RE: CA 178 from Bakersfield to Lake Isabella

Once you enter the canyon, the first few miles are windy and kinda tight. Then at about the 12 mile mark, the road switches sides of the river and it opens up into a new easy road all the way to the town of Isabella.

RE: Autopay anyway!

While somewhat on-topic, some advice I got from a CPA years ago was this: 2 cards - one for everyday purchases (gas, restaurant, groceries, etc), and a debit card from AN ENTIRELY DIFFERENT BANK, loaded with only a small amount, for online purchases. That way if the online card number gets hacked, or compromised somehow, the bad guys don't have access to your "main" accounts.

RE: Harbor Freight - what happened to the 20% off coupons

And how many cordless tool ads are labeled "Tool Only" meaning you have to buy a battery separately? Example: 20v Hypermax™ Lithium-Ion Cordless 1/2 In. Drill/Driver - Tool Only $44.99. So you have to buy a battery - Cheapest is: 20v HyperMax™ Lithium-Ion 1.5 Ah Compact Battery for $22.99. Of course the battery is useless without a charger, cheapest is: 20v Hypermax™ Lithium-Ion Rapid Charger again, for $22.99. Now your up to $90.

RE: Using RV generator as backup for house?

We usually lose power a couple of times a year (winter, wind, fires, ect.). Our 5500 watt portable provides plenty of power, if used judicially. An extension cord run into the house to a power strip for the TV (on cable, interestingly, cable never goes out when the power does - underground), run the refrigerator about every 4 hours, the chest freezer is good for at least 12, laptops can run with the TV. A wood stove heats at least the living room, and eventually the whole house. HWH and furnace are both 240, neither work on gen power.

RE: Apocalypse almost

DW did a system update to her Android Trac-Fone the other day, when she was out of town of course, and had the same problem. Finally took it to Walmart (where we bought them) and the tech there did the same thing - pulled the simcard, put it back in, and VIOLA!

RE: No hot water during a freeze

Hot water will freeze before cold water.
Old trick question - water that has been boiled, and allowed to cool will freeze quicker than cold water.

RE: How many have had Thanksgiving in a truck camper?

Had it quite a few times in the desert, in a 21' toyhauler, with 8 people and several dogs. Granted, the bird wasn't cooked inside (deep fried), but everything else was.

RE: Garmin GPS

After using one for over 20 years (see user name) in Search and Rescue, a GPS is just another "tool" in your navigation toolbox. You need to have a GENERIC understanding of WHERE you're going, and the GENERIC route to get there. If it doesn't make sense to take a certain road, then STOP and figure out why you're being directed down that route. One thing to keep in mind, Garmin and the other mapping software companies DO NOT UPDATE their maps. I've got a locked gate a block from my house that's been there 5+ years. I've tried calling, e-mail, writing, no luck in changing the software.

RE: Spell check

I used to work for a USN command known as Naval Sea Systems Command, or NAVSEA for short (everything the military has an acronym!). Wordperfect came out in the mid-80's, and the suggested autocorrect for NAVSEA was NAUSEA. It seemed appropriate at the time! :D

RE: Onan 4K - Code 36 - Low Fuel or What?

Hello--
....Do TH gennys have the protective shut off of fuel when tank reaches 1/4 full... as do motorhomes? How would I know where/if this shut off valve exists on my TH?
....
All that is, is the bottom of the generator fuel pickup is physically higher in the tank than the MH engine fuel pickup. I agree with either the fuel filter (there's one on the carb of my generator, and another inline by the wheels...)
OR
the rubber fuel line may have cracks in it, allowing air to enter the system.
Take a small (1 gallon) can of fuel, and run a short fuel line from it to the carb (after disconnecting the existing line). Try and start the generator. If it runs, you've ruled out problems with the carb. Now it's a matter of isolating the problem(s).

RE: Problems unique to Toy Haulers

Fresh water: get a model that has a fresh water dump valve. Or install one. Otherwise, you have to empty thru the sink, into a gray tank, then out the pooper pipe.
Gas tank / station: Ensure your gas station / generator fuel pickup is near the bottom of the tank. Otherwise, one or the other will run out.

Disconnect battery. Then using the supplied manual handle, raise (or lower) to clear the down (or up) limit switch. Then try electrically again.
