RE: Fitting in Yellowstone Campgrounds...

1) I have not camped withing Yellowstone personally. We stayed at a USFS CG on Earthquake Lake during our visit Labor Day 2017. 2) I have several friends who have camped within Yellowstone in recent years - three in 2019. 3) There are two (really three) very different types of campgrounds within Yellowstone, and understanding the differences is important. The National Park Service operates seven smaller dry campgrounds within the park. Those vary from tight restrictions such as at Lewis Lake where size limits are very important due to the access roads to Mammoth which is very lax on 'size' limitations. As noted on the link above - Yellowstone National Park Lodges operates five campgrounds - four dry, and FHU Fishing Bridge. I've had friends in a 41' motorhome stay at Bay Bridge with a 17' long toad. Another friend with a 43' 5er stayed in Maidison, another friend with a 45' tag axle DP stayed in Grant Village. All three of these people TALKED to someone with Yellowstone NP Lodges reservations - and did so EARLY - 9 months to a year early. There are not many spaces which would fit their rigs, but the reservations team worked with them. Two of the folks had to adjust their dates to make sure they had a right sized spot. Canyon is supposed to be tight to get into in places. Not recommended for longer trailers or 5ers. One person I know was turned away at Fishing Bridge several years ago with a 38' 5er. A compromise was worked out so the 5er was put in the spot, but they had to park their pickup over at the Visitor Center/ Museum parking lot. Those are people I've personally talked with. Take it with a grain of salt. Driving through Madison, Grant, Bay Bridge and Canyon in Sept 2017 - I saw several large rigs/ 5ers - many bigger than yours in the first three. Some close to your size in Canyon. Many times it is not the camping spot which limits length, it is the trees which restrict turns and getting into a spot. The RV parks in West Yellowstone are excellent, and plenty to do in the afternoons/ evenings if you wish. But it is not a 'wilderness' Yellowstone camping experience. But most important - TALK to the people with YNP Lodges if you want reservations. I'm willing to go without reservations and TRY to get into Mammoth the next time I go there, hopefully 2021, but I'm willing to fall back to West Yellowstone and pay, and I'm going to go to Grand Tetons with reservations for Colter Bay. As far as the main roads, we took our rig from West Yellowstone through the park to exit toward Cody, WY. We took the mid-park cut near Canyon rather than doing the lower loop. The only 'tight' spot for the trailer/ traffic was passing Fishing Bridge, but we were able to stop alongside the road and go across the street for a bite of lunch. NOTHING MOVES FAST traffic wise within Yellowstone. Prepare to avg 20-25 mph while touring the park and traveling from place to palce. Well said and my thoughts exactly. Having a 35'8" FW, the only campground within Yellowstone that we would attempt is Mammoth. We've driven through them all and it's the turns that we would not attempt even though we've seem some pretty big ones in there. When we go, we stay at Baker's Hole FS CG, 2 miles north of West Yellowstone. Since it's first come first served, we'll talk to the host on what sites are expected to be available, nab a site at Grizzly RV in WY, then drive over the Baker's Hole the next morning to get a site. It's worked for us every time. I know the OP didn't ask for this information, but more is less. If we didn't share this information and he had problems, he'd wonder why we didn't say something. No sarcasm intended.

RE: RMNP Extends Campground Closure

We too had reservations for the Memorial Day weekend in the Sawtooth National Rec in Idaho through Recreation.gov and we just got the notice and refund emails yesterday. All CGs are closed in this area. For us, and most campers, social distancing is a natural so to me it doesn't make sense, but I understand and accept it. Boondocking or dispersed camping is allowed as I confirmed with the FS office, so we'll take our chances on finding a place.

RE: Pioneer Mountains Scenic Byway Montana

I'm the OP and we took that trip after asking here, in 2018. We thought it was an amazing, beautiful area. We camped at Boulder Creek CG on the north end. We came in through Wisdom and went out the same way, but drove the entire length of the byway. At one time the southern end was gravel, but it is now paved. There is a hair pin turn and climb at the southern end, but nothing too drastic, at least in our opinion. We felt that this was comparable to Yellowstone, but no crowds in September when we went. We were alone in the CG we stayed in. It was great! After leaving there we went to Lewis and Clark Caverns then returned and went to Bannack State Park - well worth it and we liked it much better than L&C Caverns State Park. This area is well worth the trip.

RE: Travel When Restrictions lifted

We've got reservations for a FS CG up in Stanley, ID for the Memorial Day weekend. So far they haven't been cancelled, so we're waiting. If they do cancel them, we'll go boondocking somewhere up there. We also have reservations for the July 4th holiday in the same area, but different FS CG. Problem with the location is that there have been numerous earthquakes and aftershocks in that area as early as this last Monday, April 20.

RE: Tent Camping Forum

The OP posted that back in December of 2019. He may or may not have gone due to the COVID-19 issues.

RE: Las Vegas to Grand Teton soon..

Sure does go thru Jackpot. We sometimes dry park at Bartons 93 Casino. Also use the RV park at Cactus Pete's Casino. When in Twin Falls we usually stay at Rock Creek County Park or the Filer Fairgrounds. It's been years since we've been through Jackpot but we used to dry camp for the night across the street that had a sign "Courtesy of Casino 93". Nice wide dirt spot and we were never alone. Always other RV'ers staying overnight.

RE: Las Vegas to Grand Teton soon..

Take route wguss recommended. From that direction you'll go through Star Valley, hit Alpine Junction and up through the Snake River canyon. That's 89 to 26. This route avoids Teton Pass which is not recommended for big RVs. Don't know what you are driving or towing, but go around instead through Alpine Junction.

RE: Extended warranty. What are your thoughts

We've purchased extended warranties for our Ford's. 2005 Freestyle - purchased ext warranty because of all the electronics. Took it in for an AC check. Turned out the compressor needed replaced and BTW, our transmission was failing. Both with ext warranty - $100, without the bill was a little over $4k. Purchased an extended warranty on our 2011 F350 Ford Diesel - a sensor had to be replaced, can't remember the name. $100 - without close to $1k. Just recently purchased a CPO - Certified Pre-Owned 2018 Escape. You can **** well bet that we purchased the extended warranty AND will renew on the F350 in June too. Diesels can be expensive for repair work and it will happen.

RE: CDC and the government may be loosening the lockdown

Put a layer of a HEPA vacuum cleaner bag in the mask you make. Rated to 3 microns. Will give additional protection if you can get a good seal around the face. Now that's a good idea. I thought about using some of that a/c or furnace filters that they sell. There's actually a YouTube video on this and how to make 4 masks out of one HEPA filter, duckbill style is bet according to the maker of the video who is in the health field.

RE: Hwy. 95 in Idaho

Agree. With the properly equipped tow vehicle you will not have any problems with Whitebird or Lewiston hill. The rest of the route is good two lane. Some areas with no to minimal shoulders, but that's about it. A lot of stops on the wide side of the road south of Riggins, for a break. Another climb north of Weiser, and a good rest area on that hill that you can get in and out easily. A downgrade south of New Meadows and north of Cambridge/Council, slow and steady. Open range in that area so be alert.

RE: Campgrounds on US16 in Big Horn Mtns.

We have driven up there and towed, but not camped. We pulled in to one to check it out, but would have to look it up. Have you checked Campendium for reviews? This is a super site with often photos and personal reviews. It's worth a check. Note - just checked Campendium - all three are up there. The only one without photos, but with a review, is Boulder Park.

RE: Looking for old RV fridge repair in Boise, ID

When we lived in Boise we used Boise RV repair in Garden Valley. They repaired my fridge and serviced my Water Heater in 1995 trailer plus did all my annual maintenance. Good guys. Jesseannie You probably meant Garden City.

RE: Insurance Denying Claims

Eric&Lisa, your idea sucks, really sucks. You want to challenge every new poster as to their bona fides? I have been posting for 15 years, and with out a doubt this forum is filthy with armchair experts, weight police, RV DOT,rule makers, rule breakers, petty tyrants, and know it alls. Ten years ago,you could not keep up with the daily posts, now? Some threads go several days with out an exchange. Do we see the same questions over and over? Of course, none of us was born with an RV coming out of our butt. There is a learning curve, and we all learn at a different pace. Spend a day glancing thru responses and ask yourself, Why would a newby subject himself to "google is your friend" ,"one post and gone" "troll question" and even worse. The forum employs moderators to do just that. If you are a frustrated moderater wannabee, please start your own forum where you can be God! Well said!!!
