RE: Clusters of dog diabetes in households-Dr. Doug et al

Most commercial foods have a lot of processed grains in them (corn, wheat, rice). These are all starchy foods made up of lots of glucose molecules. This causes constant elevated sugar (and eventually, diabetes). Most people don't understand that a natural diet is the best. Limit carb intake but DO NOT ELIMINATE carbs. A little carbs is needed. For a person, I would say, limit potatoes, rice, corn, and bread. Eat lots of fresh green vegetables and meats.

RE: Need help with Jesse-behavior

I was diagnosed diabetic in January. What are you feeding? I would concentrate on a natural meat based food with limited grains of any kind. Add more vegetables. Corn, rice, or wheat products are going to raise blood sugar. Also, try to limit late night eating; however, don't make the dogs go longer than 12 hours without eating. An early morning egg for each might be a good option to help stabalize early morning glucose levels. Think low carb, high protein. AVOID "no carb" diets.

RE: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

We had an American Eskimo, Ginger, who developed seizures at 7 or 8. They started when we took her to the groomer. She would get so excited. Initially, it seemed like a lone occurrence, then started every time she would go. They started getting worse and she was determined to have epilepsy. The last couple months, she had worsening grand maul seizures and more frequent seizures.

Toolguy, my husband had lung cancer in 2012. They did chemo and radiation to the chest then. A couple months later, radiation to the brain, as the first places it spreads is usually brain and liver. He is cancer free 7+ years later. Feel free to contact me if you want any more information.

It is currently raining on the western side of Ohio, then back to the heat wave. We got to take the truck camper out for the first time last weekend and going back this weekend. Bought a 2007 Lance last year.

RE: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

I have worked really hard. My goal has always been to get off the insulin. I have had bad reactions to the Basaglar and Levimir so really want to not have to take them. I was also taking Novolog every time I ate. I have a basic rule - non starchy veggies make up at least half the plate. Meat makes up part of the meal. I try to avoid breaded fried foods. I have found that I can fry eggs in coconut oil and add spinach, onions, cheese, and tomstoes to make an omelet that actually reduces my blood sugar. I fry foods in coconut oil, real butter, or pure olive oil. I have really only eliminated sugar and flour, so no cake or pies. I eat alot of fresh berries as desserts.

RE: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

I have some good news. After being dianosed as a Type 2 diabetic and spending a week in the hospital in January (initial blood sugar over 1000), I am now off all insulin and controlling my sugar with diet. I went on the Freestyle Libre in March and find that a wonderful tool to use to help figure out what helps and what foods are trouble. I am now staying in range (under 130) the majority of time. I am using a combination of Keto, paleo, and just healthy eating. Sugar substitutes are a big no-no other than stevia or monk fruit. I find that almost every drink or yogurt has sucrolose(Splenda) in it, and it causes my blood sugar to skyrocket. It also makes me really tired. The endocrinologist told me yesterday that I had the best numbers they have seen in the last few months (95% in normal range for last week with no insulin) and no blood sugar over 200. I cook with coconut oil and lots of spices. I like cheese, veggies, and lots of berries. As side effect has been a 15% weight loss that effortlessly fell off and my energy is increasing. My own body is starting to respond to food and my goal is to put my diabetes in remission as I continue to lose weight. Initially, my doctor told me this was not possible, but after seeing my numbers, he has changed his mind. I can still eat most normal foods, just not white bread, white potatoes , or watermelon. The sensor has been a god send.

RE: Traveling with a Fish

I had a goldfish when in college. Moved him multiple times. Put him and water in an old miracle whip jar with holes in lid and set that in fishbowl. When got to location, poured all in bowl and added fresh dechlorinated room temp water to fill. He lived the whole time I was in college and a couple years beyond.

RE: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

A 24 hour vomiting bug the weekend before threw my whole body out of whack. Knew there was a grandmother but no idea I was diabetic.

RE: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

I have been reading this for years. Have not been on the last 5 days because I ended up in the hospital Friday night. I walked into the ER with a blood glucose over 1000 and collapsed when they started the insulin drip. I was on the mend when a blood infection caused me to sink again. Finally have some energy and looks like I may go home tomorrow. Someone let it slip that another 12 hours and it would have been a different outcome (black bag).
