian port like Vancouver Victoria or occasionally Nanaimo. As Canada banned all cruise ship visits, the above regulation was 'temporarily' suspended, allowing the cruise ships to sail between two US ports. Places like here in Victoria are really worried that this suspension will be permanent, The cruise ships are great money generators!

RE: Atlanta Explained

I always thought that Atlanta was in the 'South' , but then I looked at this site which can compare the climate of two place. I compared Atlanta to where I live in the 'Great White North' and found that we do get a little bit more snow, but Atlanta does get a little colder! Link to WeatherSpark

RE: Touring British Columbia

Spend some time in the Rocky Mountains which straddle the BC/Alberta border. The Icefields Parkway between Banff and Jasper is one of the most scenic drives in the world. The Okanagan Valley in the middle of the Southern part of the province is a semi arid, scenic valley that is full of orchards, Lakes and vineyards. Vancouver is a big, bustling, multicultural city, with a dramatic location surrounded by ocean with a high mountain backdrop. Vancouver Island has the lovely old, colonial. harbour city of Victoria with its Butchart Gardens, Empress Hotel, wonderful museum, parliament buildings and whale watching. Farther up the Island are massive forests, huge trees and the stunning and wild West Coast resorts of Tofino and Ucluelet . Just a few, there are MANY more!

RE: Possible Canada boarder opening mid August

I posted that link because it says quite clearly that the US is NOT opening the border on Aug 9th.

RE: Possible Canada boarder opening mid August

People here are complaining that we have opened up the border to Americans, but the US is not yet reciprocated to allow Canadians to travel south. However, Canada has over 80% of its over 12 yr vaccinated, while the US is only at 56%! We are the ones that are wrong! Are we nuts! It seems so backwards! What's going on?

RE: Solar storm -- possbile aurora?

It has arrived , but right now 10am PDST its most southerly point overhead is just touching the US at around Lake of the Woods MN and low on the horizon further south. Whether that will hold until it gets dark is another matter ! Link

RE: Canada sizzling!

The latest news is that the village of Lytton has been evacuated because of fires that have broken out all over town. Talk about out of the frying pan and into the fire! This is going to be a terrible fire season! We live right on the coast and we've had no rain for about three weeks!

RE: Canada sizzling!

Our heat wave has now peaked and the final result in the village of Lytton was 49.6c , which is 121F ! Again, this is Canada and June!

RE: Canada sizzling!

I don't normally get into the climate change thing much especially when dealing with a very hot or cold day, but when Canada achieves its highest ever temp, 46.6C 116F in JUNE, it makes you think! This is a month earlier than our average hottest day of the year . If this had happened towards the end of July, that figure could have been 121F ! And remember too that these are official temps, not what someone recorded with his home thermometer on the deck! I see that that temp in Lytton BC, the north end of the Fraser Canyon, was hotter than Phoenix!

RE: Canada sizzling!

46C thats not unusaly for Kamloops You have to distinguish between the temp that guys get from their sundeck thermometers and an 'Official Temp'. Kamloops has never been at 46C as the all time high for all of Canada is 45C. To get an unofficial accurate temp, you have to have an 'approved' thermometer in the correct white painted ventilated shelter, at the correct height above the ground, which has to be typical natural vegetation. In addition, there is a complex formula on on how high and distant nearby objects can be, trees buildings etc. You can never make a temp lower, but many things can make the temp higher.
