RE: alaska 2021 ???

Yes, our system is a bit different to yours. The other thing I found interesting is that once the Lieutenant Governor (Leftenant!) agrees to the election, the Premier ( of BC) is no longer the Premier and has to be just called the Leader of the XXX party. He is still in charge though. The LG is the Queen's representative in BC. The Governor General is in Ottawa and is the rep for all of Canada. PM me if you want to know more, in case the Powers that be think it's too political.

RE: alaska 2021 ???

I'd hate to guess when that border will open. Something rather alarming has just happened here in BC. We are due to have an election next October as we are on a four year cycle. However, the government, because it is able to, has called for an early election a year earlier, this October. The reason given? The pandemic could be WORSE next year, so we'll do it now! This is NOT a political post! :)

RE: Out the door....

Great pictures Gary, wow if your brakes were smoking , you weren't that far from losing them! Brake fluids these days have a higher boiling point.

RE: 4 maybe 5 weeks....

Probably spend the winter near Campbell River. Might run into you somewhere. I hope you have a reservation! Many have planned to come to the Island as they can't winter down south.

RE: Chicken Killers

Funny this as our local FB page is full of recent stories of Mink killing chickens around here. I had no idea that we had them around here. The big problem is that as they are a fur bearing animal, only a licensed trapper can trap them! The only thing a non trapper can do is to catch one 'in the act' and kill it right away! Must be some weird left over law from when this was the frontier!

RE: Travel into Canada

Why are large cans of bear pepper spray allowed into Canada but small cans of the same stuff, or stuff with the same effect, not allowed. (Do I understand that right?). The large cans are intended for use against bears. The small containers that you can hide in your purse or pocket are intended for use against people. I think!

RE: US/Canada border still closed.

When we see news stories of places in the US where they actually have signs up saying that you CANNOT enter wearing a mask, makes me think that it will be a while before the border is opened!

RE: Longer closure gathering momentum...

"You're more likely to die from it here than there. 2 to 1. Per capita, of course. Just open the **** border." I think you have that backwards, if you think that you are more likely to die from Covid in Canada than in the US! Their per capita deaths per 1m is 397 and Canada is 229! Lower is good!

RE: Canada border crossing

Just heard on our news that the border closure will be extended to at least June 21.

RE: Should we be going?

I see that in Spain this morning they are saying no more that ONE person at a time in any car, along with other restrictions. Wow!

RE: Spring flowers popping up today

Meanwhile up here in the Great White North, our crocuses are just about done, Daffs are out and the tulips are almost out. Cherry Blossom is ankle deep in some places and we may have to mow out lawn for the second time this year!

RE: Has anyone been to S. Africa?

We haven't but Wife's brother & partner went about 5-6 years ago and loved it. They would have gone first class, as they always do, and had no problems, but am not sure if they'd go again because of the deteriorating safety factor? I'll ask him next time I see him, as I think he knows someone there.

RE: Just a thought tonight

As a Canadian, I am often confused with what is going on SOB. Questions pop up from time to time on how your system works, and often to research it online doesn't always work. It's a pity that general NON biased discussions could not take place, in which there is no indication on which 'side of the fence; the writer is on. I've tried these in the past, but soon someone will join in and make their opinion known, and the thread is closed. Other times, and very disappointingly, the thread is closed right away, with 'no politics' allowed.

RE: Summer 2020 road trip - suggestions

Don't forget to have the correct documentation to cross to the Canadian side. There is a lot more to do on that side and the view of the Falls is much better. Nearly every photo you see of the Falls has been taken from the Canadian side.

RE: My daily trip to Walmart

I wouldn't worry about showing my receipt, unless of course I nicked something now and again! In fact, I would prefer that they all checked, as it would keep the pilfering down, and give the stores more of a chance to keep the prices down.

RE: WA 20 or US 2 across the Cascades summer 2020?

If you do 20, make sure you take a look at the viewpoint by the Liberty Bell Mountain.

RE: Remembrance Day

We just came back from the service at our local village cenotaph. Short military parade, Oh Canada, Flanders Fields poem, WW2 flypast, Last Post, a full two minutes silence, the lament, The Rouse? Laying of about twenty wreaths, God Save the Queen. As invited, most left their poppies an the cenotaph. Very moving.
