RE: Diesel Pusher losing power

Thought I would come back with an update. So we were able to find a mechanic to check out the motorhome. Recommended changing the air filter (again). Explained that we had just done that two weeks earlier but followed his advice and changed it again. Seemed to correct the problem but really seems odd it could need to be changed so soon.
Has been an interesting 5 weeks on the road. Had one slide stop working altogether so now have to override it by using power directly from the battery. Had a pin break on another slide but was able to repair it. Replaced the onboard surge protector with a external one.
Still it has been a great trip, but expensive trip. We have done fine towing the Jeep on the interstate and relatively level ground but the motor home really struggled in higher elevations which was not what I expected with a DP. Often we did well to hold 25 mph when climbing hills out west.
Have several things to get checked out when we get home on Saturday as we continue the motorhome journey.

RE: Diesel Pusher losing power

Thanks for the quick feedback. Attempting to connect with a diesel mechanic in Cody today.
Recently had air filter and fuel filter changed. Not sure if unit has two filters but will find out.
Unit is not blowing black smoke even when we are crawling from a speed standpoint.
Will provide update once we can figure out the issue.

Diesel Pusher losing power

Just curious as to other have had similar experience.
Have a 2006 Tiffin Phaeton, currently on a road trip in WY and motorhome seems to loose power on even small inclines. Had the air filter changed in Odessa Mo. which seemed to correct the problem for a while. Currently we go from the ability to travel at highway speeds to literally having to climb the entrance to the rv park we are staying at for a couple of days at 5 mph because the unit wouldn't go any faster.
Am trying to find a diesel shop in Cody, WY to check the coach out but just wondered if other members have experienced anything similar.
Appreciate any feedback.

RE: Ongoing Motorhome search

Update - so made the plunge. Traded the travel trailer for a 2006 Tiffin Phaeton. 40 ft 4 slides, appears to have been well taken care of. Obviously a little dated on the inside but I think we can do minor changes that will make it look a little more modern . Just getting started so look out for the question from a motor home newbie.

RE: Motorhome tires - recommendations.

Michelins are my go to tire and what I run on my truck, jeep and car. I have asked for the price on the Michelins but expect it to hurt my wallet.

RE: Motorhome tires - recommendations.

Thanks for the quick feedback. Toyos are what the dealer also recommended but appreciate the feedback from some real world users.

Motorhome tires - recommendations.

Looks like we are going to pull the trigger on a motorhome, a 2006 Tiffan Phaeton. The tires on the unit have plenty of tread but are 2015 dates so I'm thinking we would be better off to replace them. Just seeking some experience from folks on the forum regarding tire manufacturer recommendations.
Size needed is 295/75/R22.5

RE: Ongoing Motorhome search

Rick, thanks for your feedback. Found a couple of options, a 2013 Fleetwood with a great floor plan, 13,000 miles. Has the mid bathroom but all on one side with three entry points which is kind of nice. It’s over our price range at $134,000 so thinking that through.
Also found a 2006 Tiffin Phaeton which appears to be in great shape. 88,000 miles asking $85,000.
Never imagined this was going to be so difficult.

RE: Ongoing Motorhome search

Rick, you are correct. Our budget is $100,000. Based on my research so far and a lot of feedback from others, if we move to a Motorhome I do plan to go with diesel. I currently tow with a F350 diesel so pretty convinced at this point I wouldn’t be satisfied with a gas Motorhome. Additionally most of the feedback I’ve gotten indicates the heavier unit will provide a much better driving experience.
Realize all of this is subjective but seems to make sense for us. That means looking at somewhat older models and finding one in good shape at a price we can afford is proving to be challenging but we’re not necessarily in a hurry.
My comments on the Foretravels came after following a link in one of the previous replies to my post. A dealer in TX had a few of those and yes they do look very nice but not in our price range.
Have found a 2013 Fleetwood that is great on the inside. Has a little damage on the outside body but the price they are asking reflects that. The damage is cosmetic and wouldn’t necessarily have to be fixed. Being a 2013, it does require the use of DEF so that’s another item that has to be consider. Interestingly enough I have a diesel truck and Jeep that both use DEF and so far no issues but time will tell.
Again, appreciate your feedback. The search continues.

Ongoing Motorhome search

Had a couple of previous post on our journey to find a used Motorhome and we’re making progress. Would be interested in any feedback from this group on Fleetwood quality in the 2007 - 2015 range. Have found a couple that look promising, hopefully checking them out tomorrow.

RE: MH used newer or older

All - thanks for the feedback it is really appreciated. This research project is turning out to be much more difficult than I thought. At this point I’m pretty much sold on the diesel option. We currently have a 49ft TT that we tow with a F350 Dually diesel and it tows perfectly so I’m a big diesel fan.
I’ve found a few options in the 2005 to 2008 range that look good online. Hopefully will start checking so out in person this weekend. Worst case scenario is that we keep what we have. It will still be good.

RE: Potential purchase of MH

So final update. Offered to fly out to inspect the unit and complete the transaction there. Seller responded that would not work as she is not where the unit is being stored. I stated she would also not be in NC when the unit arrived for me to inspect it. No response.
Glad I asked a lot questions. Thanks for the input from all.

RE: MH used newer or older

Craig7h
Thanks for the feedback. It’s the exact type of information/thoughts I was looking for and of course I understand I’m asking for opinions so I’ll ask for an additional one. Is there an age, regardless of how clean the unit looks that this group would say to stay away from? For example looked at a 2000 Monaco which is very clean with 20,000 miles on it but the idea of 23 year old vehicle concerns me regardless of how it looks.
And previous poster is current on budget. It’s $100,000, not $100. Again opinions are appreciated and I will take as just that.

RE: Potential purchase of MH

Willaild, the representative from the trucking company did indicate the had the unit on their property and indicated they had inspected it for obvious damage and that there was none. They of course indicated this was “normal” business for them but I just could not get over the fact of basically buying something sight unseen even with the “confirmed” right to return it within 5 days.
One additional update. I have offered to fly out, inspect the unit during the 5 day right of refusal and then drive it back to NC myself if it all checks out. Will be interesting to see if I get a response.

MH used newer or older

Posted earlier about a potential MH purchase and got valuable feedback so I would like feedback from experienced MH owners. We have a budget of $100, for this purchase. I can 2016 - 2017 gas models, Thor, Coachmen, etc 35ft that would meet our needs. I can also find older, DP 2000 - 2008, low mileage for about the same price, Monaco for example.
Just curious as to thoughts about these types of options. Obviously a lot depends on how the unit has been cared for but assuming any purchase would be inspected for trouble areas I would appreciate thoughts on which you might think would be the better option.

RE: Potential purchase of MH

Thanks for all the feedback. To give you the outcome, I followed up on the company and they actually do exist. They are registered with the Oregon Secretary of State. Called and talked with someone at the company ( as far as I know). Also verified with my attorney contact that this a legitimate way to transact business, but as he said for every honest deal there are 99 scams.
Ultimately I offered to use an irrevocable letter of credit through my bank which guaranteed the bank would obligated to pay if the terms of the agreement were met. When the seller declined that offer we walked away.
Again, appreciate the feedback.
