RE: Need help with route for noobs - SoCal to NorCal

Pretty much all the roads you'll encounter are used by 18 wheelers. If the road is paved you shouldn't have any issues.

RE: Too old to drive ?

Our drivers at work are all CDL rated yet, as they age, it becomes readily apparent that they're losing their edge. Many don't realize there's a problem until they scratch and dent some very expensive paint. It's a sad thing to watch.

RE: Buying RV from a far away dealer

I was once told by a Harley dealer rep that if I didn't buy my bike from them they wouldn't service it. Same could happen in the RV world, I suppose.

RE: Potentially dangerous mistake in March RV Magazine

It's ironic that I always chock my trailer before un-hitching yet none of the trailers at my dealership are ever chocked and none have rolled away (and our yard is not level) even in the severe summer storms. When I'm parking trailers for our RV show at the fairgrounds sometimes the tongue will swing a few inches but that's because the axles are under tension otherwise they stay chockless where I park them.

RE: camping outlook 2021

We've had good luck getting spots at our AZ State Parks mostly due to the lack of Canadians and to a change in policy allowing 14 days max.

RE: New Ford 150s Save the Day in Texas

Precisely why I keep my toyhauler gassed up and ready for an emergency such as that. We'd just move into the RV. Good on Ford for the onboard inverter/gen.
BTW, TX was warned ten years ago that the state was inadequately prepared for a storm such as they just experienced and they failed to act on it.

I've got 3 axles and have never lost a wheel stud. Perhaps people are using too much torque.

RE: GPS / CB Choices

We didn't pay anywhere near $2k for our rugged radios & intercom in our CanAm. My wife and I talk comfortably all day on our rides, and our group calls out all the turns and stops even when our group stretches for miles. It's definitely a necessity for large group rides.Well, $1700 for the complete in-dash radio and intercom with headphones + installation comes pretty close.

RE: Apache Junction, AZ to El Paso, TX

Hope your good with mountain roads. Lots of twisties and climbs on the 60 from Superior up into Globe. It's a pretty drive, though. Oh, and the cool tunnel you go through (don't get too close to the sides, stay in the left lane). We've used this road on our way to Roosevelt Lake for four decades.

RE: Roamly RV Insurance

A long time friend has been my Farmers agent for close to 20 years. I didn't realize how much I had been paying his company until I got quotes from USAA, Progressive and Geico. Wow, they're all less than half of what I'm currently paying. Shop around. Read the reviews. Paying more doesn't mean better service.

RE: Apache Junction, AZ to El Paso, TX

Living in Tucson for 49 years and travelling the state regularly, I'd choose from AJ take 60 east to 79 south to Florence, then 287 west to Coolidge (in Florence turn right at Florence Heights to get to the 287 easier), and 287 south to I-10. This route you'll avoid city street driving in Phoenix and Tucson.
I remember when my wife wanted to do Tucson to tamp in 4 days. That's four 500 mile days. We did it but with her helping with the driving.

RE: GPS / CB Choices

The off-road folks I ride with operate mostly in the VHF radio range. Some operate in the UHF in the 462 Mhz range or FRS. There are about 20 or so VHF channels apparently approved for our use and they're in the 151 - 157 Mhz range. There are charts showing which freq's are used in various parts of the country to avoid stepping on other users.
Many of the RZRs and CanAms have some elaborate radio/intercom systems costing a few grand. No one I know has a radio license and I don't see why these radios wouldn't be used by truckers as they've got decent range, excellent clarity, and they're danged cheap to purchase. My radio cost me $35 on Amazon and is the size of a pack of cigarettes.
I read truckers use channel 7 but not sure the freq.
