RE: Expired RV permit

As far as I know you do not need to cancela 10 year permit, so they would just issue you a new one. If it were a 180 day with a deposit, you would simply lose your deposit and they would cancel it at the border. Totally incorrect. If you do not cancel your TIP they will not issue a new one for that vehicle.

RE: Travel insurance for Canadians

Good point. Many travelers overlook this issue and are caught completely unaware when their claim is denied. The Cdn Gov't has issued an "Avoid non-essential Travel" warning for most of Sonora, Sinaloa and Nayarit https://travel.gc.ca/destinations/mexico. The Manulife policy (obtained through Costco) states that it does not cover "any medical condition you suffer or contract when an official travel advisory issued by the Canadian government states, "Avoid all non-essential travel" or "Avoid all travel" regarding the country, region or city of your destination, before your effective date." It then states that "This exclusion does not apply to claims for an emergency or a medical condition unrelated to the travel advisory." Typically this is Insurance Company doublespeak to confuse travelers. Remember that the Number one rule for the Insurance Claims Adjuster: "Do anything you can to avoid paying a claim!". Everyone should have Emergency Medical Insurance, but read the policy very carefully and be sure you know what you are getting.

RE: where to stop for the night

Proud Canuck -- I have never camped in Canada, so forgive me if you think this is a weird question. Are there any provinces in Canada which would allow a person towing or driving an RV long distances to just pull into a rest area, truck stop, visitor's center, forest service road, etc to overnight rather than drive tired on the road without sleep? We have even asked managers' at Wal-Marts here in the US because it was late and given permission to overnight in their parking lot rather than risk an accident on the road. I have a few Canadian friends, and they are the type who would be compassionate and even allow me to overnight in their driveway if it were necessary. Overnight stops are much the same in Canada as in the US. Walmarts, Costco, Rest Stops etc are usually OK with you pulling in overnight, but exactly as in the US, some do and some don't. Hwy 93 from Lake Louise to Jasper as mentioned by Bobsyouruncle is a Parks Canada Hwy. It is owned and operated by Parks Canada, so their road....their rules.

RE: where to stop for the night

One place I have seen where there are places to stop is off Hwy 93 heading from Lake Louise towards Jasper. If you head north at the Sask Crossing turnoff there are a number of places where you can overnight including a few Government CGs. Not sure on their closing times though. A lot depends on how far you will go in 1 day too. Parks Canada Rangers will stop and ask you to move on if they find you overnighting anywhere but in a campground. All campgrounds north of Saskatchewan Crossing are already closed for the winter. At Jasper, the Wapiti campground is open till Oct 11.

RE: Where are you going to spend the winter?

Roads are in the best shape I have seen in 20 years. Lot of new asphalt everywhere. Lots of new gas stations too. I am driving to PV from the States. 15D in Sinoloa is TERRIBLE, big potholes everywhere. I shredded a brand new trailer tire yesterday. ????????????????
