RE: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

So glad this thread is still going and see a few posting. We went to Shawnee, OK and took 2 horses to sell the end of May. We went to the same sale last year, prices and people purchasing has sure changed in a year. The gas prices have finally hit the horse market. We sold ours pretty good but the gas bill didn't help. My husband wanted a new horse and as a friend told me. "If you haven't found your forever horse at our age, you better start looking". He did finally find something he likes, not exactly what he wanted but I'm hoping he's happy. It's been too hot to trail ride and we don't have any trips planned till fall. Martyn if you need a stopping place on the way North, drop me a message may be able to help you out. I have a house & barn next door, sitting empty because I don't want any renters. No RV hook up but peaceful and quiet. ETA: Scottiemom I sure hope you feel better. My husband came home sick yesterday, I gave him an at home test and he tested positive. We have both been vaxed. I guess it's a good thing I have 2 houses & barns, I will be hiding from him the next few days. It will not be a fun 4th around here.

RE: Dude ranch RV parks?

We usually take our horses with us when we can. Most parks & places we go don't rent horses. This is not a Dude Ranch but you can camp and rent horses. in Alabama. We did drive the motor home to Bryce Canyon and rent horses. I highly recommend Ruby's Campground (I believe they rent horses) but we used None of these are Dude Ranch Experiences but great places to ride. Also whoever said horses are expensive, very true. Much cheaper to trail ride and camp than show. When fussing about the price always remember. Good horses aren't cheap and cheap horses aren't good. Takes a good horse for some of these trails. I will be following this thread, and we will take our own horses. Thank you.

RE: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

I sure miss this thread, I used to read it every morning when I was working. I also hate the cold. Be thankful you all don't have 6 horses and 5 dogs to take care of in the cold. I really understand why older people move to FL & AZ. Even my northern cold loving husband is starting to hate it as he get older. We do have a reservation to head to N FL in February with 2 of the horses & 2 dogs for a couple of weeks. Sure hope all goes well and we get to make the trip. I hope everyone has a safe and Happy New Year.

RE: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

Such a sad time to check in and read. Dale so sorry to hear of your Mom's passing, wishing you safe travels. So very sorry to hear about Richard. I sure miss his daily posts and beautiful writing, seems like such a kind man. I survived trail riding in Bryce Canyon and the ride there & back, I still hate heights. Getting ready to go to TN and ride our own horses. I have a new one, I sure hope he does good, he's a little spooky. Safe travels to all. ETA: Prayers for Richard & Sue. I can't believe I left that off.

RE: Best UTV for trails

I have a Kawasaki Teryx it's a 2 seater with a dump bed. I really like it for trails and using around the farm. I have owned it since 2014, it's been a great little machine. My husband had a CanAm 1000, I hated it, (couldn't see out and scary fast) he sold it. My son has a CanAm 1000 4 seater he likes it, his wife hates it. I would think a Teryx would be easier to haul, not as wide as other models. IMO the CanAm's feel like they might rear up, and I ride horses so I know that feeling.

RE: How many states has your dog been too?

This really made me have to think. I have a toy aussie who is only 8 months old and she has been to 7 states, going to 8th next week. Also have a chihuahua 6 who has been to at least 17. They love to go. I know there is no real toy Australian shepherd breed but I did have DNA run. She is 50% miniature American Shepherd and 25% Yorkshire terrier & 25% Chihuahua. She is a doll and I also have her extra large twin which is part great Pyrenees & Rottweiler. She has to stay home and guard the farm she did go to 7 states as a puppy.

RE: Glenwood Canyon I-70 mudslides....!

Thank you so much Allworth for the information. This may be a trip that just scares me to death coming and going. We have horseback rides booked in Bryce Canyon, I'm pretty sure by the videos it's not flat. Thankfully we are not taking horses but I get to worry about them at home while trying to enjoy vacation. Also going with a group may help, another couple in a MH and 2 flying. I'm sure there will be some interesting stories to tell after this. I wouldn't want to get on a plane anytime soon. However this seems like a really long trip even before the mudslide and road closure. Please any info and updates on the road is sure welcome.

RE: Glenwood Canyon I-70 mudslides....!

Thank you for posting but the link didn't work for me. We have a trip planned to Bryce Canyon Labor Day coming from Indiana. I don't know which way scares me most driving I-70 if they open it or Hwy 50 as the alternate route. Can anyone enlighten me on how 50 is with a motor home? Or if and when 70 opens and how it is, I'm a little afraid of heights.

RE: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

I check for this thread every morning over my coffee. I sure miss Richard's beautiful writing and always reminding me to tell someone I love them and pet my dog. We have a trip planned Labor Day weekend headed to Bryce Canyon. I almost wish our campground would cancel our reservations, or the people we are going with would want to stay home. I was already concerned about the drive out there (I hate heights) before they closed hwy 70. Does anyone know how hwy 50 is? I can only imagine between the mountains and traffic, I don't know which scares me more. Any information appreciated.

RE: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

SGTJOE you sound like a great guy to have in the neighborhood. Can I ask since you are in Utah, have you ever heard of Ruby's Campground in Bryce Canyon? Is it a nice place? Funny story about how and why we picked it. I mentioned we have horses and we do travel and trail ride. In thinking of a bucket list thing to do this year around the campfire. My husband decides we need to go to Bryce Canyon, we are not taking our own horses, renting them. However we needed to pick a campground and we picked Ruby's. The whole reason we picked it is because for our 40th wedding anniversary my husband got me a puppy. Part Rottweiler & part Great Pyrenes and we named her Ruby. I wouldn't be concerned but some friends decided to join us we have 4 flying into Vegas and renting a car and 4 of us are driving motor homes from Indiana. Please tell me if you can we picked a good place? Since we totally picked it because of the name only and the dog. She doesn't even get to go, but 2 little dogs will.

RE: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

I am so sorry to hear Richard is having so many issues. Prayers for him. I have read this thread since I worked and cried at my desk over Old Fella, people thought I was nuts. I have been retired since 08. Metal Gator sorry the vet bills are so high, but since I switched vets I have a better understanding as to why. I have horses and dogs I was taking my dogs to a new vet just out of school and every visit for puppy shots was $150.+. Now I know vet school is expensive. I have since switched to a older vet who built a nice clinic yet is about ready to retire. He has a bunch of older vets who work 1 or 2 days a week. When discussing vet stuff one of the older vets told me, when he started his practice 85% of his business was large animals. When he retired (or sold his business) it was 7% large animals. He says factory farming has pushed all the small farmers out and his business. Now I don't know that for sure but that was his story. I know my horse vet and dog vet used to be the same person, but not any more. I truly hated calling the (just out of vet school vet) for any kind of info. They wouldn't tell you anything without a visit. The older vets office, will give you a few ideas to try before you bring them in, unless it's a emergency. Now I understand that wouldn't work work all pet owners, however I have raised horses and dogs for over 50 years. I don't raise either any more just try to keep the old ones alive and healthy. I also have an issue with the young vet insisting my over 12 year old chihuahua getting shots every year. I didn't realize until it was too late but I will never give a small house dog anything but rabies after 10 years old. I have had 2 semi retired vets agree with me. I'm not anti vax by any means just had a really bad experience with an older little dog with yearly shots. You all have a great day, I hate to see the thread not used. It has done so much good over the years.
