RE: RV cover vs shed?

I would have to go with a shed. We used a cover until on a nice cold winter forced some vermin to make their home under the cover. They feasted on my rubber roof, air conditioner, vents, awning and the cover itself. Since that happened, we have had a shed at our last two homes and really like them. No new vermin problems. The damage to the rig cost almost as much as the shed and pad. If you have enough room, I would get a shed that is at least 5' longer then your rig and wide enough to open any slides. Also, adding gable panels to the back end and at least one row of side panels to keep the sun/weather off really makes a difference. Just make sure to check the clearance height and width with the sales person to make sure your rig fits with roof slopes on the shed. Regarding getting stuck in the yard, yes have been there too. I would suggest purchasing a roll of geotech fabric, in whatever width and length you need and placing gravel, millings, etc. on top of the fabric, maybe 3" or 4" thick. The gravel will not sink into the soil with the fabric under it. The gravel pad should also extend under the shed, so the shed installers have a good solid surface to install the bottom rails.

Charge Solenoid Location on 2021 E-450

We just purchased our most recent Class C, an Entegra Odyssey 24B. Got it home and realized that we had a single Group 24 battery in the stair well. However, a second Group 24 will not fit in the tray due to all of the other electrical hardware in the well. I usually run with at least two Group 27 deep cycle batteries in the tray, but that’s not possible without major structural changes. We don’t boondock a lot, but may go out for three or four nights a couple of times a year, so we need some reserve capacity. I found a large area inside the coach that will allow me to install at least 2 and possibly up to 4 or 5 100- AH lithium batteries. Our converter is Li ready so I don’t have to change that out. I also don’t intend to install an inverter at this time to run AC appliances, just need the DC power for the furnace, frig, pump, interior lights, etc. Spoke to sales/tech person at Li battery dealer they said that in addition to the batteries, I need a battery isolation manager to replace my charge solenoid from the alternator. I cannot locate the charge solenoid. I found the Battery Disconnect Solenoid, the Auxiliary Start Solenoid and a solenoid on the generator. It’s on a Ford E450 Chassis. I looked under the coolant reservoir and main chassis control center relay block. I can’t see under the chassis battery, but I stuck my arm down there and took some photos and didn’t see anything. I am looking at the wiring schematics from Jayco and don’t see anything that refers to a charge solenoid. Some people I have ask have said that it’s installed by Ford, others say that it is installed by the coach manufacturer and others say that it’s the auxiliary start solenoid that is used for both charge and start. Any suggestions where to look?

Good solar article. As many do now our class c came pre-wired for solar. Aside from a plug on the roof, I’m not sure what else I would need to complete a solar install.

Not meaning to change the subject, but I see that agesilaus and Lwiddis both have solar systems. How did you determine the panel wattage you needed? Did you go with permanent roof mounts or portable panels? Lwiddis, how many of the Trojan T-125 6-volts do you carry? In a Class C I am somewhat limited for storage. I can carry 2 -12 volt 29's or 31's under the stairs and possibly another one on the rear bumper. We used to to that with a previous Class C when we did more dry camping. What kind or charge rate do you all get with your systems? Can you get a full charge on a good sunny day?

agesilaus, good to hear about RVTW. I downloaded the demo and it looked detailed, thousands of campgrounds, both public and private. Like the links to their websites (as long as they keep the links up to date). The Demo did not appear to allow me to use the POI feature. Messaged support to see if the POI is supposed to work in demo mode. Ranger Smith, what model Garmin did you go with? A Gator in Noles county..Go Gators! Still love the Gazetteers, have a good collection of the states with the routes of past trips highlighted as well. We're not chain only people, love to find the local businesses to shop, eat and stay, that's what we remember the most.

Mapping and GPS Recommendations Needed

We are considering purchasing a GPS unit when we restart taking long trips. I love the old state Gazetteer map books, but I also like being able to see where the next gas station is located, as well as the next campground. Cell phones and Google maps are OK, but when you are in of those little black areas on the cell coverage maps, it may as well be a black hole. I see that there are now a bunch of GPS units marketed for RV use, but were probably designed for truckers. Garmin seems to lead the pack with the shear number of units that they make. I would like something that has an address book and shows locations of gas stations, stores, campgrounds and other amenities, as well as road hazards, weight restrictions and low bridge warnings. I recall a PC based program about 15 years ago called Streets and Trips or something like that. You could pick your route and a corridor along that route showing any roadside amenity you had turned on. However, you couldn’t take it with you. I was hoping to find a GPS unit that had similar features that didn’t need a PC, WIFI or cell signal to work. Since we have a larger rig now, weight restrictions, road construction and low clearance bridges could be a problem. We like back roads which may have additional clearance, weight or width restrictions. I found the RV Trip Wizard which looks a lot like the Streets and Trips program mentioned above. It will run on a tablet or phone, but I believe that it would require wifi or cellular service. Anyone use this subscription service? It seems to show many POI’s, including campgrounds, food and current fuel prices. Any thoughts or recommendations are appreciated for the travel map toolbox.

Refrigerator has the same problem as the water heater. Flame backs up into burner tube. I have video of both, but don't think I can post video. The range burners appear normal and don't seem to fluctuate when water heater or refrigerator burners start. Also had a problem with the furnace at delivery, bad internal vibration. Turned out to be a problem with the metal case. The propane supply associated with the furnace appeared to work fine.

Sorry, I was having the same problem with the refrigerator. Pilot light fires up right away, but in a few minutes starts to sputter and flame gets sucked back into the burner tube, just like the water heater.

Burner Tube Air Adjustments on new Dometic Appliances?

Just picked up our new Odyssey 24B from the dealer last weekend. Took it out the one of our favorite campgrounds on the way home. Did a pretty through walkthrough before we took delivery. Made sure water heater and refrigerator started in gas and electric, etc. Got to the CG and started water heater. After a few minutes it stated popping, flame backing up down the burner tube and large yellow flame. To much air, ok throttle down the adjustment sleeve to reduce air in the mixture. But wait, no adjustment sleeve. Checked the owner’s manual, nothing regarding any air mix control for the flame. Model is Dometic WH-6GEA. Already had some soot build up above the vent on the door. Are the any adjustments to control the air gas mixture I am missing? Just noticed also no air adjustments on the refrigerator burner tube as well.

My Viair arrived the other day, they are big and heavy. I tried it out and was impressed. Since we have a short Class C, I was able to fill all of the tires using only one of the hoses supplied. I connected the compressor to one of the coach batteries, since the chassis battery in under the floorboard. It took about 3 minutes each tire to fill an additional 10 pounds. The compressor does get hot, as they all do, so I left it cool down before I packed it up again. I like the screw on hose end inflator. You don't have to hold the inflator on the tire and also squeeze the handle on the air gun at the same time. I had minimal air loss when I unscrewed the inflator hose, but my valve stems are pretty well positioned and accessible. I have had other rigs where the valve stems were shorter or poorly angled which could cause some problems due to the size of the screw-on inflator. A longer or better angled extension would help here.

I ordered a 400P RVS today. Had a bit of a problem finding one in stock. Tried Amazon, but some I of the options were a little misleading. Models matched, put the part numbers didn’t match up. Be careful.

I had see the Viair brand but had not been able to find any real reviews. I had not seen the Tirewell brand. I will dig further into each recommendation. We have a Class C and have a generator, so 120V AC was an option. I had also considered.a pancake compressor, but lack storage for it.

12 Volt/120 Volt Portable Air Compressor

For years, I have carried one of the those cheap and small Kobalt 12 Volt/120 Volt air compressors. Lately, it has been overheating the thermal protection switch trips so I have to wait for it to cool down between uses. Can anyone recommend a good quality compact air compressor that can air up 80 PSI tires? I would like a dual supply power like the Kobalt has and a compact size like the Kobalt. I do have the generator to supply 120 volts if needed, but I like being able to use the battery in some situations. May be a 120 to 150 PSI max range? Thanks!

I have looked for fuses and can not find any that are designated for the step. What size fuse am I looking for? It should be a chassis fuse and not a coach fuse correct? It's on a Mercedes Sprinter chassis. Looked at fuse panel on chassis, there are about 30 fuses, no index on cover. Since this was equipment installed at Thor conversion factory, I doubt the Mercedes manual for label the step operator. Battery under floor and have not opened it up yet. Grounds are both good and clean, no rust or corrosion. Cleaned both ground terminals.

Odd Electric Step Problem

Our step has been working fine for a couple of years. Today, I was giving the RV a bath and went to back it into the carport and I heard the steps go out. I turned the RV off and the steps go in. Even with the step over ride switch off, the steps extend when the you turn the ignition key to the start position. With the ignition off and the step switch on the steps work fine. Extend when the door opens, retract when the door closes. Turn the step switch off while extended, they stay extended. Any thoughts? It doesn't appear to be the motor. Maybe the controller module? Ignition interlock?

Got some numbers from the manufacturer, through a line employee. Out the factory door weight is averaging a little over 2950# of CCC. Adding fuel, water, propane, spare tire and full tanks (1490#), we would have 1460# for us and our stuff (~930#). We travel fairly lite and never with full holding tanks, we should still have additional excess capacity. Pulled the trigger yesterday on the Odyssey 24B. Should be delivered by late October to early November.
